I was running lightmaps for a Halo CE level.
Took 9 FUCKING HOURS.
It would have finished in about 5 minutes, when all of a sudden, Windows restarted for NO FUCKING REASON.
I didn't save.

It turned out that Windows Automatic Update had downloaded some fucking updates and installed them even though I told it not to.

Yes, now I KNOW my copy of XP hates me.
FUCK YOU WINDOWS.
FUCK. YOU.

That's actually pretty rough.

Maybe let it run overnight?

This is why I always have Windows Update to check for Updates, but not download them until I say so.

This is what I have set as well but it seems like if I don't download the update with in a certain amount of time, it'll do it anyways.

Are you using Vista or XP? I'm using Vista and it never downloads on its own with updates available...

Instead of running lightmaps again and wasting time, its MUCH faster to bake them in 3ds max using that tool that was released earlier.

Lmfao. This is why when I'm working on a web design page learning to be OCD with Ctrl+S is a godsend.

Yeah, I have it set the same way, but it downloaded anyway, and restarted without warning. Now I remember why I hate Windows.
I'm running XP, btw.

You hate what you don't understand how to use? If it's set up correctly there is no way it will automatically restart without your permission.

if you have it set up a certain way it will give you a 5 minute countdown to restart, which is what I'm guessing happened.

I did.

So don't use Windows then.

i always get a pop up that lets me either click restart now, or postpone, 5 minutes being the default postpone time.

never saw a countdown.

You can change/remove that countdown:
http://www.ghacks.net/2007/11/18/disable-restart-after-automatic-updates/

That's what I did because I found the automatic restart really annoying.

This is what I do to stop it. And it's really easy to remember how to do it so you don't have to look up the fix everytime you want to use it.

E: nvm, i have no idea what that is. Look to my next post for the real solution.

Actually, this is what you should do: Go to control panel, go to administrative tools, then services, then in teh list look for automatic updates, then right click it and click stop. Problem solved.

http://computerboom.blogspot.com/2008/10/disable-annoying-auto-reboot-after.html

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001
If you wish to do it manually in the group policy editor (also useful if you wish to make it part of your domain policy), here's how:
Run gpedit.msc or the domain policy editor. Under Computer Configuration, browse to Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update. To help confuse you, Microsoft mixes allow and deny statementes, sometimes including double negatives to keep the number of MCSE's in demand artificially high. The option you seek is called "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations" - it's about half way down the list. Double click it and set it to Enabled. You're done!
This works on Windows 2000 SP3 and up, XP SP1, 2, 3 , Vista , and Windows Server 2003.

that's still not a countdown, it wont just restart automatically unless you hit restart now.

even if you postpone it, that box will still come back up and wait for you to tell it to restart.

op's computer either crashed, or he hit restart now without noticing.

Look's like a countdown to me. At least that is what I got:

Yea, this. It took me 5 days ( SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL) and my lightmaps came out to shit because I didn't have some things set up correctly...So..I'd definitely go with baking/mental ray.

I saw a countdown on mine until a recent update.
