View Full Version : [STEAM] Is it just me, or is Steam terrible?

I'm not talking about a nice, integrated shell, reduced piracy rates, or any of the other great things Steam has done. I'm talking about it just fucking working.
Every SINGLE person I know who has used Steam has had SIGNIFICANT problems with it at one point or another. It is also ridiculously easy to crash it. Granted, I won't stop using it any time soon, but yeah. From my mid-range comp, to the 8-ish ultra-spanking-new-run-crysis-all-max comps in my game design class, to my buddies computers, all varying from XP to Vista, to low-med range to high, Steam fucks up at least once a week. Is everyone who comes in contact with me just cursed with Steam? Or is it hard to get a program to run reliably on such a large range of computers (if any)?

Same with Snaf and ultama, I haven't experienced any significant problems.

When CSS was REALLY popular "back then", I had all kinds of issues with Steam. I started using it again when TF2 came out, and now for DoWII as well, and haven't had any issues with it.
I still hate it from all the issues back in the day though.

I've never had a problem either, unless you count my account being hijacked and not doing the anything about it.

The only problem I had is that loooooooong ass login to my steam account.
and L4D not loading properly, but thats easily fixed by going directly to its directory.

The only problem I've ever had with Steam is that one day, for about 2 hours, the game was stuck at "Update, 23%". That's it.

Only thing I dislike about steam and it's games is it takes ages to join a server, even if you have all the DLC that the servers running.

If you're talking about Source games, the only time it takes a year and a half is when you've just started the game, and if you've got a slow computer. When I swapped my Smelleron for my P4, I joined HL2DM and CSS servers superquick.
The only problem I have with Steam at the moment is every now and then, hl2.exe and GameOverlayUI.exe persist after I quit a game, and if I leave it be or try to run another game afterwards, Steam crashes and I need to reload it. vOv

Yeah source games, it's always been like that for me and 2 other friends. Haven't met anyone that gets connected in less than 5 seconds.

Once the game gets rolling and I've been through a server's mapcycle, TF2 rejoins servers damn quick.

What I absolutely despise about Steam is that one day you'll have all your desired games installed and ready to play, and the next day most of them don't work. :(

Ive never had an issue with Steam, ever (except Offline mode not working, but that's because games were out of date). I've even moved my Steam folder to other computers in the house, and used it on my computer after a reformat, works just as well no matter what. :awesome:

Never have a problem with steam except for that last autoupdate which messed up Opposing Force (you know, it crashes when you open the door into the teleport chamber). That reminds me, I should log into Steam again and see if the next autoupdate fixed anything...
The only thing I actually dislike about Steam is that if my account ever falls victim to hacking, I basically lose all the games I've paid for unless I can win a fight with Steam customer support. Other than that, I'm ok so far.

Gmod always takes forever to join servers if you need to download shit.
Also, OP, Steam hating is ooooold.
Gb2 when HL2 first came out, then it would be cool to hate Steam.
These days it works like a charm.
