NEW YORK (CNN) -- A US Airways plane was down in the Hudson River on Thursday after attempting to take off from LaGuardia Airport, officials said. The plane entered the water Thursday afternoon following a failed takeoff, the FAA says.
US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, was headed to Charlotte, North Carolina, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
A passenger said he was "pretty sure" everybody on the plane got out.
"Somehow, the plane stayed afloat and we were all able to get on a raft," said the passenger, Alberto Panero. "It's just incredible now that everyone's still alive."
Current speculation is a bird collision, causing the pilot to turn back but mess up somehow. Kudos to the pilot for making an excellent landing in the water though. All the passengers and crew seem to be unharmed.

Yeah, this could have been tragic. I don't want to even think about the results of it striking New York.

Good thing nothing bad happened and everyone is okay. Otherwise, I would feel really bad about making that picture.
e: Holy shit, post #911 in RFP, about a plane crashing in New York.

'Twas a jinx, I say! Just a couple of days ago, the FAA was celebrating 2 years without a fatality. COINCIDENCE? :colbert:
But seriously, good to see that everyone got out okay.

see stuff like this scares the fuck out of me, and it doesnt help that im getting on a plane this saturday. to go to D.C.
last summer i was alone in D.C. waiting for my flight to happen, and i see this guy in a turban walking around. he eventually sat down a few seats away from me. that was not a fun plane ride. i know its terrible to profile sombody like that based on race, but its kinda hard not to.
also, the title of this thread reads aeroplane. what is the difference between an aeroplane and an airplane?

I was watching it Live earlier (them playing around with wreckage). I saw the text saying Hudson river, I had no idea what river it was so I was just damn some plane went down in a river in NY.
Then they panned the camera and showed Manhattan skyscapes and I was like holy shit that is central NY.
Glad everyone got out and pilot managed to set it down safely in the water, anything else would have been a disaster.

I would just be pissed that my cell phone got wet if I was in that plane. I mean, nothing tragic happened, so that's the only thing I'd have to be worried about.

That water had to be freezing though.
And it's already being joked about online:

Ah yes, the once in awhile events that occur in the Hudson River. I could've walked to the Hudson and watch, but there wasn't much happening.
Glad everyone was safe though. Very glad.
