Is the series as a whole a good read though? Needed something to read, so I figured I may as well look into something that I knew a little about.

The original three (Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike) are excellent. Dunno bout the rest, haven't read them.

Noob question. Were the books made from the game, or other way around?

The books are completely different content from the games, except for The Flood, which was basically all of Halo 1.

well, I remember people trying to say the last one and\or two books sucked too but I ended up enjoying them and having a hard time putting them down. Therefore I dont ever leave anyone to decide if I should buy a Halo

km i expected better from you.
i hate to say it, but i just feel like my intelligence is being insulted by the shear amount of Anti-depth the books have.
There as multi-dimensional as cardboard.
Look honest to god the only reason these books have done anything, at all is because 13-14 year olds Exist AND it has halo tattoo'd onto the cover.
There absolutely splendourifucsly garbage.

I like the books for the backstory. They're like an entertaining movie and not a big budget epic.

I thought the books were shallow. The author made no attempts at ever developing characters, and so it was hard to care if they lived or died. In my experience, the people who really enjoyed these books only did so out of fanboyism or curiosity. The series is not something I'd recommend reading for fun.

I for one enjoyed the books...er book.
I only read fall of reach and am working my way through the flood.
I haven't found the time to read lately.

I think the reason some of you didn't like them is because you started reading them with high expectations, and when they didn't live up to your expectations, you thought they sucked.
About The Cole Protocol, I'll give my input about it once I finish reading it. Had to stop cause of damn homework.

This. People have different opinions on books I guess. I'm sure half the people here would like to read new Sherlock Holmes instead of a new Halo book (just as an example and not a comparison).

the ability to fly across the universe twice, get armor and get into 2 space fights within a chapter.
been a while since i read the fall of reach but it's just terrible man. theres no descriptive detail, and the sub plots are horrendous, if they exist at all.

I've read plenty of books in my 16 years.
I agree that they arent the most stimulating read or even the best written, but to get background info on the series they are a good read.

what i found cool is that the book described the cole protocol and in the first cutscene in halo 1 keyes tells cortana to put the cole protocol into effect
i found the books interesting because it gives you the perspective of a different character than the master chief. for example, all of the marines in the flood.
campaign map ideas...

Initially I hadn't planned on explaining my opinion, but I will.
They are bad for three main reasons:
-There is no character development or memorable characters
-The action is like listening to someone stoned going off on a tangent following the phrase "wouldn't it be cool if..." None of it is remotely realistic or engaging, and shit is constantly being pulled out of the author's ass that makes little to no sense even as science-fiction extrapolation goes.
-The writing itself is terrible. The sentence structure is primitive, and the cultural and historical awareness of the book is non-existent. It's not thought provoking, you the reader gain nothing from the experience. Metaphors and imagery, actually, all of the creative language (if you can find any) is cheesy and unoriginal, and the childishness with which things are described makes it impossible to be immersed in the work.
I just thought it was crap: unless knowing the complete Halo back-story is how you measure yourself as a human being, I really wouldn't bother.

I find the majority of the books entertaining, but they are not really that great. The only one which I can read over and over again is First Strike. That's the only one I would consider great.

I considered The Flood to be awesome the first two times reading it, then it was Ghosts of Onix, and then Contact Harvest was probably one of my favorites. But I had MANY favorite parts throughout the books and the series. I didn't like First Strike as a whole, but there were some favorite parts in it.

Perhaps explain your reasoning for liking the flood? It's considered the worst out of all the books. How you can like that over First Strike amazes me.

Woah. I'm sort of surprised by the anti-book backlash. In my opinion, The Fall of Reach was quite good, even taking it out of a Halo context. The Flood was horrible- just a runthrough of the game plus some barely-decent backstory. I liked First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx, but they weren't quite as good as The Fall of Reach. I liked Contact: Harvest because it had so much background detail. Sure, there were sections here and there that read like the Halo bible, but I read that sort of stuff for fun. :P All 3 of those were still enjoyable though.
Even if you don't like them, I can't see them as horrible. Timo, I'd say they are definitely worth a read. You could get through them in a few days maximum. Just be sure to avoid The Flood, and from the sounds of it, The Cole Protocol.

I enjoyed every book, yes, even The Flood. I must admit, my favorite one was Fall of Reach though. I liked the last two, because they weren't following John, which was something new for me. I'm looking forward to reading this one, whenever I get my hands on it.
