Do the Nvidia 9000GT series' have any problems with running halo? I've heard that some of the 8000 cards have problems with displaying decals and I wanted to know if it's the same for the 9000's.

This (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=5DDW&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=nvidia&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0) is is card I'd like to get. Otherwise, I might get this (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=47B3&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=7600&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0). Advice would be much appreciated ;)

For the money, the 4850 is on the top. It's in the upper hundreds range, but plays all my games at full + max rez at a playable FPS.

Plus, with dx10 games, it has free 4xAA, something no nVdia card card has.

Christ sake we have a threat that's stickied for this. Even though the HD4870 is a better card, it costs much more (especially on that site). XFX seems to be a good brand and that card is the best for the price.

As long as you have the right drivers, everything should display perfectly in Halo (except maybe the camouflage).

E: itszutak it still costs more than the 9600GT, nearly 2x more on the site he's using. Sasc, go with the 9600GT.

What do you mean by free 4xAA?

Xetsuei

It won't affect the performance when you turn 4xAA on.

But Halo doesn't have AA whatsoever, so that doesn't apply to this.

Just curious, Why is that?

Xetsuei

Can't remember off the top of my head, think it's something having to do with the memory. Go to Google if you want the exact reason.

On a kind of side question, what is mostly used for anti aliasing? By that, I mean hardware Wise.

Memory.

You could always get a 4830 if you can't afford a 4870.

No.

No.

That was fast.

And so there is! I missed that thread. Thanks for the help. I'll have a look around for the best price, unless I find a better card that's around the same price.

IIRC, the free 4x AA was only on the Xbox 360 since it had the 10MB e-DRAM embedded on the GPU's die. The PC derivatives of those cores (all HD series cards) don't have that 10MB e-DRAM included. So I don't think there is free 4x AA. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

InnerGoat

It's not free AA, just the performance hit is so small with all the shading power they have

Pyong Kawaguchi
January 18th, 2009, 04:40 PM
Why doesnt it seem to show up for the 360 when running in HD?

InnerGoat
January 18th, 2009, 06:14 PM
Probably because the x360 is upscaling the image

And there my friends, is why the xbox 360 is so inferior to a pc :)

I am sorry for the bluntness but, no fucking shit. PC's will always be better than consoles. Consoles are aimed at people who don't have enough money for a gaming PC.

Maybe so, but these days it seems the PC gets shitloads of halfassed console ports that aren't exactly showing off what good PC hardware can really do.

But then again, so does the xbox 360.

Ok, so in the end I bought this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inno-3D-GeForce-Express-Graphics/dp/B00140K3W0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232461704&sr=8-4) card.

The damn thing won't work. I shove the card in the PCI slot and when I turn on the computer, it stays turned on for around 5 seconds and then turns itself off. It then automatically turns back on a few seconds later and does the same again. It does this 2 times. At the 3rd attempt it turns on but it uses the integrated graphics rather than the graphics card.

Why is this happening? Is the graphics card not compatible with the motherboard?
Need Halp!

Maybe, or maybe you don't have proper cooling or damaged it by 'shoving' it into the PCI slot. I don't know to much about this, by try to find some way to maybe disable your integrated graphics, or use an install disk if it came with the card?

And does anybody know what manufacturer dell uses for 8600gt's in inspiron computers? I've wanted to know who my graphics card manufacturer was (if it was XFX, or BFG, EVGA, generic, straight from nvidia, etc.)

Lol, I didn't vigorously put it in or anything, I just slid it in ;)

And yea I read somewhere that I can Disable the integrated graphics on the Device Manager, but will I be able to still use the computer properly if it doesn't solve the problem? It's the Display adapter isn't it?

Did you put it in the PCI slot, or the PCI-E slot?
Also, you should of bought the XFX one from that other site. Better brand, better card, better price.

I smell another Agamemnon.

I'm fairly sure it was the PCI-E. It fits into the slot perfectly. Are PCI and PCI-E slots the same?

PCI slot cards are ancient now, nobody makes videocards for it anymore. Does your PC meet its min requirements?

What's your PSU's wattage, and the amperage on the 12v rail(s)?

Sasc
January 21st, 2009, 12:35 AM
I'm not sure which value is the right one. Here's what's on the PSU label:

MODEL: ATX0300P5WB Rev.:X3
INPUT: 100-127V~8A, 200-240V~4A 50/60Hz
OUTPUT: +12V / 18A -12V / 0.8A
300W MAX. +5V / 22A +5VSB / 2A
+3.3V / 17A

+5V & +3.3V 160W MAX.

You probably need a better PSU.

Xetsuei
January 21st, 2009, 07:54 AM
No, he does need a better PSU. The minimum requirements for the 9600GT are 400W and 26 amps on the 12V rail.

E: You currently have 300W, and 18 amps on the 12V rail.

Ah ok. So I need a new PSU then?

How about this (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4Q0T&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=Corsair+Memory+550W+VX+PSU&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0) one? It seems to have more than enough power to run everything, and it has 41A on the 12V rail.

Yeah, that will do fine.

Plenty of people have run the 9600GT on 300W. Read the reviews on NewEgg for the Low-Profile version if you want to see for yourself (and this version has the same specs as any other reference 9600GT). 300W is sufficient.

Xetsuei

Though most card's I've seen on newegg (9600GT) need a 400W PSU.
