View Full Version : Halo Custom Edition On Windows 7

Ah Windows 7, the pinnacle of the new age of Operating systems. Right now still in beta phase, but still usable and very stable. I decided to try this new OS by Microsoft out, and noticed something peculiar, whenever I try to start up Custom Edition in windowed mode, my computer just happens to freeze itself up. And whenever I try to run it in fullscreen it gives me the DXDIAG error.

Shit i've done to try to get it to work:

Run DXDIAG
Compatibility mode with SP2
Run as Administrator
Disable Hardware Accelleration

My PC Specs are:

Manufacturer: Dell Computer Corporation
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1400MHz, ~1.4GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Hard Drive: 36 GB
Video Card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 (Microsoft Corporation - XDDM)
Monitor: Generic Non-PnP Monitor + PnP Monitor
Sound Card: Speakers (SigmaTel C-Major Audio)
Speakers/Headphones: Stock
Keyboard: USB Root Hub
Mouse: USB Root Hub
Mouse Surface: Blue/Silver
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7000) (7000.winmain_win7beta.081212-1400)
I know the specs are kind of shitty, but everything runs fine except I don't have Areo, which I honestly could care less about.

Any help would be...helpful.

I'm using Windows 7, and Halo CE runs fine. In both full screen and windowed mode.

He knows that everyone else is able to run it. If you don't have a solution or tip for him, then do not post.

I was just saying that I have had no problems running Halo CE with that operating system. There is no need to be a bitch.

I wasn't really. I was talking to him on xfire and he was telling me how people on halomaps were of no help because of posts like yours just stating that it works for you. It wasn't directed at you, just to anyone else who might do the same thing.

Thanks Geo for saying that.

I don't need to know if you can run it fine though, I want to know how I can fix it so I can run it. So if you know how to get it to work, then go ahead and post, but if not, you don't need to post.

Not really sure of the problem, try reinstalling. Also, that's a terrible graphics card (is it a chipset? If so that's even worse), you should consider buying a new one. Even if you don't have much money, you can get something 5x better for like 40 dollars.

I looked out of curiosity, and looks like a Radeon 9800 Pro is down to $125, and I'd consider that to be medium/low-end at this point.

Mobil Radeon 9000 must be baaad. But it looks like it's a laptop chipset, and if that's the case I doubt he can get a new graphics card

If you could figure out how to change out an integrated graphics card on a laptop without changing the motherboard i'm all ears.

But i'll try out the reinstalling thing and see if it works.

Number 1, ShadowSpartan telling you it works fine for him does help you. WHy? Because you know its possible in Windows 7 (without using any fixes, as spartan would have posted) which leads you to the conclusion its only your setup.

Question is, what exactly does the error say? Load up the dxdiag?

Does all the dxdiag tests work fine on your pc?

The DXDIAG error I get when i'm loading up Halo is "failed to find *something*, please run DXDIAG"

And when I run DXDIAG everything says it's working perfectly fine. I've ran Halo CE perfectly fine on this computer with Windows XP too, so I don't know why it isn't working.

So all the 3d tests worked without an issue. Hmm.

I'd have a try at reinstalling it, perhaps it didnt fully install Halo.

Perhaps Windows 7 loads/runs 3d applications differently than Vista, which may require the computer to have more processing power and yours may be under the bar.

What is the "something"? That is information you should have posted to begin with.

Did you do an upgrade, or a clean install of Windows 7? If you did a clean install, then it is not the same setup. And even if you did an upgrade, a file could have changed, or been deleted in this case, which may be causing this error.

I did a clean instillation because I asked Selentic about it, and he said to. Same thing happened though when I had upgraded it.

I'm downloading the installer right now. And also, Halo is the only thing that doesn't work, my HEK works perfectly fine also.

Edit:
Reinstalled and still freezes in windowed mode, and here's the pretty error that I get in fullscreen:

Also, just for shits and giggles, here's my DXDIAG text file:

Don't have regular halo installed right now.

Also make sure you have AA disabled for halo CE.

What's AA?

Pyong Kawaguchi
January 30th, 2009, 08:21 PM
AA is antialiasing, it takes away the edges that shows up in lower resolutions, or on bigger screens, many gfx control panels these days have it automatically on, and since halo doesn't approve of AA, it crashes on startup.

Well, I installed the newest and all of the DirectX's, and it doesn't work.

How do I disable AntiAliasing?

Limited

Well does your graphics card override games settings for AA?

Does your gfx card have 28mb ram, or is that how much ram the device was using??

Well, I officially can't play Halo CE with this computer. Last night Geo showed me that with this PC, anitaliasing doesn't do anything to help out Halo.

Anti Aliasing doesn't do anything to help out Halo period, on any computer setup. Just try updating to the latest motherboard/chipset/graphics drivers available for your laptop. I'm running Windows 7 (as my main OS now) and I had an issue with halo not running until I updated my chipset drivers.

Does anyone else have it working on the radeon m9000? I'm not expecting the drivers for that old thing to ever work right in W7, but have you tried the -useff and -safemode startup arguments?

Rook

As others have said every aspect of CE has worked fine for me on 7. Before 7 did you run it on XP or Vista?

What did -use13, -use11 do? Didn't they force a specific version of pixel shader? Maybe you should try that.
