It's been a couple of weeks since we posted, so we thought it'd be good to do some housekeeping. The next class pack will focus on the Sniper. It's actually shaping up to be the largest TF2 update yet, with multiple new maps and a bunch of gameplay tweaks. In addition, we've got another update in the works that should be done before the Sniper, and that one will include some new content for all classes.

The XBox 360 update is still being worked on. If you're wondering what's taking so long, since the content is "done" on the PC already, it's mostly been around fitting it all onto the XBox. The original version of TF2 in the Orange Box was very close to the XBox's memory limit, and all the additional TF2 content we've produced has pushed well beyond it. We've found a couple of nifty ways to get back a bunch of that memory, but it's turned out to be a lot of work, and that's what most of our time is being spent on. In the meantime, we're going to get a code update out to address the server cheating that's going on.

Like many other folks online, the TF2 team has been loving the Top 10 TF2 Plays of the Week videos that Push Gaming has been doing. If you haven't seen them yet, you can catch week 1 (http://www.wegame.com/watch/TF2_Top_Ten_1/), and week 2 (http://www.wegame.com/watch/TF2_Top10_Plays_of_the_Week_2/). We're hoping for a third one soon, but we can't really complain. If we were doing them ourselves, you'd probably see the third one sometime next year. Awesome!

I love the sniper, headshots are pretty easy in tf2 since most targets aren't fast moving, and some, like the heavy, may stay still.

I had a game on goldrush yesterday where my team had like 5-6 snipers (including myself) and we absolutely raped anything that moved and held them at the first section. I wasn't worried about this before, but after that I realized that if snipers are out in force, a few key areas are going to be absolutely impassible on a whole variety of maps. Even if the snipers can't shoot for shit, three or more can body shot you into oblivion over and over, particularly if a pyro protects them from spies.

We shall see how this goes.

I hate snipers, its makes it so I can't focus on raping medics as scout. I wish the scout update didn't suck as much. None of the weapons are ones I prefer to the others unless I'm on an orange map in which I use FaN to screw with snipers. Sandman is meh in current state and I dislike how its works, removing control from players is lame. Bonk isn't worth the lose of the pistol. Why couldn't bonk make you run faster instead.
Sniper is much more fun to play as now that hit boxes have been fixed though. Headshots that are 6 inches to teh side don't hit as often now, its more challenging.

How is FaN pro? I can't rape heavies with only 2 shoots. Its good for taking out things demo and below but still. In a scout v scout match the one with scatter gun will usually win. But it really doesn't matter because a good scout can take on any other class in a quick hit and run. Nothing more satisfying then coming up to a spin up heavy and dancing around him while filling him with lead. Scout does a better job at staraegic takeouts then spy does usually.

The spy does strategic takeouts, but lives to do it again faster then the scout could if he died (he would if the enemy team had 20 IQ points between them) and had to respawn.

And he pisses people the fuck off. :smugoff:

I take back what I said about the FaN, it in arena near the bridge is awesome. You need to be alot more strategic with your shot, but if you do it right it works wonders. Its fun to break an uber with it, just like airblasting.

As for the spy part, I still find is easier more fun to sneak behind the enemy as scout and take them out then spy, just because I like to be the distractor for friendly spies.

Soldiers are a bit more touchy to get with FaN though, need either the jump on them or some solid pistol hits on them.

When is valve going to give the FaN its own kill icon already, -_-.

The Sniper has been a tricky class to update. In particular, designing an alternative to the Sniper Rifle has been a challenge. To understand why, we need to go back, way back, into the mists of time, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and we started working on TF2. In our multiplayer FPS games, players tend to die a lot. Death is one of the great feedback mechanisms we have in the game, helping you evaluate your own skill versus that of your opponents, and the viability of the tactics being employed by each of you. Being hopeless optimists, we'd like your deaths to be positive experiences. When we started working on TF2, 22 years ago, we decided to examine the things that affected how players felt about their deaths in TFC. Our starting theory was that, for death to be a positive experience, players had to feel like they could have avoided dying if they'd done something different. We found two factors that seemed to be important in light of that theory:




The first was whether or not you understand what killed you. If you don't know what killed you, that death is failing in providing you the feedback it's supposed to, and you won't be able to figure out what you could have done differently. Unsurprisingly, we saw that these deaths were highly aggravating to players, and in sufficient number caused new players to stop playing entirely. Trying to reduce the number of these deaths in TF2 was done through a variety of changes. It was one of the reasons why we chose to remove the hand-held grenades that each class had in TFC, which were one of the primary causes of these deaths. It was one of several goals that led to the creation of the freezecam.
The second was whether you felt you were actually engaged with the person who killed you. Dying to someone you weren't engaged with, especially when you were already engaged with someone else, was aggravating. Even worse was dying to someone who you couldn't have engaged with, even if you chose to. In that case, you're very unlikely to believe you could have done anything differently to survive.

In particular, the second seemed to be the root cause of the hatred of Snipers. You're often killed by them while you're engaged with an enemy in the foreground, and most of the time the Sniper is so far away it feels like you couldn't have dealt with him even if you didn't have enemies nearby. In fact, the Sniper's goal is to create that relationship: he specifically wants to fight enemies outside their engagement range, because that's his primary advantage.

Which brings us back to the Sniper Rifle unlockable. In an effort to reduce some of the aggravation that other players feel towards the Sniper, we chose the goal of designing an unlockable that encouraged the Sniper to get a little closer to his target. We want him to give up some of his primary advantage in return for something else, so that enemies he kills feel like they were engaged with them, and feel like they could have survived if they'd just managed to fight a little better.
This better not turn into a twitch aiming I-win gun like the snipers in halo or railguns (I think it's raleguns) in Quake.

Though atleast it'd mean those pansys had to stick their fucking necks on the line for once.

That's something crytek desperately needed to learn with their crysis multiplayer. Claymores are not fun to die by, since they're about the size of my hand, and can be hidden in all sorts of level geometry where no one would be able to see them.

I made a thread a while back about them on mycrysis and almost every response was an obviously well thought out objection of, "no you're just bad at the game", and my personal favourite, "It's a war game, not the kind of game you should be finding fun in.". Just add much worse grammar, and the maturity of the halo 3 xbl community and you can put whatever else is unclear together yourself.

So, why are they updating the Sniper NOW if the alternatives are a total bitch to figure out? The whole point of the Sniper is to fall back and provide cover fire to your teammates, and take out key enemies from beyond their effective range, regardless of how pussyfied it is. Removing the sniper rifle for pretty much anything makes the Sniper not a Sniper anymore.

And yeah, if the weapon the Sniper gets turns him into a quickscoping/noscoping motherfucker I don't think I'd be able to play anymore.

The crying is justified. It's fucking annoying to be locked in combat and have some pussy hiding across the map suddenly end it for you. Which also seems to be one of the major gripes with demomen, too. If you go most of the game getting killed by a mobile sniper or a team of them, then you'd probably get pissed off too.

At least TF2 has a freezecam to show you where they hide.

I don't consider that a justification. I consider that complaining about strategic warfare because YOU were not expecting it. I personally fail to see any entertainment in fighting a game purely with short/mid range weaponry.

Getting pissed at a sniper who joins a firefight half-way in and just effortlessly pops everyone is understandable. Getting pissed at a sniper that you KNOW the location of, and either stupidly run straight at or repeatedly walk into the line of fire of, is not.

I'm not lobbying for any "nerf the sniper" rally or anything, I'm just saying that if you're repeatedly getting the upper hand on someone while you're sniping and they start complaining, think twice about taunting them about it. If you were in their shoes, you'd probably be miffed as well.

Granted, I assume you're talking about the artillery strikes I mentioned, but that was just a generality.

E2: I know how butthurt people can get over snipers. Playing as a sniper in BF2 I've had tanks and helicopters sent out to find me, an artillery barrage or two to try and take me out, whole squads of snipers hunt me down, and when that fails, I get banned because I am efficient, game changing, demoralizing, hidden sniper. 26:0 k/d ratio as a sniper. pwn.

Of course. I help capture flags, defend flags, and snipe from different locations, call out targets, and provide covering fire. They started shelling like crazy when I kept them out of the jets and helo's though. They didn't appreciate that very much.

True, spies are also a good way to take them down, but spies exist only in TF afaik, so that wouldn't work for other games.

Bringing up the subject of boredom with using a sniper, it really just comes down to how you utilize him. Depending on the game, sniper can be one of the most exciting classes to use, because you can really create some major carnage with a few well-placed shots. A good example of this is in Unreal Tournament games. If you use that sniper rifle correctly, you can provide major aid to your teammates when it comes to capturing/defending an objective.

I've barely played the sniper, though I admit it's pretty fun to kill someone from across the map before they even know you're there.

I'm an Engie by trade, and one thing I CAN'T FUCKING STAND is when a Sniper manages to wipe out mah Sentry defending the last CP on Dustbowl without me realizing where the fuck those shots damaging mah Sentry are coming from.

Also, Demoman is good for pissing off other Engies. On 2fort one time, an Engie kept building Sentries/whatnot underwater, so I switched to Demoman, blew up his Sentry with stickybombs, killed him with a sitckybomb, then layed a Stickybomb trap that fucking murdered his ass every time he tried to use the sewers to sneak out and set up another fucking underwater level 3 Sentry.

Stickybombs are fun.

Based on the mechanics, I would imagine that it's essentially a nerfed HL2 crossbow. Less instant kill and probably half as much kickback.

Because killing substantial portions of the enemy team and sniping off key members of said team attempting to gain capture points is not, in fact, supporting their teammates. :eyesroll:

DAY 2 FAGGOTS
New Game mode announced, basically both teams have POOSH (their own) LITEL KART while stopping the others doing the same. Final stretch is side by side uphill and if you stop pushing it falls back (all told in a nice little postcard from the sniper to his mummy).

2 new Arena maps too, 1 is hilly, has killer saw blades and (dun dun dun) RAIN!! It's nice to see valve remembered they put wheather effects into the engine. Also a circular map around a GIANT DEATHRAY.

It's a weapon replacement. The headgear is going to be purely cosmetic.

Seems kinda, well, gay. However it does remove any way to really combat the spies if they're smart after they backstab you.

So, wait... What is this replacing? I'm guessing it's just a passive effect and not a weapon that you can arm, unless it's like the Sandvich, where you need to rearm it after every use. If the latter is the case, it would be awesome if you could also equip other teammates with it (you could only have one in the field at a time, either on you or on someone else), but then the spy would begin to become obsolete, and it could be used for griefing others by slowing them down.

It's a weapon replacement. The headgear is going to be purely cosmetic.

Seems kinda, well, gay. However it does remove any way to really combat the spies if they're smart after they backstab you.

If it replaces the SMG, the sniper will still have the kukri and vice-versa, or whatever the next replacement will be.
