What needs commemorating?

I have an Art History assignment where I have to design a monument that will be "an effective commemoration in our modern world". Anybody have any ideas? I'd like to steer this away from vidja game or pop culture references if possible. And no suggesting the Obama memorial... Your creativity is appreciated, internet.
