Powercolor ATi Radeon X1600PRO 256MB DDR2 PCI-E. ATi 2006-Present.

I had two Sapphire Atomic Radeon HD 3870s in CrossFire but I sold them early last year to make room for the forthcoming HD 4850, but I ended up never buying one and I siphoned my old Radeon X1600 series from my old PC for this one. The X1600PRO runs very well even with some of the latest games. I don't know what it is but it rips Fallout 3 apart and Lord of the Rings Online looks great with most settings set to mixed and carefulyl optimized High/Very High/Ultra High. Crysis/Warhead run great on mixed Low/Med/High settings.

I think it was released in early 2006. I used to have the 7600 GT ;) Still competent today, can (sorta) run Crysis if you don't mind it looking like a very un-advanced game (doesn't look like crap but you miss out on the high-tech experience).

I think I figured out recently that if I increased my RAM to 1 GB or got a new Vid card, I could have higher RAM or better vid card. I maybe able to run more games on my computer yet. I'd have to remove a lot though to install a good one. That would include Portal, HCE, and Age of Empires 2. :gonk:

Not always true, the Intel X3100 has horrendous DX8 performance on older games from what I hear. Your Radeon 9250 will run Doom 3 better than the X3100, along with Source engine games, provided they're set to SM1.1 or 1.4. Also, the X3100 doesn't use dedicated memory - a fatal mistake.

Have a 4850 right now on single. At first the drivers kept crashing but at this point it's not so bad any longer. ATi has come a long way since December.

Either way I find waiting a year or two to buy a new card and put it into SLi/Crossfire useless because by then new cards are out which are faster, stronger, and generate less heat.

Why did I say that you ask? because I was contemplating getting a new 7900 for SLi instead of a new card. the new card won out. :D

Well, the 4800 series one is not entirely accurate, since the 4870 and 4890 compete with the GTX 260 Core 216 and GTX275, not the GeForce 9800 series (GTS250 and GTS240).

Either way, it looks like Nvidia's new GT300 series going to be a pretty major upgrade, starting with 512 shader processors.

HD5870 will have 2000 stream processors, 512-bit GDDR5 memory, and a core exceeding 1GHz; HD5000 vs. GTx300 will be an interesting showdown indeed.

The radeon 5000 series is suppose to come out first though, with a mid-summer release date while the GT300 series is going to somewhere in October. I hope ATi pulls something worth waiting another 2 months for, the thought of playing games on my X1300 PRO makes me cringe.

Actually it will only have 1000 stream procs. Everything else you said is right on the dot.

Somewhere near the end of July to be slightly more exact.

I would definately like to see these cards go head-to-head with Crysis on Performance.

Yeah, misinterpretation on my part...they screwed with the naming scheme in all the blogs. They are calling R870 the dual-chip graphics card, when in fact it simply denotes an HD5870 core, Ã* la HD4870.

Yeah, cards are getting pretty long these days. I really marveled at the length of my HD4850 when I got it through the post :O

One is two slot the other isnt.
It was big enough of a difference to make the GTS hit the backend of the hard drive, the otherside of the base.

Warsaw

Ah, well I was concerned with length, I knew about the slot difference. Should've been more specific. If I am building a desktop PC, I fully expect to be using a dual-slot card.

Just bought a sapphire radeon 4770, I'll see how this turns out. Would this count as ATI 2006-present?

You're not struggling if you're not trying. And trying is having at least a low-end video card.

Hmm, I was wondering about that. Anyways, unless your laptop can switch out those very limited PCI-E graphics cards, DON'T POST IN THIS THREAD ABOUT YOUR LAPTOP SUCKING. A better idea would be to add a note saying that you're using a laptop.
