Exposure to UV light creates reactive spots on sections of the chitosan molecules which then combine with the broken oxetane rings to form new chemical cross links that close up the damage. The process appears to begin at the bottom of a scratch, pulling it closed like a zipper.

I hope this actually gets used by a manufacturer, unlike some of the innovative technology we have.

If they could combine that with the metal that increases its density on impact site then you would have an extremely versatile material.

There is another material like this that reacts instantly when it touches warmer temperatures. There was a video about it I saw in school when a guy hit a sheet of this material with a hammer and then poured hot water on it and it repaired its self instantly.
