A court in Sweden has jailed four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world's most high-profile file-sharing website, in a landmark case.
Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail.
They were also ordered to pay $4.5m (£3m) in damages.

Well, ain't that a kick in the head. =__=

What do you guys think about all this? The article says that the guys running TPB were operating solely to fill their wallets, but really, isn't that what these record labels are about too? Music's an art, and to me, art is something that the world over should enjoy. If you think back to the days before the internet, singers and songwriters were entertainers. They made their money doing live shows and appearances, and they lived for their music. Today, I look on the news and I see all this glamour and glitz about them, with cardboard cutout personalities, uninteresting and shallow.

Actually, I think it was about the time my friends had me listen to Lady GaGa's "Disco Stick" that I finally hit rock bottom with how shitty music has become. I think the world needs to come to terms with the fact that people aren't going to pay for recordings anymore. Once that becomes clear, artists can reform the way they work: putting out recordings to please their fans, doing shows to make their money, and dropping their lame-ass spoiled Hollywood lifestyle. Lose the record labels, and the people who deserve respect as talented singers will come out on top, with the dime-a-dozen hip-hop and pop artists left behind, where quite frankly, they belong.

This is going to have some pretty serious repercussions if they don't win the appeal.

Even if they do, there's hundreds of sites to take their place, hosted in different countries and immune to Swedish law precedent.

rossmum

Exactly. No matter what they do or how hard they try, nobody will be able to stop piracy. Every site that goes down will be replaced, and every new form of protection will either cause massive PR damage and therefore do more harm than good (Sony's rootkits) or be cracked eventually. Very little of the total proceeds actually go towards the artists, and the popular artists are already so rich they could burn half their money and still have more than most townships will ever have in their residents' collective lifetimes. I personally don't see why they're so desperate to crack down on it; for every person who pirates everything, there's another who buys things. A lot of people use it as a 'try before you buy', which is hardly unreasonable unless they start flogging it themselves.

And when all is said and done, and the internet is being clamped down on by the RIAA and MPAA (?), nothing and nobody will be able to stop friends from simply sharing songs and movies on discs.

It's a futile struggle which is doing nothing but pissing the average consumer off, especially what with WMG going Gestapo on Youtube and muting/deleting any video they find with even a hint of a song under their label.

That's a shame. But I agree with the sentiment that the battle is lost, but the war is not. It's gonna take a lot more than that to stop file sharing, illegal or no, and sooner or later the industry is going to have to embrace it or turn the internet into a police state.

Piracy might have been about stealing music/movies/etc at one point, but now it seems to be about sticking it to the man, and for the reasons Ross posted.

There're too many people doing this shit to make a buck off of this, and while that in itself isn't the issue, the issue lies in the people who are trying to make a buck off of the people who are trying to make a buck. If the record labels weren't so obsessed with pinching every penny possible, then there wouldn't be an issue.

Don't worry - we're from the internets. It's going to be alright. :-)

So, the dice courts judgement is here. It was lol to read and hear, crazy verdict.

But as in all good movies, the heroes lose in the beginning but have an epic victory in the end anyhow. That's the only thing hollywood ever taught us.

Really, its like he said, its not illegal under swedish law and even if it were illegal, copyright infringement is a civilmatter and you cant get jailtime for civil stuff.

Well, the appeal gives them an extra few years.

The more this particular topic goes on, the more I want the companies to win. I'm slowly leaning toward the other side, but not for the same reason. Frankly, if they don't want me to try and change my opinion on their product, that's fine. I can just assume it's shit like I always do, but this time, I'll ignore it and just move on. No more chances from me. As an incoming college student, I'm getting tight on two things: cash and time. I have no problem buying games solely from Valve/Epic if that's what I have to do to ensure I get my money's worth while maintaining the trust that the company and I have mutually given each other through the exchange of my money and the Steam service. Trying a game to make a decision takes time, and having to guess if a game's good or bad can eventually cost a lot of money. Hell, even one bad game can feel like a major loss in your bank account. Don't believe me? Halo 2 fucking Vista. So, you know what? Go ahead. I'm getting lazy, anyway. You can make the decisions for me, you crazed money-hungry pricks.

They have been staring this in the face for years, but the thing is, ITS PERFECTLY LEGAL.

Thats like if you got a hooker in Vegas and got arrested by california police.

In vegas its legal and the cali police have no jurisdiction to boot.

That's just the world we live in, where profit is the only concern of companys. After all, it's what they're for, to get more money this year than last to give their shareholders what they want.

All they're trying to do is make an example (which obviously won't work). It's just they're way of trying to stick it back at the priates.

Bummer, I love the pirate bay. Its a good thing I have Demonoid though, I'll just have to get used to it more. I really don't want to use any of those other sites like mininova and such, you just cant trust them as much. Not to mention they usually have porn all over the sides.

If I had a way to purchase things online, I'd love to buy a TPB T-shirt. I've wanted to for the longest time but have no way.

I use isohunt to get:

1. old software that has seeders but is no longer sold in retail. Like futurecop lapd (1998)
2. installers for games/programs if disc is damaged or lost (if I were really mean, I would've charged my friend for scratching my Splinter Cell Chaos Theory CD when he borrowed it, but I decided ah forget it and torrented the installer).
3. Old Half-Life 1 games especially CSv1.5 - I own all the real games on Steam, but I want to play off my USB drive at school (secret LAN party heh) without having to load up Steam.

Used to use isohunt to get installers for my ASUS EEE (no optical drive) until I learned that I could share the DVD drive in my main computer over my home LAN. Faster too.

And speaking of which, I forgot my Steam password so I might have to torrent all my Source games.

Arrested them? That's just retarded.

I only own Emulators. Even then, though, I own the consoles and for some of them it doesn't even matter; the games aren't even in production and can be obtained through intended download play.

Uh... you do realise you can recover that password through email, right? And even if you forget your email password, too, you can get in touch with Steam Support and get it back as long as you have some form of proof it's your account?

My first Steam game (DoD:S) was on a disc, so to get my account back all I'd have to do is send them the key off of that most likely.
