My 360 finally red ringed on me :(.
What's worse is that I have the Halo 3 one, so I'm half afraid to send it in for fear of getting a white one returned to me. Does anyone know if they will actually fix it, rather than send me a refurbished white one?

If you're man enough to void the warranty that is.
I believe they do fix it, but if it's really FUBAR (i.e. something burned and adhered to the mobo) they may send you a refurbished white one.
speaking of 360s, mine just RRODed too (it's an early model with the first wave of parts, including bad heatsinks). I might buy an Arcade (still $199 Canadian even with exchange rate :P) and just transfer the HDD over, since MS will take forever to repair/replace the 360.

I got 3 Red Rings before, I took out the hard drive after shutting it off put it back in and presto. Nothing ever really happened to my Box, although it has been stuttering reading completely fine disks unless I wash them with glass cleaner..

How does popping the hard drive out and in solve an overheating problem?

It's not a heat problem, it's from what I have read when teh GPU gets unseated from the mobo.

I take this to mean that the 360 doesn't have a FUBAR problem, therefore I think it'll be safe to send it to MS and expect to have it back rather than get a refurbished one.

Well, sometimes the mobo is warps, and that's what unseats it from what I've read. That's why it's classified as a general hardware failure I believe, because once it warps, everything else can go to hell.

I thought they just sent you another one because it's faster for them...
AKA you send them yours... they send you someone else's refurb while they fix yours.... then send your refurb to someone else.....
but that's just me.
You could always try the towel trick.... :P

Take photos of distinguishing marks even though its a special edition. Any little scrapes, etc. Take a picture of the serial. Take out your harddrive before you send it to them if you can. If you can't, buy the cheapest harddrive peripheral and just send them the xbox with that clean hd when you have yours with all the data on it.

You're always allowed to remove the hard drive before sending in a 360 for repairs, in fact I think they suggested that you do so. The HDD is easily detachable, after all.

Store warranty > Microsoft. When it comes to xbox's I have always gotten the store warranty. Yes its like $50, but its worth it. My brother red rings 2 days ago and 30 minutes later he was playing again on a new box...
EDIT: best buy has a good program, you get to keep your HHD so now we have 4, 2 120 gigs and 2 20 gigs and only 2 xboxs... wah?

3 slots is Complete System Failure.
2 slots is over heating.

That happens because of heat cycles you put it through.. :ssh:

No, but even if I did, it's not like they have any H3 #60's to replace it.
I tried the towel trick for a second time, so far it's working, but I'm afraid to push it.

Bite the bullet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bite_the_bullet) - taking a position with difficult consequences.
Unless you were referring to your decision to send in your 360 and accept the risk of getting a white one back, you misused that phrase.
Misuse of phrases makes me >=U

For mine, I believe, they gave me back the same one. I checked the serial and it is identical. Unless if they swapped that out too and put it in the new one. But then my brother said he noticed a scratch on it that was there before.

A few weeks ago my dad's 360 RROD'ed. I didn't have a TV at the time, so I let him borrow it.
My family buys a replacement HDTV for the one I loaned them in September and never got back.
Everything's fine and dandy, but my dad is still borrowing my Xbox until he gets a new one. The warranty was gone on his old RROD'ed one so he tried opening it up and "fixing" it using some dumb youtube tutorial; basically, open it up and apply different thermal grease to the heat sink. Probably ignoring my advice, he does the botched operation and the dead console doesn't start up. The dead xbox was still dead.
Last Wednesday, my parents call the school in the middle of English class and I get pulled out of class. Parents say that my Xbox RROD'ed. They buy themselves a new Xbox from Curcuit City. They were just about to go to Costco and return mine but I was concerned that some of my data was tied to the console itself and that I would lose it.
I now have a very shiny Sharp Aquos with HD cable but no video game console whatsoever.
GG. Would play again.
I do have to say that Costco has a great return policy though. Dumping the $550 bundle for full price as soon as my parents get around to returning it. Which will likely be some time in December.

^ ditto
Just a fact: Halo 3 edition 360s were the first to sport Falcon mobos, with 65nm CPUs (instead of the older 90nm ones). The heat was reduced, but not enough, hence H3 edition 360s still RRODed (the GPU was still 90 nm).
Now 360s use a Jasper mobo with both 65nm CPUs and 65 nm GPUs, hence the RROD problem should (theoretically) not occur in such frequency any more. I just sent in my 2006 360 for repairs, but I think I'll buy an Arcade system too (just transfer over the HDD) as the latest ones have built-in flash and Jasper mobos, plus it'll be cool to try some of the free Arcade games included (the only one I have is Geometry wars, downloaded in 07 when MS offered arcade games free as compensation for the service bonkering).
Masters, have you sent in the 360 for repairs?

Did they give a date for save xboxes?
Like all xbox's purchased after --|-- are safe?
Mr Buckshot
January 28th, 2009, 09:24 PM
No official date, just google around a bit and some resourceful users will definitely have posted the approximate lot number and date for "safe" X360s. They did it with the H3 edition.

The newer consoles have a lower wattage power adapter and will be like, 110watts vs. 150 or whatever the old one was. It should say the wattage somewhere near the serial number.
