From Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21263)
"...NIMF also warned parents that excessive and compulsive video game play could be a sign of video game addiction, which the Institute and addiction experts describe as a "real problem." The group notes that the American Psychiatric Association has received calls to add video game addiction to its list of official mental disorders..."
Let's have a talk about this shall we?
Snaf: well damn look at that
Snaf: it's not a mother with no parenting ethics or social education ranting
JeanLuc: it's a chemical addiction
Snaf: lol
JeanLuc: Because, of course
JeanLuc: In the...what, 25 years games have been out
JeanLuc: We've evolved so much as a species that there is a hormone in our DNA that makes us addicted to video games
Yet again, another example of society pushing responsibility away from one thing (the parents in this case), and blaming it on something else.

Where are you pulling that from? Addiction can be psychological dependence too.

The report card gave an "Incomplete" grade for parental involvement, as the Institute feels that too many parents are not using information like game ratings when purchasing games for the children. Parents were also criticized for not using parental controls or screen time limits enough.
What?

1) You got me there, addiction usually hits me as a hormonal thing (chemical imbalance, that kinda deal).
2) That was in reference to the addiction part of the article.
Evidently I could have worded this entire thing better :fail:

Many thugs are using human victims for batting practice. Let's ban baseball now, shall we?
Videogame addiction is the result of
1. stupid parent who doesn't discipline the kid
2. kid with a weak mind. In Ontario there was the case of a dad who took away his son's 360 because his son was getting addicted. He did give his son a lecture too. The son, instead of saying sorry and living through his punishment, ran away when his parents were asleep and literally got himself killed outside. I wouldn't blame the parents here, but cases like these are pretty rare anyway.
Yeah, the stupid media just loves to blame digital entertainment for causing malevolent behavior. They've already done it with R-rated action movies in the days before video games became popular.
Cool fact: Jack Thompson tried to blame games on Cho Seung Hui's massacre. Turned out that Cho didn't even play games after he grew up, and when he did game it was adventure stuff.

What?
A trend I've noticed with anything video games-related is it's always shitty parenting. Your ten-year old should not be playing Grand Theft Auto twelve hours a day. It seems as if common sense is a quality a severe minority of humanity has.
I used to get so pissed at my parents when they took my games away when I was a kid, but I see why now.

Someone could easily be addicted to videogames, but I don't think it should be warranted as an actual addiction. People are addicted to a myriad of different things, and a lot of people play videogames. Therefore, it shouldn't be surprising when you find that some people are addicted to videogames. In children, I think it's just lame parenting. Just take the game away, the kid will be pissed for a bit, but eventually forget about it.

I like to think of myself as a video game addict, but I don't have a problem. Same way House is addicted to Vicodin.

You may be surprised to know that some parents do this on purpose. I found with my step-siblings that this is a very easy way to get kids to stfu. Of course, if you are to use this, you have to try and make sure it's not a game like GTA, just in case they're impressionable idiots. Whenever the kids would bitch, we gave them Rock Band/Guitar Hero, or after this Christmas, Wii Music/Fit. That way, if they are impressionable idiots (one of them is), the worst we're doing to them is giving them some kind of interest in music, or something along the lines of productivity.

I have no idea what you are whining about. You can be addicted to games, people in the world do have a serious problem with video game addiction. Theres a health centre in Holland specifically for video game rehab.
I'm just surprised the way they will tackle the problem.

Video Game Addiction?
All I can hear is the slow, but steady movement of the drug companies relabeling Ritalin with (*can also retard effects of VGA).
I understand that it is an addiction, but for there to be press about it? Why do more mothers in America need another reason to listen to Hillary Clinton?
Seriously, what kind of disorder will American doctors come up with next? Running Deficit Disorder? McDonalds Food Addiction Disorder? Isn't it enough that they gave Western mother's an excuse to give their kids medicine instead of actually learning how to parent properly?

Some guys addicted to a ride at six flags, also who said drugs had to be used? Addiction can be treated without drugs. What happens if your addicted to drugs? Bamboozled.

I don't think people were always treating ADD or ADHD with Ritalin, it was also called discipline (I'm not saying ADD or ADHD aren't real, I'm just saying that many cases are simply the laziness of the parents). Drug companies see a way to make a profit, that is what their shareholders want. People want the quick and easy fix, so if Jimmy is playing Xbox 360 and failing all of his classes, one might be tempted to give him some Ritalin: VGA Edition (used to be though you'd take it away from him and tell him to go study, but nobody likes being the bad guy).
If there is a demand for it, it will be made. If there is no demand for it, thank God.

If you play something fun and that causes you entertainment, then you're going to play it again. It's as if they think we didn't know this already. :conspiracy:
