I'm working on a friend's computer that's infested with viruses. Today I went to turn it on to check it out, and Windows boots, then it sits at the logon screen for about a minute before blue screening and displaying machine_check_exception.
When the machine rebooted, it would just keep going black after POST and rebooting, not even displaying a Windows failed to start screen.
I had to unplug the secondary hard drive for it to even give me the boot menu. When it did, and I told Windows to start normally, it then blue screened and said UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. I ran a chkdsk on it on another computer and hooked it up again. Now, it says Windows failed to start because ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.
The thing is, the file IS there in System32. I even copied out ntoskrnl.exe from the dllcache (protected Windows system files). boot.ini looks normal...at least it says disk(0) and partition(1), and it doesn't look like there's any other partitions on it.
Oh yeah, and if I try to boot from the CD into the recovery console, as soon as I press ENTER to log into the console on the specified installation of Windows, the computer immediately reboots.
