Sup, well here in the UK Chinese food means big bucks, or at least that what they must make as they are so popular.
Was curious, if you get a Chinese takeaway, what do you order?
Just rang up our local, 40 minutes :gonk:
My usual, is large egg fried rice and large chicken chow mein, totalling £5.90 ($8.70)
My housemate always has special fried and chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce.
Cant wait,

Despite being Chinese, I don't really eat Chinese food at home. It's just rice, some quickly-cooked meat and vegetables, more like "generic Asian food" than actual Chinese food.
Hope you enjoy your meal. I love Peking duck and black pepper crab.

Do you ever order in Chinese food though? Like I still order in English food :) Fish n Chips :O

No, from time to time (maybe once every 2 weeks) my family goes out to an actual Chinese restaurant, no shortage of those in Vancouver.

Well that sorta counts :)
My and my friends sometimes go to a really nice Chinese restaurant in town. Usually in Chinese restaurants in UK, you hardly see Chinese people actually eating there. However the one we go to, we end up being the only English people. Makes us feel really out of place and we get worried we may do something to insult them. They all use chopsticks and we of course cant use them for our lifes, could they see this as an insult?

The 2 Panda Express places we have are both horrid and gross. Thank god we have a local family-run restaurant nearby.
Wonton soup and sesame chicken ftw

I used to eat at this place called Peking Wok. Used to be pretty awesome, but now the food tastes like reheated leftovers. I just go to Panda Express now and get chow mein and orange chicken.

I just get an order of sesame chicken.
Oh, and our Chinese place, when you place an order, it always takes them 10 minutes to cook the food. No matter how much, or how little. It's always ten minutes.

Not really an insult. Anyway chopsticks aren't that hard to use, trust me. I taught myself how to use them. Don't worry, asking for a fork and spoon isn't regarded as an insult, although the waiter might laugh at you. As for why there aren't many Chinese people in U.K. Chinese restaurants, it's because most overseas Chinese people (from both the PRC and Taiwan) don't see the U.K. as an ideal destination, they usually move to Canada, America, Singapore (most Chinese non-Chinese place lol), Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia. I'd like to go to Britain one day, having lived in three countries that have significant British roots.

One of the Publix's in my town (if you live in Florida, you know what I mean, being the hometown we've got 9 different Publix's within 30 minutes...) has an Asian kitchen added onto it's deli, since it's got a full sit down dining area. They have this General Lee chicken (is like an orange chicken) that is incredibly delcious, that with some of their fried rice, mmmm. It's cheap too, about $6 bucks gets you enough food to stuff you twice.

My aunt used to work at a Publix in Coral Springs. She gave us some Publix clips before we header back here to the old igloo.

lol not really, there's no shortage of them in either of our respective cities due to sizable Asian-immigrant populations in Vancouver and Toronto. But the whole of Vancouver Island has fewer Chinese restaurants (or any Asian restaurants) than Richmond itself (southern district in Greater Vancouver area). In Japan, there are damned few Chinese restaurants there just as there are damned few Japanese restaurants in China (not Taiwan or the SAR areas), 1940s history might be to blame for it, kinda silly though.
Peking duck and black pepper crab pwn those chow mein and orange chicken and whatever. My family eats that stuff at restaurants on occasions like birthdays or when my sister comes back home from university during break.

So Buckshot, did you ever use a Chinese keyboard? If so, was it really hard to use?
Mr Buckshot
February 7th, 2009, 04:43 PM
Nope, never used a Chinese keyboard. Most people I've seen in China/Taiwan use standard QWERTYs, a fact reflected in the rising number of English-speakers there (more public schools are starting to offer English class). There are tiny Chinese characters next to the English letters but they don't really have that much use.
If I'm typing in Chinese, I press Alt-Shift to switch into Chinese, then I type in "pinyin" (transliterations) and select a corresponding character.

Not exactly, just the alphabet and some basic pronunciation so that they can type pinyin transliterations when typing in Chinese.
Beef with Broccoli? That reminds me of this asian joke where a newlywed couple is preparing to "get it on" and they're both virgins. The groom is a restaurant owner. He asks his wife what she wants to do in bed, she's scared and just asks for a 69, the groom is confused and says "You want beef with broccoli?"

I've never been to Panda Express 0_O But given that it's a chain, I don't really have high expectations.
That reminds me, I like Western food too (esp bbq ribs and steak) but I've almost never eaten at Western places in Vancouver, BC, Canada because most Western restaurants here are a bit overpriced. I eat far more western food in America than in Canada because western restaurants in America (especially buffets like Fresh Choice) tend to give better value for the money than in Canada, even if they're still more expensive on average than Asian restaurants.
Of course Syuusuke, most cuisines have both healthy and unhealthy variants...obviously eating Chinese fried rice, black bean dessert and so on every day is about as bad as eating McDonalds every day.
edit: Just wiki'ed Panda Express, looks generic to me. I think I might have seen one in Silicon Valley back then but I never went in before. They don't operate in Canada anyway. Maybe I'll try Panda Express when I transfer back to USA for university.

For dim sum, I wubs me some jai chung (chung fun w/ fried dough - don't know the actual spelling, loal) and some lai wong bao.
For dinner, usually some friend noodles w/ chicken and jiu ying dou fu (awesome spicy, deep fried tofu) and maybe some lemon chicken and of course bat choi.

i dont mind them tbh, just as soon as they immigrate into and except australian culture.
i aint asking for ya to start wearing short shorts, thongs, use useless abbreviations while cooking snags on the barbie in a pair of thongs, i'm saying that if you dont like the country and rag on it then you should get the fuck out of it.
because i'll gladly have a bigger house with a bigger yard and you can go back to your shoebox's.

if you see the things i see when people of ALL race's come to australia you'd understand.
these people actively spit and tread on australian culture and winge and moan about how much it sucks here and how much better it is in their "home" (lol most of them where born in australia and have no experience in their "home country) is.
1st generation australians are the worst, adult immigrants tend to be better, but 99% of the time they're just a bunch of rude arrogant dickwads that insult you in other languages and play dumb as if they dont understand english when it's suits them.
Asians and the Lebanese are the worst.
I like people having their own culture because it means diversity, different perspectives, foods and mannerism's but what i cant fucking stand is these people moving here and then insulting the people that welcomed them here and insulting and disrespecting the very country they stand upon.
The cities are the worst but in the country it's great because there isn't massive amounts of other people like them they actively get involved in the community and are welcomed because of it. Hell i love meeting overseas people.
and on a side note i'm actually moving into a group house that has a fella from Korea in it who has only been in australia for less then 2 months.
(he's from Seoul, you know the starcraft capital and the pinnacle of competitive gaming) and i'd love to learn more from him and discuss it, i already have to a certain extent.
Racist? dont make me laugh buckshot.
It's dickheads i cant stand.
and australia is known for a country with "backyards" and theres a billion chinese people buckshot in an area the same size as australia.
you do the math.
the more that move here the smaller the block of lands become and the more the australian people suffer for it. i want to have a backyard, but in 30 years that doesnt look like it's going to be a possibility.

There aren't any chain-style Asian restaurants in Vancouver, all of them are single independent businesses. Well Fortune restaurant (Chinese) has three locations in BC and that's about it, doesn't really qualify as a chain like Panda Express. Despite the economy, many of these single restaurants still have good business, probably because they did not try to raise their already-fair prices.

Oh I see. Yeah takeout joints are usually not representative of the culture. Same thing with this Japanese takeout place called Yoshinoya or something. We don't have such crap in Vancouver (heck fast food isn't popular, we don't get 99-cent menus even in McDs) but there are plenty of competitively priced authentic Chinese/Korean/Japanese/Thai/Vietnamese/Indian places here. We need more Mexican restaurants though >.< had plenty of those back in CA.
I took a look at Panda Express menus, that's a bit more accurate of what Chinese food really is like, at least it's more accurate than Yoshinoya is about Japanese food.
