Upon further investigation, the game's 5th birthday was actually March 15 (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/halo-custom-edition/).
Who cares, let's hear some fucking memories.
I remember waiting for the HEK to be released, when all we really knew was that there was an object placer a lot like Sparkedit by the name of "Sapien." I also remember how excited I was to get my first level model from GMAX into the game, and how frustrated I was all those times when tool spat it back out for the piece of crap it was.

I remember back when I first started modding, I heard this program called Prometheus. Haven't heard much since. :p
Also, I remember way back then when I asked questions about every step on how to do stuff, and didn't know how to heightmap. Ahh, those days were terrible.

Two things: Damn I feel old now; also, never realized how far back everybody went here, so yeah, bit taken back thinking about the release of HEK.

I remember hearing about the HEK and being really excited about using it to create some maps of my own, it really got the old imagination going.
I remember getting frustrated with HEK during the summer of that year when I was building Abyss as my very first map and major 3d project and I had just graduated with my BFA in illustration. I set it aside for a month or so and then figured it out. Good times.

Ugh, I was such an idiot when I heard about Halo CE, I thought I needed 3dsmax and the HEK to be able to play custom maps, used to sign my posts, etc. Joined up to Gearbox around this time, 5 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long - gone so fast :(. Used to play in a 640x480 window with no specular and decals to keep the fps up.
Was an awesome time though - 100 cap ctf on Wartorn Cov3 was the best. Hoping for 1000 players on the night New mombasa was released,

5 years old, eh? I remember stumbling across CE and trying to create my own weapon using guerilla.
Exception.
Lol. Then came a year and a half of falling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole before I realized that everything I had been working on from the beginning was total fail. :P And thus I stand today, knowing quite a bit but not using any of it. Looking back on it, I'm glad to have been a part of it all. Thanks for the memories Halomaps, EPG, Gbx, and H2v/Modacity.

I remember the days right after Halo Trial was released, playing it as a LAN party in the school computer lab... with no pixel shaders, grey chiefs with black visors, and overall crap effects.
Took quite awhile before I found Halo Custom Edition, around the time that H2CE was releasing Zanzibar. It's been an interesting ride; nothing else I've seen in video gaming has been quite like it.
Still remember when I finally got my Radeon 9250, and my joy that I could run the game with specular, decals and all the effects the game had to offer... at 640x480. Still, the massive improvement from 640x480 with zero effects whatsoever was almost orgasmic. Bump mapping... actual shaders... Chief was GREEN for fuck's sake! Though it was pretty funny with camo 'cause that series of card was one of the ones that rendered camouflaged players as one solid colour. Someone would be trying to sneak up on me only they were bright blue (colour of the sky) against the bottom of Blood Gulch. Now, all them years later, I can render the game with full effects at 1680x1050 and I don't even know what the hell to do with myself.

Back then I had a HP laptop with an amd athlon xp processor and 512 MB RAM (shared, so went down to 448), and integrated ATI Radeon IGP 320M. Ran Halo CE on fixed function mode :P MC's armor is gray with a black visor, there are no patterns on the ground, etc. Looked like shit, basically.
But shortly after H2CE released I got a desktop capable of doing some gaming, was happily breezin' through CE after that. I still play H2_Zanzibar from time to time.

For some reason the first thing that came to mind was HTL. It was like a casual MLG for the Halo Trial.
I once played against there #1 player in a competition match. I was in the cave that had the flamethrower in it, and I had nothing but a pistol and and AR. I knew he was on the opposing cliff waiting for his shot, so I switched my AR for the flamethrower and made a run for the mini tunnel/cave thingy, shooting my flamethrower in a way where he would not be able to get a lock on me. He missed with all his shots, and I made it, only to be shot down on my way to blue base.
Then HTL died.
My first step into CE was admittedly when I saw a video on Youtube of a guy driving a Scarab on Extinction. I decided to get CE to do "cool" stuff like that. Of course I found out that the scarab mechanics sucked, but I eventually found good maps, and of course I found you lovable guys.

There was definitely something magical about those days.
And if my experiences weren't enough, my roommate in college for this past 8 months saw me posting here yesterday, and said, "oh, modacity? I remember that site. I used to post there way back." o_0 It took you an entire TWO SEMESTERS to remember that!? Of all the chances, that he and I would end up rooming together...

Came for the H2CE, stayed for the HEK, got sucked into GBX.
Don't really think I changed much over time besides concepts new to me and my opinions on them (like map/tag leaking/ripping)... I've always tried to keep a somewhat professional face and stay pretty low key and open-minded. Hell, I'll admit that I came from a (long-defunct) warez forum, and even there I was always trying to be the straight man in any drama that happened.
As I said on GBX, the past four years I've spent with the CE community has been pretty much the best times I've had with an online game in my life. All the maps, dramas, people, good and bad.

Sorry about the delay in responding. I think he said it was Venemos. I told him I couldn't remember ever seeing anyone by that name, and his story was that he came for a few months, posted up a storm, and then left, telling the mods to delete his account because it was getting spammed. Sounds believable, if a bit odd. Anyone remember him, from about 2 years ago? Must have been right after the name change, because he recognized it as Modacity, not h2v.

That's right. Halo CE turns 6 years old today. It's been a long, rocky road, but I am proud to call myself a Halo CE fan this day.
Just think... the babies who were born while we huddled around here, waiting for Wartorn Cove, New Mombasa, and Blood Islands... they're all in kindergarten now. Growing up. Playing Halo 3.
The servers are slowing down. People have all but forgotten the great classics. But somehow, deep down in my heart, I know that we'll see year 7.
It has been fun. Give yourselves a pat on the back once again.
