View Full Version : My PC has SIV, it's a government conspiracy

...In all serious, the PC itself seems fine but loading pages in either IE or FF takes forever, assuming they even load at all. Occasionally I'll get a burst of normality, but in terms of speed, we're talking literally slower than dialup here. Despite this, my ping seems perfectly normal and it started this morning and has been carrying on all day. It was so bad that I suspected Conficker might've somehow materialised without setting Avast off, but I can access AV software sites just fine (except for the insane load time, which is about the same as with other sites.) I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was something to do with my ISP, but I'd expect that to affect my ping and possibly even make my net drop out more, which it's not doing.

I don't recall changing any settings that could've done this and my PC is apparently virus-free, any ideas?

It's part of obama's and the australian governments plan to create the new internet back bone cristened internet 2.0 to censor the ship of any somalian pirates that are fighting the good fight against the tiranny of the reserve bankers that worship the owl god.

Heh.

Scanning my PC now, but if it turns up nothing (which is what I expect), I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it's fixed by tomorrow... if not, either my ISP is getting even less reliable, or both of my browsers are hosed.

Update... scanned my Windows drive, as I expected it found absolutely nothing. My net was fine for about a minute after it came back up (it's pretty intermittent, but at least it's usually tolerable in terms of speed); then it slowed right down again. I can stream YT videos at the same speed as normal, yet it's taking upwards of 5 minutes just to load a single forum page and three times that for an image; I tried to download an 11MB file and it told me it had 3 days remaining, after 5 minutes it went down to 6 hours, then 3 after another 2 minutes or so... it seems too 'specific' in what it slows to be my ISP, but honestly I can't think how I could pick up a virus and then go without Avast telling me about it or it making some other kind of change (PC performance is normal, nothing seems to have been added or removed, nothing odd is running in the background).

This is doing my fucking head in, hopefully it is just an ISP issue and they fix it by tomorrow...

Defrag then clean your Registry Errors.

I haven't run a defrag on this thing in forever, but the PC itself is performing fine; it's just the internet that's giving me shit, and even then it's downloads/browsing. My ping is normal and I'm streaming at normal speeds.

Already run a couple of Conficker checks and a scan with Avast, my PC has been completely clean since I formatted about a month and a half ago. Whatever's causing this, I strongly doubt it's a virus on my end... at the moment the primary suspects are my ISP or my browsers (though I find it odd that both FF and IE would suffer the same problem like this unless it was ISP-related; I've had this happen before, but never for this long).

defraging your system is not the same as a defrag pagefile.
http://www.theeldergeek.com/defragmenting_a_page_file.htm
also did you run malwarebytes? (you should, it usually finds things that AV can miss.)

I've got a massive pagefile on each of my drives, I should've realised that'd come bite me in the arse one day. I won't bother defragging it now - if the problem's persisting in a few days, I'll consider it then.

Got Malwarebytes downloading, but it's taking fucking forever.

Its a small setup file, what speed you dloading it at?

fuck all kb/s

It's done now, though

e/ Oh fuck off, corrupted setup file. Stuff it, if things haven't improved in a few days I'll go on an absolute witch-hunt, but for tonight I think I'll just have to trust Avast, fsecure and that CF eyechart thing. More likely than not it's just my ISP as usual and I'm being a paranoid twat (also as usual), but I guess it never hurt to be sure.

I had the same problem with IE and Firefox, actually. Switched to Chrome, everything is fine now... =| Even Safari was working better than FF or IE.

It's fixed itself, almost positive it wasn't a problem on my end. If it happens again, I'll whine to my ISP about it. Thanks for all the help, though.
