I've seen worse come from here, though that most likely immigrated from 4chan or SA.

Oh my.

The kid's iPod caught on fire and burnt him and his pants, and melted his underwear. Imagine if it was in public, not to mention if I was him I'd probably never want to put an iPod in my pocket ever again. Let's not forget if it was a little closer to his crotch there could have been serious damage. Hopefully this will hurt Apple's publicity/image.

I would just go for a couple thousand and free apple products for life.

Why would you give the melting ipod time to meld through your pocket and through your underwear. Let alone allowing it to melt your skin.

Looks like mommy wants to strike it rich with junior's little accident. I fucking hate frivolous lawsuits; excessive sums of cash for "punitive" or "emotional" damage is bullshit, except in cases where someone gets disabled, can't work, and will lose income needed to live.

e: Unless a skin graft for his leg costs over $140,000, I think the amount is a load of shit. Not as frivolous as some other I've seen, but still.

Hopefully this will hurt Apple's publicity/image.Why should it? You know, you run the risk of shit like this happening daily with any electronic device that uses a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. While failure rates are low, nothing and nobody is perfect, and every now and then something like this will happen.

While we've seen a couple burnt charging cables of late, this is the first we've heard of an iPod touch "popping," and it's especially odd because the lawsuit claims the iPod was turned off at the time of the incident.I don't see why it's odd, since it uses soft power. It's not like turning if off physically disconnects the battery.

I'm going to guess that the kid improperly charged the itouch. Dry chem batteries are volatile and explosive. Your own fucking fault if you charge it wrong and hurt yourself.

Yes because naturally goons are on par with 4channers nevermind the fact that when some of my 4channer friends (ugh) looked at a photoshop phriday once they didn't get half of them because the humour was too high-brow for them

4channers are limited almost entirely to toilet humour or meme offshoots, goons are generally excessively sarcastic. Big difference.

Also, with PB and Snaf on this. Shit happens, it's not Apple's fault that chemicals used in rechargeables can violently react. I'm sure there would have been a disclaimer somewhere warning of the possibility, but like virtually all people (myself included, if I'm honest), they completely overlooked it.

This. Every single battery-powered device has a warning about charging improperly, using off-brand chargers, or modifying the battery, among other things.

Most likely, the kid put his ipod into the wrong charger.

I'm not going to pass judgement over whether or not he was justified in demanding legal action--cba to read the article, and it's most likely not got the whole story.

I do suspect it was his fault, and Apple's army of lawyers would crush him if he tried to sue.

Also, according to the lawsuit, "He continues to suffer from both physical and mental conditions which will cause him to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of his life." Poor kid! In addition to Apple, the lawsuit seemingly randomly names 10 Apple retail employees, and wants $150,000+ and attorney fees in damages.
I think most of the quote is utter BS. I can see having problems with second degree burns and the fact that it may have exploded in your pocket, but being mentally scared for life because of it is retarded. Also the fact she named 10 "random" retail employees makes the lawsuit seem like all she wants is a nice monitary birthday present.

Honestly, unless this happened almost instantly, why didn't he just take his pants OFF... So what if it was in public? Humiliation < Physical Injury. However, if it did just instantly combust then I guess the kid was just SOL.

You're fault for taking the risk of going up on a roof. Anything like that could have happened.

On the other hand if you put an iPod in your pocket you don't expect it to blow up, you don't think putting an iPod in your pocket would be risky.

YOU were standing on that shingle, and YOU decided to remove the kiddle pool. It was YOUR fault. It's not like it's the shingles fault! How could it be? It's an inanimate object that was weakened by a HURRICANE. Gosh.

Really though, what Xet said.

I once had a flashlight app for my iPod Touch that froze. I thought nothing of it so I put my iTouch in my pocket hoping that it would unfreeze itself. An hour later, I remember it is in my pocket and tried to pull it out. Even in a plastic case, the thing burned my hand (I guess I put it in a thick pocket if I didn't feel that on my leg).

With a longer battery life on the iPod Touch 2G and maybe a cheap case, I can see this possibly happening, even though I highly doubt that the iPod was off, and I am suprised that he wouldn't notice the fact that his iPod was burning up before it melted.

Edit: It was a jailbroken iTouch with a non-appstore flashlight app, so if my iTouch had melted, it would have been my fault for having an uncertified app on my modded iTouch. Fucking kid will lose the lawsuit.

Isn't putting anything in your pocket risky?
Its not Apple's fault he even put it in his pocket.
When I climbed up I took that risk.
He did too when he put it in his pocket.
Its his own damn problem.
