Ok, so today I was looking through my closet and found my hard drive for my OLD ass computer. I hooked it up to my PCI vai raid card that has the old ass Prong hardrive connectors (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/images/long-ide-cable.jpg).

So woohoo the drive works! So I was looking through it and guess what I found.

Soooo I want to recover the CD key from this hard drives registry. The problem is that I can't boot from this drive because its connected to a PCI card because this computer is too new and it does not have the old hardrive connectors on the mobo.

I really want to get my legit key back so HALP!

hmm, only thing i can think of is use vmware or virtual pc, and have it use that hard drive as the boot device, dunno if that's even possible tho.

-edit- i just checked in vmware workstation, and it does look like you can use a physical drive.

ill send you a link to it via pm in a few minutes.

can't you just edit the boot.ini to have the option of booting from either drive?
and, was this old drives OS installed on your current motherboard?
cause if not..your SOL...

Would the CD key actually be there because it doesn't look like Windows is even on that hard drive, so where will it read registry key from?

??
hes in the program files directory, windows is most likely installed.

also killa, since hes using a virtual machine, the mobo and everything will be different, but he should still be able to boot and get his key.

if he cant get ghosts proggy to run, he can just use regedit to export the halo reg entries and import them into his new install.... then use ghosts tool to get the key that way.

-edit-

after some reading, it appears you can edit, or at least view registry entries on a slave HD... which will save you alot of time and pain if it works...

http://www.rwin.ch/xp-live/regedit.htm

ignore the live cd stuff, an you'd prolly want to load software instead of system...

halo keys are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Halo CE

export that to a file somewhere you can access, and import it into your working hd.

I didn't know ya could read reg files from a slave drive :-?
Altho I probally won't have much use for it, I might in the future, and always good to know..

I loaded the software keys from my old computer and got the CD key!
Now I could decrypt the key OR I could just open the registry on my current computer and overwrite the current key with the legit one with out decrypting.

I'm going to decrypt it I think. Its safer.

Fuck THIS (http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=57316) is going to take a while.

then use ghost's cd key tool to get the actual key.

I can't it reads straight from the registry you can't input the numbers manually. I just finished to hopefully the key is right.

... i know, im saying once you import the halo registry from the old drive to the new one, you can then use ghosts tool.

I'm going to try and install Halo PC on this computer if the key works :downs: if not I'll try that.

The CD key works but I'm still getting a "This game has closed down error" when I try to join my dedicated server. This thing is really starting to piss me off.

Does it work with regular servers?

Inferno
December 8th, 2008, 05:51 PM
Yes. The reason I got my key back mainly is to run a dedicated server on halo 1.00.

StankBacon
December 8th, 2008, 06:56 PM
lol... you don't need a cd key at all to run a dedi...

its either your dedi and client ports are still conflicting, or this (http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?nid=354)

Actually I fixed it. I downloaded a patched haloceded. Seems to be working I'll tell you guys when I'm sure.

EDIT-

AHAHAH! YES! I would like to thank Noel for being the first person to join Inf3rn0Ser\/er-Dedicated[]wnfest and confirming the server is working.
For a celebration I owned him 5 times and he quit.

Anyways for those of you wanting to play the server is Inf3rn0Ser\/er-Dedicated[]wnfest and its on halo 1.00

Is there anyway I could use this drive I have as a vista boot drive? Like if I actually mounted it inside the computer and hooked it up is there anyway I could get a option screen on boot up and have it ask me if I want to boot XP off my main drive or vista off the PCI drive?

KiLLa

yea, write a boot.ini which points to both drives...
you'd need to know what partition and what not, but it COULD be done...if your capable(or even me) of doing it, is a different story..
