Im surprised, no one made a thread about this.. at least from what I seen.

Anyways, ill quote what rooster said on halo maps:

This tool is essentialy the key to enabling all games to be played on one platform. Unfortunatly this only works for PC titles (hopefully they'll upen it up a bit.). However, thats a good thing. Because if OnLive is a success, and only does PC titles (also, oOnLive is gonna be cheaper than a Wii), the consoles will become obsolete! Thus developers will start making games only for the PC, and all xbox 360 and ps3 games will be ported over to the OnLive network! (Wii might survive). Microsoft will quite gaming (it should) and sony will go back to making headphones. rofl
Basicaly, you buy the game online, and to play it, it accesses a local server that plays the game based on your commands, and resends you live feed of your gameplay. Thus, you can have the crappyest laptop ever, you can still play Crysis as long as you have a decent enternet connection. This also solves the LAG issues on multiplayer because the onlything going back to users are video and command. Everything is taken care of by servers. AMAZING!!!

IMO, I think this will lag as hell, and wont be as good as having it on my own comp, but that's just me.

I agree, even though most people will be able to use this without connection problems, there is the fact that there will probably be a 30+ms lag time, which most hardcore gamers would be incredibly upset with, but who knows, amirite?

Tell me, how do you expect to get this 720p video stream down my pipe? Or even a 480i for that matter? Even if you get it down to 100ms latency (which happens to be a damn good ping latency), that's still a lot of visual lag. The only thing the article I read said about it was that it was "smooth". Well, that means jack shit if it's coming back 100ms later than my input.

Honestly, I'm skeptical. This will never work with the current system.

Cortexian
March 24th, 2009, 03:09 PM
No, it won't be as good as playing on your own PC if you're talking about quality or customization. They state that the maximum resolution is 720p at 60Hz, a PC can go WAY beyond that already. And I doubt you'll be able to do any kind of modding because the game is run on the server. It sounds like a very interesting idea though, basically it's like a TV broadcast of the game you're playing, except all of the control section of the game is rerouted to your controller or mouse/keyboard. I don't see why it wouldn't work, watching "Live" news usually only has a 30-100ms delay.

InnerGoat

30ms delay would be so bad, let alone 100ms...

Your inputs take 30ms to get there, a few ms on the server farm, and 30 ms back to get the video to you. That's assuming your ping doesn't shoot up from the bandwidth being used, droped packets and other crap you see playing games already.

I dunno, maybe it's magical?

Apparently, according to Kotaku, the response time between key push to actually seeing a response on your screen is less then a millisecond.

What about lag, you say? OnLive's technology "incubator" Rearden Studios claims that its servers will deliver video feeds that have a ping of less than one millisecond. Its patented video compression technique is also advertised as blazing fast, with video compression taking about one millisecond to process.

It is if you have an FTL communications system hardwired into the console.

Sure it'll be playable if the server cluster is a few blocks away, or even on the same local network which could be the case in that test. ;)

Yup. It's called renting.

Sure it'll be playable if the server cluster is a few blocks away, or even on the same local network which could be the case in that test. ;)And that's going to suck big time if they don't plan on going international with their server clusters. I'm not getting my hopes up for this thing, just have to wait and see what this really has to offer later on when the external beta comes about.

The one thing I do want to know, is if we already have the games installed on our PC's because we have already bought them from stores or what not, can we still play them on this service? If it turns out that this OnLive service really is all it's cracked up to be, I'd really enjoy playing Crysis with Ultra High settings instead of Medium-Low settings.

Saw this over at 2f2f. It's not going to work, 1.5mb/s for the low res, and 5mb/s for the high res. That's a fucktonne of bandwidth and there's no way this is showing it's face in the next 10 years.

Ha, they are pretty ambitious people.

Considering I get huge lag on Halo, which is like a 7 year old game, the lag I recieve is not visual lag, its not because my computer is craptastic. Its because of the network connections.

To be it is a novel idea that will not work. In a country such as Japan or China, where the internet speeds are insanely fast I can see it working. However North America and Europe I have huge doubts over.

Internet speeds need to dramatically increase for this to be viable.

I just dont see how its going to be lag free on a multiplayer game with the other opponents NOT using the onLive service.

I actually have great belief in this, but, as normal things do, it costs money, so it's an automatic "not-for-me" kind of thing, but if they manage to get it to work with no more than 30 ms of delay, that'd be an awesome proof of concept.

Think of it this way.

How long is it before the bandwidth costs are higher than it would have been to build your own pc.

I already have a quick internet connection, so I wouldn't have to worry about bandwidth costs.

I'd love to be in the beta, so that I can play the games on a low server load. It's when this service goes public that worries me. I doubt the servers will be able to offer quick rendering when there are possibly hundreds of thousands of people playing at the same time. The servers will slow down when OnLive gets more popular.

This won't last long.

I was actually talking with my friend about this today, and we both have not-so-great thoughts about how it will turn out. We basically talked about everything that you guys have mentioned here, and we came up with one conclusion : this will never work.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/gdc-09-onlive-bosses-talk-bandwidth-caps/

As an example, at the 5 Mbps OnLive requires for HD gaming, a Comcast user capped at 250 GB monthly could expect to get around 3.8 hours per day of game time -- assuming they used their connection for nothing else.

The internet is about as fast as it can get latency-wise, even simply pinging a server has latency. The latency is completely limited by the speed of light, which is the fastest possible kind of..anything. You would have to have a direct, light speed connection to the server (a stand alone optical cable) and be within 93 miles of it to have under 1ms of lag. In reality you'll be hundreds of miles away, the signal will travel mostly via electricity (slower than light) and latency will be added every single time it travels through a switch, hub, router or server (lots of these!). Then the end server has to render the frame, compress it, send it back and then your PC has to decompress it. The lag will be massive and there's very little they can do about it, the majority of it is completely outside of their control.

Pretty good, considering that I'm paying for 5mb/s. My upload sucks though.

But back on topic, I do actually hope that this never comes to be. It will be too hyped, too many devs will tag along, and in the end it will just be a waste of time and manpower that could have been spent better somewhere else.

Edit: I need a new ISP though. I want to be able to run a server or two out of my basement, but my current ISP isn't fast enough for that.

I would be rather saddened if OnLive turned out to be a success. My RAM's arriving next week. I'm getting my first decent graphics card and first decent CPU within a month or two. I'd be pissed right off if all of that was for nothing.

You will still need a powerful computer for things other then gaming IF OnLive is a success. Background processes will still be going on in the, well, background, and applications will get more powerful.

When it involves an online service that will be streaming Hi-Def video through the internet to our computers, and also send inputs from our PC to the server in question, I do think that internet speeds do matter.
