I was wonderin if anyone has used sketchup to model buildings and vehicles etc. Because i've got version 6 which can export 3ds, and using it would be way eaisier than Gmax or Autodesk 3ds MAX

I played with it for like... around an hour.

Cool for what it's used for... but to fine-tune you'll need to learn 3DSMax anyway.

Ive seen what sketch up can do. You'd be much better off modeling in 3ds max. Max is a powerful tool and once you learn it you can create just about anything you can imagine.

u mean on the MAC? correct me if im wrong but i think it is a MAC app

but anywayz not that, that matters i think that that program has absolutely NO tools

E: not sure if it is for windows too tho

The version I've seen is for Windows.

It looks like a good rapid prototyping tool, but for working within the constraints of Blam! I think you'll be much better off with Max.

e: The reason is that Sketchup is good for coming up with a rough model to show off an idea in 3D, but it's imprecise and doesn't give you all the control you need; Max is good for precision work within parameters such as the closed-world rule, to let you build it exactly the way it should be.

I've used it to create base gemoetry then import it into max, clean it up and put it in game.
it is by no means a replacment for max but it is great for exactly what the name implies. 3d sketching. Just like Rob said.

It's best for being quick, easy and when exact things are not neccessary.

[edit]Also, Massive black (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlgtLXhwJSM) uses it

Sketchup causes tons of errors, like said, 3d drawing and sketches/concepts.

After watching that massive black video, I'm tempted to learn sketchup.

I've used it for about 2-3 hours. I've made a few things

Like Rob said, its a prototyping/architectural piece of software, definitely not game asset design. I'm going to using later in year for story boarding game ideas, its great for making basic things in a very quick amount of time.

Heres a bit of my work

5 - 10 minutes

Less than 5 minutes

Like AdvanceBo said, Sketchup causes a lot of problems. It's good for basic concept art, but not in-game stuff.

I think it's been put down so much because the majority of the stuff that is made with it sucks, and the warehouse is full of ripped models being claimed as scratch made.

lol, if only you knew more about it. MAC or Windows app.

Hey guys, thanks for the input! I only ahve Gmax, but that's relatively the same as 3DS MAX, isn't it?

Its a good tool to use for architecture. I used it for my design class. Its has its perks, but its pretty limited.

I've used sketchup in my haloce maps. (Full map development)There is some work cleaning up after exporting. This one is done http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/xz8kmQFCANU8XuDAOH3wTA?authkey=vTcAZdH_zIA&feat=directlink. I use it for coming up with ideas, like iv done a map on it before but then i just discarded it because of all the dodgy errors you get from it, you are best of using 3ds or maya, i use maya but its wether or not you like the layout, maya the tools are easier to access i think, iv tried using 3ds but i just cant work it out. best regards

-Noob question alert-

3ds max, did you all buy it? or is it free?

I don't know whether this question is serious or not, but I will answer it. Gmax, the watered down version of 3ds Max, is free. 3ds Max is not though.

Gmax is great for just Box modeling for fun IMO. That's what I used it for anyways. I always loved to pull it out and start seeing what box map I could create out of randomness that day. Good times....before it abruptly stopped working.

Sketchup is like what the video said it was. IT's basically the ability for concept artists to build a 3d idea and show it to the actual modelers for referencing. That's how I think it should be used.

Pretty good map for a sketchup build whoever made it. It looks pretty good to play in, but it would have been nice if there were some cliffs.
