View Full Version : Wow. I failed with Linux

So I installed Ubuntu, making it dual-booting with Vista on it. I made Ubuntu make another partition by resizing my original partition.
So I waited for a hour or two, and it stayed at 0% the entire time. I began to lose my patience, and stupidly I shut down the computer. (By clicking the button only once) The text came up, and it didnt shutdown all the way. I stupidly again do a force shutdown, and thought I was in the clear.
Unfortunately, my patience got the best of me.
Everytime I load Windows, it shows the login screen, but it fades to black, then gives a blue screen. It says its corrupted, and I need to run the chkdsk utility. The problem is, how would I run it when I cant get into windows?
I only can guess its in the Vista Install Disk, but I cant find it.
I really hate Linux, I really do. Its mostly my fault, but it wont do anything that should be simple. No wireless internet, no disk fix, no nothing.
I had Kubuntu before, but I never used it. This whole thing is my fault, and I cant do anything to fix it.
If someone could, please get the chkdsk utility for me please.
Thanks for reading this very long post. Also, be free to say tl:dr :P

Oh wow. Never interrupt a partition, genius. Can't you try starting up in safemode with command prompt or us a CD to boot up in Ubuntu and download some disk checking utility and run that?

Yeah I saw this thread earlier but I'm not really sure what'll fix a partition so I can't really help with this.

Can't you try to ask MS for a new install disk?

I did the same thing after waiting on Acronis Disk Director (gave up and forced shut down, corrupted Windows).
Easy as pie to fix, insert Windows CD/DVD > Start Up Repair.
So get a Windows disk for whatever version of Windows you have.

@Needles: I havent tried that, but Im looking around for my install disk.
@TPE: I cant use Gparted, because it says there are inconsistences in my hardrive, and it requires chkdsk /f, then reboot twice to use it.
@Freelancer: Like I said to Needles, I am looking around for my install disk right now, so Ill be fixing it soon.

So now I have a ultimatum.
Either I have a full run through of my house, or use my HP Recovery Tool (Which came with the computer, however it resets it to original factory conditions.
Sigh.

yeah, just load up with your original install disk, and go to recovery console. you can run chkdsk there. identify the files you need to repair, and then you can copy them and what not. should boot good, unless you totally fucked it. or the easiest way to do it is to just copy all the info off the hdd and just reformat and install.

Well, things are fine now, just reinstalling some stuff. Luckly, most of the stuff was still on my external drive, so its all good.
My firewall/antivirus, spybot, STARCRAFT, and others did not survive.
Still, its fine I guess.

GetDataBack will be able to recover any files lost in the format (provided that your hard drive didn't already write over those sectors).
