now ATM, i'm working on a Sonic 2 hack and would like to post pictures and a few videos of it and then ultimately allow people to try it out. However since this is a dump of a legit Sega genesis cartiridge and therefore a ROM, i'm not sure if it'd be ok to even post pictures of it.
the point of the hack is to introduce new levels, features (hanging from cieling, etc...), and overall give the player a new experience playing the old Sonic 2.
My question is this: Am I able to post naything regarding this mod i'm working on (pictures, videos, etc..) or not?

As far as I realize, if you own Sonic 2 it is not illegal (given that you didn't circumvent copy protection and stuff).

Actually I recently heard that just because you own the game, doesn't mean its not illegal to have a ROM of it.
Might want to look into this, actually!

You are legally able to post pictures/video/info/etc as long as Sega doesn't get all butthurt about it and issue a Cease and Desist. People do this all the time; remember the MOTHER 3 translation hack (http://mother3.fobby.net/) I posted about a while ago?
However, you may NOT distribute the ROM freely. Even if any of us who download it have a Sonic 2 cartridge, you are still handing out Sega's copyrighted data without permission. When the time comes to distribute, use a patcher, like how Halo PC mods are handled.

I thought of the off topic place for artists, but its also a game so I considered "tech talk"
proper placement for this would be...
EDIT:
also, some of my earlier videos concerning the build are no longer accurate as the original build was lost and I've had to start from scratch. but yeah, where should I make the thread for the mod and info concerning it

Might want to look into this, actually!Yeah that depends on your jurisdiction. In NZ it was until just recently illegal to load music onto your iPod (as any possible method would require 2 copies... which is "illegal")
However in the States the shift key can be punishable with a 6-figure fine and 5 years in federal prison. There are just some things that a judge will never convict you of.

no one has answered my question yet, where should I make a topic to showcase the hack? It should be noted i'm still learning how to use ASM so this hack is a purely simple one till I master ASM, which will allow me to make a full blown hack/mod of Sonic 2

You can distribute, just use IPS patches (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/patchutil.html).

You can distribute, just use IPS patches (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/patchutil.html).or you can contact me, this way modacity is not involved nor can they be held acocuntable...but then again, this is Sonic Team, they have jurisdiction over this stuff, but yeah. i'll look into IPS patches, and if not i'll post my xfire tag in each demo video so you can contact me.
also, expect a topic about this hack today. screens and a video of Crimson Hill Zone (a pallete change and level re-design of Emerald hill zone)
--------------------------
Crimson Hill Zone-> Rush through a stretch of South Island that is famous for its crimson coloured grass. Robotnik has been through here, cutting down some of the palm trees and placing badniks as sentry units to slow you down.
Rusty factory (Chemical Plant Zone)-> Race through a run down factory to chase after robotnik, but be careful, some of the old pipes have broken and released some of its liquid contents, flooding areas closer to the factories heart.
??? ->
??? ->
Tree Top zone (Wood zone, level cut from final) -> robotnik has been here, the tricera bots and buzz bombers present here prove it. its easy to get lost in the tree tops, watch out for false paths and dead ends that will loop you back to the begining
Hidden Palace Zone (cut from final, found in S2 beta) -> Robotnik is down here mining gems to focus the energy systems used on the death egg, put a stop to him...tread lightly as these caves are flooded and in some cases Sonic will have to take a dip to get to the end
Mine Shaft zone (Mystic Cave zone) ->Robotnik has escaped the hidden palace and is fleeing through the mines that connect to the palace. watch for falling rocks and anomalies that can crush sonic...you're getting closer
HillTop zone -> These mountains tower over South Island, the orbinauts and drill badniks are signs that robotnik is mining the thermal energy from the valcano's lava to power his factories.
NOTE: Hilltop zone will have only ONE act, Act 2 will be cut
