I have had vista for a while now , and have been using max 9 for most stuff , but when i decided to re install max 8 every time i start the damn thing , it simply rejects it and freezes.

The process goes something like this ...

1: Start 3ds 8
2: Loads 3ds 8
3: Go to do something ...
4: Freezes ...
5: Not responding ... closes ..

I have searched google and had no results that have helped , i was wondering if anyone here had the same experiance and knew how to fix it?

Yeah, 3ds Max 8 and Vista do not like each other. I had the same problems back when I installed Max 8 on Vista. As far as I know, there is no fix to make Max 8 work better, so you will need to go back to using Max 9.

No.

3ds max 8 has issues with Vista Aero. Goto compatibility settings in the max 8 shortcut and set it to XP, along with hitting the bottom 3 check boxes in the group of 5, and the run as administrator checkbox too. One of those first 3 disables Aero when that program is running, and that should fix your problem.

One of those first 3 disables Aero when that program is running,
It's the "Disable Desktop Composition".

checked all of the boxes i was told to , and set compatability to XP SP2 , but it still does it , specifically i go to import to import the reference model of the chief , and it just shuts down and stops responding , the ks in task manager instantly go 140.000k and then thats it , i have to close it down.

I use 3ds Max 8 and Vista, never gave me any trouble, except for the fact it likes to die on me when I do some things. It's even preventing from viewing the modify list of my level. It just crashed on me when I pressed the button. But I guess it would have done that on my old XP machine as well.

There are 3 service packs for 3ds Max 8. Have you tried installing any of them to see if it solves the problem?

No idea, but the problem you are describing is the exact same as the typical vista aero 3ds max incompatibility issue. 3DS max 8 works on vista and W7 on each of the several computers I've ran it on.

Is the theme changing to Windows Vista Basic when you open 3ds?

Get the latest service pack for 3DS, if you haven't already. Max will not run at all without it on my setup.

I had the same problem when I first installed it on vista. I did the same thing yuki said to do. it works, but it likes to crash on me when I use it for too long.

I have had it happen to me on 3 different computers, as well as quite a few friends of mine. So for a lot of people, there is a problem with Max 8 and Vista. It's easier to just install a newer version, and not have to worry about the crashing issue at all.

Sounds familiar, don't know what caused it or how i fixed it. I know i tried different graphics modes, from D3D to OpenGL and back again, disabled services like themes, or maybe some file(s) were updated after an install of another program.
