So yeah, the EVE server is currently down for the Quantum Rise expansion and will be back up within a day.

I've gotten a nifty thing that boils down to a referral reward system. I invite people to play EVE, they get a 21 day trial (regular trial is 14 days), and if they subscribe for any amount of time, I get a free month of game play.

So, if you guys have ever been interested in EVE list your email address here or PM me. I'll send the mail to you and you can register a trial. If you like it, sign up for a subscription. If you dont like it, you could always sign up for a subscription anyways :p. For anyone who goes through my referral program and subscribes, I'll send them 25 million ISK. To let you guys new to eve get an idea of what that is, people just getting through their trial typically earn 1 to 2 million ISK.

We've had Eve threads here ever since h2v.net was born, but I'll start over again. Here's a video that basically sums up a lot about EVE:

I have to admit, it looks fucking incredible and I've been after a good space game for a while; it doesn't seem like my sort of thing though. I mean, I'm all for patience (I'll happily set up in one spot and wait hours for the perfect kill in some games), but by all accounts EVE takes a bloody long time to do anything, not just because of the fact it's in space but because there are all these RPG elements and other crap which you have to wait hours for (friends who play it routinely play something else for a few hours while doing so). That and the fact it's subscription-based are the things that drive me off. What I want is the sort of game where I'm given complete control of my own capital ship and command of a fleet, and I can go about my merry business wrecking shit and not having to worry about any micro-managing or waiting beyond my own ship's systems. Looking at the menus in some of those screens hurts my brain.

An MMORTS in space is what I want, preferably Halo-based. Words cannot describe how fucking badly I want my own CCS and fleet to commit mass xenocide and destroy planets with.

Ross, you'd love EVE, then. The vast majority of those pics in there were taken after waiting about a month for an enemy to make a mistake and draw themselves out into the open. Greatest thing about that though is you can do other things while waiting. Drop me your email and I'll get you the 21 day trial thing. Once you get used to it, it just comes natural. Even if you dont know how to do something, you're likely to learn how just by right clicking in a few places.

CCP's spent the past year and a half working on that. They've taken incredible leaps to create a better experience for new users. Back around my time of starting the game they gave you a basic tutorial, a couple of missions for you to get the hang of everything, then flung you out into the EVE universe. Now, I think they've added about a hundred missions to keep new players busy if they want to.

But yes, if you go about it without any help, the learning curve looks like this:

Corporations are just EVE calls guilds or whatever the hell they are in Wow, etc..
You'd probably want to go along the military path and skill into PVP. It'll take a good bit for you to get skilled up, but you can have fun instantly.

Unless you've got a 3ish+ month old account on Something Awful, you probably wont be able to tag along with me. I'm out in a big alliance where the biggest way a new person can join the alliance is by being a member of that forum for a while. I can try to talk to some people and find you a home, but no guarantees. Really, I encourage you to interact with people and join a corporation based on your own interests.

I can choose all my skills and attributes but once I get to the Specialization panel (after career field selection) nothing is on the page except a picture at the bottom and then my game says lost connection to server but I can log in immediately after. Actually, the only things we've lost against them are things we had in their space. Today, we raped them and kept their dreads logged off. I myself got in on 19 battleship kills and 2 heavy interdictor kills soo far.

AAA isn't a problem. Now Stain, Red.Overlord, and the other russians added in there and we get a bit of a rough spot. Either way, it'll just boil down to a time zone war and the russians simply cant keep up with that.

Amit, it doesn't take long to get used to it. By default, there is a lot less info on the screen. I've put all the stuff extra on there so I can have a better understanding of the things around me. The local channel on the left, it's there so I can see how many how many hostiles are in system with me. If you're a new player in empire, there's not really a reason to have it separated from the rest of your chats. The velocity and radial velocity column in the overview are there so I can see if a target is moving, and if so if he is moving towards or away from me. The angular velocity tells me what his orbiting rate on me is. It is measured in radians and tells me if my guns will be able to track him when shooting. The fleet and broadcast windows, you probably wont use those until you get into a player owned corporation for yourself.

Roboto, yeah, if Goonfleet dies, I'd be sad, but then laugh my ass off.

You lose the ship your in, but the cargo is usually recoverable. TomClancey blew up my shuttle for absolutely no reason when I was in his "corporation". You can also get insurance for your ship (it's recommended). I got 2.5k Isk (for a 9.5k ship, chose the cheapest insurance, and look at what it got me) after TC's little mishap.

and to play for free:
600m isk for 60 days
average income is 20m/hr
30 hrs grinding for isk to play for 60 days is p cool
but then you'll need isks for something else, which is why i stopped doing that :(

Not really that much. More aesthetic than anything.

Doesn't matter any more since you can change any race into any other race easily enough. There used to be special combinations you could make to give yourself specific starting skills, but now you start with some basic skills and a 100% bonus to training time.

I think it's worth it. But I'm to the point where I don't have to play much and can still may with ISK. I'll probably go back to $ once I've got my truck and can drive to work.

Still a very fun game. And you can get better without actually having to play. (Skill training happens regardless of being logged on/off.)
