I have a little time this weekend and I'm trying to figure out what causes this effect--

What I mean is, what causes the "spikes" in the explosion?

Part of the effect tag. If I had that explosion effect I could tell you more.

The explosion shown is from weapons/plasma rifle/effects/detonate.effect, I think.
I'm not sure about that flash bitmap, though.

there is only one particle in the effect--
flash h stealth cannon. It also has only one particle count.
It uses the flares weapon lens bitmap. It looks nothing like that.

I still can't. I took away the particle system too. Are you sure it's the fuel rod explosion particle?

I was looking through tags then I saw CAD's post. The man's right. I did a little messing around in Blood Gulch, and the specific part of that tag that causes it is effects\particles\energy\tracer c generic. The way the effect applies this particle tag has something to do with it though. It pretty much randomly displays a few of those in a spiky pattern.
