View Full Version : I need a little vid-card advice

Well, here's the deal. I got a free computer from a co-worker's son. All it needed was a HDD, sound card and video card (and for my purposes, a multi card reader & wireless card). The video card it has right now is a pathetic little 64 mb card.
I'm going to be spending a little over $2K on a new tablet pc that will kick the crap out of my tower.... but in the meantime, I only have this tower to work with, as my laptop is going to be shipped out for testing due to a lawsuit against the manufacturer. I want to spend less than 70 dollars on a gfx card , and of course found some on newegg.com.
Can anyone make a suggestion for me on any of these here?

AGP or PCI-E?
AGP:

PCI-E x16:

I would go for one of those two.

e-GeForce 7600GS 256MB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130075)
Had it in one of my older pc's. It works great with just about everything.

I hope you mean PCIe... If so, 7600gs. If you really are stuck on plain old PCI... 6200.
Xet thats a GS.

thats probably the best out of the bunch. Out of the cards that you linked to the best are the 7300 GS and LE because the others are all old SM2.0 cards or they flat out suck or are simply vastly outdated.
[edit]wait...PCI?
not too many options there, but your best bet would have to be either a 6200, low end 7 series card with PCI of some kind or an X1300 with PCI. All are pretty expensive for the performance though.

well i now i don't know if my board is pci or pci-e.... how do i check for this? i don't have any papers from the mobo.
damn, i'm used to mobile pc's.... which is why i'm getting that tablet. having a tower is nice though, i'm beginning to realize.

Whatever low end card you choose, get the latest generation. 7xxx > X1xxx > 6xxx > Xxxx > 9xxx > 5xxx

you might have AGP too :/
look inside the case to check.

The order of the expansion slots from top to bottom is as follows:
PCI Express 1X
PCI Express 16X
AGP (or the wider yellow slot)
PCI
PCI
PCI
You are looking at the stuff just below the chipset fan, which is below the CPU socket.

It would help if you told us what mobo you're using snaf.

i would be able to if i had purchased this computer. it was a scratch system which was given to me.
i helped my friend build his computer, which was undoubtably easier, being that we knew what parts we had :/
