View Full Version : Am I a bad person?

Llama Juice
February 1st, 2009, 08:11 AM
The people that live upstairs from me are absolute douchebags.

One of them, Jason isn't that bad. He's apologized for his roommate Ryan, but Ryan still doesn't understand common courtesy of apartments.

Ryan is a fan of Daft Punk. How do I know this? He plays Daft Punk every day, all day, I'm guessing with his speakers on the floor facing down.

There's been nights that we've gone up there a few times to ask them to turn it down (2 AM... and their music out powers my Xbox...) Or.. we'll be trying to sleep and they just keep it going.

I've reported them to the office here, and still they are douches.

Yesterday I looked at the available wireless networks in the area, and found "Alive." I assumed it was the douches upstairs just because they seem like they'd be stupid enough to not protect a wireless network in Orlando... the next day I was leaving the apartment, I got in my truck and saw someone walk into the apartment above mine, wearing a T-shirt that said "Alive" on the back. Later that day I went on their network to look around.

They have a basic Linksys WRT54G or whatever... the cheap one that everyone buys. So I put in the default username/pass... and OMFG I'm in. I went over to their DHCP table to check the computer names that are connected, and sure enough there's a Jason____ and a Ryan ____ (last names... can't remember em) connected.

All I did was release his DHCP without renewing it...

So they've been without internet for about 12 hours now.... and they still haven't figured it out.

Am I a bad person for doing this? Or.. am I justified?

Daft Punk is great but not everyday all day. Thats too excessive.

I agree they must suck to have as upstairs roommates. I have that problem but with neighbours that are next to me. They seem to know understand how to close a door without slamming it, especially their front door. Which seems to open day and night.

Are they the kind of people that will be able to tell whats wrong with their internet and fix it?

I'm hoping no, then they come down to you and ask if you can fix it, you go in there and look worried/puzzled but fix it, then hopefully they will like you alot more and turn down their music.

Thats the best outcome of the situation, the flipside is they figure out it was you and turn up their music.

I did this to my neighbors a couple of years ago. Though, I didn't have any particular reason for it... I was just bored and home alone on a Saturday.

Maybe randomly encrypt it every now and then? Or rename it a whole bunch to make sentences and make them think it's a ghost.

I think Alive has something to do with their Daft Punk-edness'

No, you're not a bad person, just hope you won't get called out.

If the music annoying, just send a "passive-aggressive" note =D and shut down the wireless for a bit. Make Jason blame Ryan.

Llama Juice
February 1st, 2009, 09:17 AM
Yea, I was planning on a passive agressive note left on their door. I've been thinking about that for a while.

It would pretty much just say that he's played daft punk to death, and that not everyone wants to hear it 24/7. I would then probably tape a CD/DVD full of MP3s of music that's not Daft Punk... just to be helpful.

I'd say if you had no other choice but to live in that apartment, it was justified.

Still, that is pretty unfair of them.

There's nothing more annoying than being in the middle of a download or just browsing the web to have your internet just "fail".

Llama Juice
February 1st, 2009, 10:24 AM
Haha I was thinking about it stuff like that Snowy, but... I think it's funnier to just... not let them have internet at all. My hopes are that they won't try to fix it, and they'll just go elsewhere for internets.... so I don't have to listen to their daft punk anymore.

They're still sleeping, so no musics yet... or they ran away... *shrug* I just know that there isn't that pounding in my head right now, so I'm happy.

Anton's idea was to do a Passive Aggressive note but say it's from the apartment management. Saying that they've disabled his internet due to complaints or something.

People like your upstairs neighbours are the reason why my sister moved off campus at Harvard after first year and decided to rent an off-campus apartment and buy a car (she shares the apartment with 2 of her friends too). Like seriously, she and her friends repeatedly told their neighbours that they were making too much noise during partying (mostly the arts students) and those assholes refused to stop, until my sister called the campus security. But after the campus security gets far enough away, they resume making noise...

I don't think you're a bad person for disabling their internet, but I don't think you did anything effective. Call 911, that's the solution. I believe in many states people can get ticketed for disturbing the peace, this incident you're describing is like blowing your horn non-stop in a parking lot for no reason.

I used to live in a flat in Singapore (flat = British term for a lower-end apartment), and it was pretty quiet there except for occasional loud footsteps, because there was a nearby police station whose staff would give very stern warnings to first offenders, then ticket them for repeated offenses. But then again, the whole building was made out of concrete which helped a bit.

Llama Juice
February 1st, 2009, 01:23 PM
Yea, I don't wanna take it to the cops level yet... I'm really a nice person, and getting the cops involved sucks.

Like... Jason isn't a bad guy, it's Ryan that's a douche, but who knows...

If they continue to be a douche I'll call the cops on em... but... yea.

Anyhow... is 911 who you'd call for a noise disturbance thing?... I mean.. .911 is all OMFG EMERGENCY... wouldn't you call the actual police station?... or am I just over thinking 911? lol

Mr Buckshot
February 1st, 2009, 01:26 PM
No, I wouldn't call 911 (back in singapore it was 999) if it only happens very few times. I start off my telling the neighbours to pipe down, usually they agree. For example if my neighbour has a birthday party, I just tolerate the noise, it's not like they have a birthday 365 days a year. But if they do things like play loud rock music every single day then I'm taking it to the cops.

Every once in a while everyone will be a bit noisy (i.e. birthday party), that's all right, but the people whom you describe are doing it continuously, so they deserve to be reported.

Now if you really wanna be Mr Nice Guy, buy a pair of earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, but they probably won't be that effective.

Back to the "cut off internet thing," like I said you aren't being a bad person, but if you're holding their internet access hostage then you could get in deep shit if they find out.

Llama Juice

They haven't played any music all day.

Well... there was about 20 minutes at about 8:34 AM this morning, but other than that... silence.

They have their internet back, I'll let them have it until they start playing music loudly again.

They might start thinking its you doing it if you continue to cut it off everytime they play music, especially if your the only one really complaining to them, in which case, you'll get in deep shit like was mentioned above.

Tbh I would have called the cops by now if its really as obnoxious as your saying considering you have to live and sleep in this appartment and your stuck with them... xD

And no 911 is for OMFG emergency, don't call that, call the local police department. The number should be in the phone book somewhere... its known as filing a noise complaint. Again only do this if its really as bad as you say (keeping you up at night and ruining your concentration) you dont want to be known as the annoying dude who calls the cops all the time for stupid noises (aka the people fags that neighbored us when we rented a house in seaside) we only had the place rented for a week...

really though if they're blasting daft punk (why anyone would even want to do this to begin with is beyond me) to the point where it almost sounds like your standing in the same room as them , then I'd complain xD. First make sure you restore their internet entirely and make it look like you were never there first because that could end up biting you in the ass later, its unlikely though they sound kind of stupid.

E: altho the idea of leaving them messages in their network sounds fuken hillarious.

E2: you could also just slip a note under there door or leave it on their door saying "If you dont turn that shit down I'm going to call the cops". That alone might be enough to make them stfu...

They started playing music again... and they're bigger losers than I originally thought.

When they play their rave music they have all these lights and crap going in their apartment. The whole place is mainly lit blue, with other lights flashing around. (I was walking to the laundry room and could see through their patio doors.) The best part? The guy is just sitting there watching TV. There's no chance in hell he can hear his it.

After a while of his harassing my ears I decided he doesn't get internet anymore. Two minutes later the music went off. It's been off for a good 20 minutes or so... so I'll turn it back on now.

Lets see if the music comes back on... *sigh*

i just hope there that stupid... otherwise your going to get in trouble once they make the connection because your the one whose made complaints... its kind of like.. 2 + 2 = 4...

I suggest the letter threatening to call the cops, make it anonymous, if that don't work, then I'd personally call the cops. Or you can continue to fuck around with they're internet until you get in trouble, your choice.

E: Also... I don't kno what normal person would have a light show going on in they're appartment like you described and listen to loud music and just sit they're, maybe hes using phsycadelic drugs lmao, in which case I'd def write the cop threat letter, that'll make them shut the fuck up lol.

It's almost 1 AM here...

I just went up and knocked on the door.

-no response

I pounded on the door.

-no response

I used the little knocker thingy on ze door.

-no response

I used my weight and both hands to slam into the door as hard as I can repeatedly

-a woman's voice says "Shit! Turn it down, the neighbors sound pissed!"

She opens the door, the room smells like smoke (cigarette) both of the guys that live up there smoke, they always open their patio door and stand out on the patio while they smoke, and let the "music" from their apartment flood out the open patio door into the world....

I know this because that patio door opens and closes about every.... it just opened.

She introduced herself as Jackie and apologized for the music. After a little small talk which was her pretty much trying to use her looks to make me not so upset (low cut shirt, big chest, cute face, about 5'2") which was just awkward... I just asked em to keep it down 'cause I wanna sleep.

Next time they think it's cool to play music stupid loud at 1 AM I'm calling the cops. I don't care about being a nice neighbor anymore.

now that you have established contact with the female, try to get her to get the other two assholes to the door and just ask them what the fuck their issue is.
on the flip side, you could set the router so that it only allows internet at certain times during the day. on my router i can set a schedule for when internet can happen and when it cant, so cut it out at like 11:30 so they cant get porn.
better yet, block access to porn sites.

Nah, haven't called the cops yet, I reported them to the apartment management a while back, but haven't gotten the cops in on it...

@donut

They don't have any shared drives... which made me think of the time my brother called me and told me that someone was on his wireless network.

I asked him if they had a shared printer. 'cause that's a lot more fun than a shared file. If they can come home to a printer with no ink, and a stack of fifty full page cockshots.... that's FAR better than playing with their files/loading their hard drives with porn.

They turned their music off around 9 today, so they're safe for now.

When I actually went to call the cops it was because my roommate and his girlfriend walked into my doorway and just looked at me... then looked up. So I was like "Fine... I'll call em..."

a good half hour later the cop shows up and I spoke with him about the guys upstaris.

The cop left and went upstaris... it took him a good minute or so until they heard his knocking. I hope he was upset when they opened the door.

They just started playing music again... cop left about 30-45 mins ago. I hope my roommate's girlfriend wakes up to go up there and yell at them.

My roommate and his girl have class at 5 AM... so for the guys upstaris to be douches like this... it just kinda fails.

Record this shit with your video camera and use it as evidence. Just introduce yourself, explain the situation, and walk around your apartment with the camera, recording how loud the sound is.

I live underneath a couple with a kid who loves to STOMP AROUND THE APARTMENT SCREAMING FOR NO REASON. It happens during the day and does stop before the "curfew" time, so I can't complain about it legally, but it drives me insane sometimes when I'm playing a game or working on something and keep hearing "THUD THUD THUD." I complained to my landlord, and they said that they need some proof. Unfortunately, I don't have a camcorder. I know you do.

This is far worse than that, though. If the shit starts late at night again, just call the fucking cops; hosting a rave party at 2AM in a fucking apartment building is against the law. Keep calling until they get arrested or evicted.

Disconnect their internet for tonight, I don't think they'll correlate it to the cop or the music. Someone inside their network is probably the last thing they'll expect, they'll probably blame the phone company or the apartment before they'll figure it out. Your roommate and his gf have to get up early tomorrow, they need SOME sleep.
When they're away sometime tomorrow, see if they have a shared printer. If they do, I say waste all their ink on something stupid, like horse porn.

I've spoken with Jason about it... and he gave me his phone number to be able to just call and ask em to shut up...

I've called him four times... the first time he wasn't home, he was at school... but he said that he'd call his roomie and tell him to keep it down. (didn't turn it down)

The second time it was to tell him that we have his ferret.

The third time He wasn't home, he was somewhere else that was very loud... again said he'd call his roommate (volume never went down)

Fourth time he again wasn't at home... and... well you see where this is going. The volume stayed loud.

My roommate and his girlfriend have knocked on their door twice to ask em to shut up, both times they spoke with different people (neither times did they speak to the girl.)

Last night they turned off their music at around 10 PM... the "sound kerfew" or whatever here is at 9 PM, I've told Jason that.. and my roommate came out of his room last night and looked at me like he wanted me to do something about the kids upstairs. (at around 9:30) Nine thirty is late when you have to be at school at five AM.

You should have just burst through their door at 3:00 AM with a loaded shotgun and a rusty saw, chloroformed them, drug them out, dumped them in your trunk and taken them out to the woods to mess with them.

Well in the past six months they did get a little better for a short while, but then became huge douches again. I ended up calling the cops on them several times and getting the cop to make an actual report out of it, and give me a copy of the case number so that I could give that number to the apartment office here.

I also complained to the office several times about them, then they started breaking stuff up there and my roof started leaking... (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=16065)

After complaining about that a few times and throwing in a few more noise/littering (throwing glass bottles off their balcony into the lawn in front of my patio, or just dropping glass bottles onto my patio leaving a nice pile of shattered glass there for me.) complaints along with handing them my list of police reports I was finally able to get rid of them.

You're not a bad person. Arteen (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17160) already has that title.

Also, congrats on the eviction of the unacceptable.
