View Full Version : No rights?

Here's a good one for you guys. There's a new rule implemented in my school that just took effect today. Our school colors are royal blue and gold. The new rule is that if you have any form of clothing that mentions our school name or city name on it, the apparel has to be blue, gold, or both colors. In the event that it isn't, you are either sent home for the day and unable to make up the work you missed for dressing inappropriately or forced to wear whatever clothing our main school office can provide for you on the spot.

This is some serious bullshit. My sister has a pink hoodie with my city's name on it. She was sent home today after first period and my parent's received a phone call that my sister has dressed inappropriately. What the hell? It gets worse. The girl's lacrosse team has blue and gold uniforms, however it also has some green on it. They aren't allowed wearing them. The are being forced to repurchase clothing with just blue and gold on it at full price with no refund on what they already paid for or they are kicked off the team.

I don't understand how a school can enforce a stupid rule like this. Do we not have any rights anymore? If I wanna show school spirit by wearing a shirt saying the name of my school on it, I shouldnt get in trouble for it not matching my school colors.

If it's a public school, they aren't allowed to enforce specialized dress codes... The only thing that's allowed to be restricted is non-revealing material and nothing that encourages illegal activities. Did some kid at school shoot another kid for wearing green or something? >.>

Its a public city school. There's talk about a mandatory dress code starting next year. Is there an actual law stating public schools cant have a dress code? Thank god im a senior this year.

If you live in Canada you can tell them to fuck off and then tell the papers that they are infringing on your freedom of expression, that'll put them in line pretty fast, read up on the US equivalent and see if you can do some shit about it.

As far as I know, the only kinds of rules that can be enforced are ones that are approved by a state/federal office, and even then, it has to be for a damn good reason. If they're just doing it to get an extra thrill while beating off to themselves, then it probably isn't an approved rule.

Also what Sel said. Getting the public involved puts a good amount of pressure on someone/something, be it a school or business (which is what the fucking place sounds like. How many stories are we gunna get from your school? Why is your sister going there too even?).

Oh trust me I have a ton of stories.

Examples:
Fight Policy - If you do any form of self defense, you receive 2x the punishment of the one who started it.
Recycle Policy - If you have any form of metal or plastic during lunch, it has to be recycled. There's a 'bouncer' who guards the trashcans and checks your trays / bags (bags for those who pack lunches) and if you try to throw away any of it, you receive a detention.

And its a high school, my sis goes there just because she doesn't want to have to go to a different school when the one we are at is only like 5 mins from my house. She plans on just sticking it out through the rest of the year.

Make shirts for the entire school that break every aspect of the rule they put in place and have everyone wear it. Then get the press involved. You'll be all over the news and the school will reverse it the next day.

Really, they will. This is probably the only time you can have the entire school break a rule and not get in trouble. Plus, it's also entirely possible and affordable to do.

I like that.

And public schools CAN have dress codes...at least in Louisiana they can.

Our school is pretty normal for fighting.

Fighting is 9 days suspention for the first 2 times. If you hit back in defense your okay. No punishment.

I honestly don't see what your problem is. Is this your first encounter with school uniforms?

Syuusuke

I don't think its school uniforms...its restricting the use of school colors + other colors in on ones clothing

Why did this happen in the first place.

Dress code or not, it sounds like your school is so wrapped in political crap that they've lost sight of the reason why schools exist. Does the wrong colour on a shirt with a certain name affect someone's education, or the education of those around them? I seriously doubt it. Does sending someone home for said article of clothing affect their education negatively? Fuck yeah! Not only do they miss school, but it pisses off their friends and anyone who cares. It's not that difficult to understand, but I've never known a public school system to do something that improves learning; they seem fixated on restricting freedom instead.

In my school, if you dont wear any part of the uniform (black socks, blck shoes, trousers bought specially from one shop, jumper, shirt and tie) you get a detention. Also, you have to go through a 3 step process to go to the bathroom, which includes: Asking teacher permission, which can be denied at any time if there feeling like mean fuckers, signing of the homework journal, where all your bathroom breaks are catalouged, and timed. Then, you have to find the principal or vice-principal for the key, and they're not even around half the time. So yes, the majority of the school end up pissing on some teachers car and/or a bush.

It most certainly is.

My old school used to have a dresscode where you had to wear a green shirt and slacks. If you violated the fucking dress code then you would be hauled into the principles office and be changed into a school uniform with spare cloths (Which are usually 2 sizes to small) and be suspended the next day.

I only say that because there has to have been something going on for them to make such. Being a child of two teachers, I've come to the understanding that there is usually a reason for these things, and when there isn't, the teachers get it undone.

I used to have to wear a uniform in Primary and High School. It was never really an issue.

Heck, even some divisions in my college have some uniforms, like the IT school has to wear a grey polo with the school crest on it.

Heh, I love this country.

Our high school was pretty cash when it came to clothing, and I honestly don't think they cared enough to enforce anything. Chicks were CONSTANTLY wearing those ridiculous short skirts that reveal ass and thongs (or lack thereof :gonk:) if they ever bend, crouch, sit, or do ANYTHING other than stand during the summer.

As you may imaging, it was quite the challenge to keep our pants in the non tent position a lot of the time with all that teen spirit flying around.

Good times.

Schools, even public ones, retain the right to enforce a dress code. It does not infringe on any rights of the students. End of story.

To a varying degree, that is correct. Public schools here in Canada are unable to legally force you to wear any specific type of clothing (ex: uniforms), but they do try and keep the illicit messages and skimpy clothing to a minimum (except for my school apparently).

the reason we do it here is to make the barriers between social class's that little more blurred.

not everyone gets to pimp the latest brand name shirts and threads so it makes for less discrimination.
When it's done to the point of being anally retarded such as fucking suspensions then your school is just fucking retarded.

also Plasbian what the fuck is wrong with your school
this is like the 3rd one of these threads?

Dress code is pretty relaxed at my school, you just can't wear:
- revealing or see-through clothes (unless you wear a normal shirt or jacket over it, then they don't care)
- clothes with obscene words/pictures on them (F.C.U.K. shirts apparently do not count though)

That's about it and I think it's fair enough. Dress code was basically the same thing back in middle school in Cali.

wait wtf kind of school is this? (plas's). I never imagined public schools anywhere on this continent would enforce such retarded rules. Private schools maybe, but not public schools...

All public schools in Mexico enforce National Uniform laws. I had a buddy who lived there for two years. He said it was actually kind of nice because nobody got discriminated against on the basis of clothing.

At my school people wear three inch skirts, t-shirts with pot leaves, cross-dressed outfits, and lots of bandannas.

I wear a Pabst Blue Ribbon shirt ('twas a freebie) and nothing happens.

...but that's pretty silly. Not an infringement on rights, just incredible back-asswardsness in my glorious opinion...

yeah same here, in my primary school in asia I wore a standard uniform to public school (white button down shirt and blue shorts, plus standard gym attire for gym class, higher level years wear long pants instead of shorts, ties must be worn on special occasions). I didn't have a problem with it, and you're right there was no clothing discrimination because of the uniforms. Actually, I did have a problem with the fact that the gym shorts had no pockets, but that's about it.

In BC I have yet to witness any clothing discrimination. Most people I know at school don't give a damn about brands when it comes to clothes. To me, there are some things where brands matter, like graphics cards and MP3 players, and there are some things where brands are totally insignificant, like clothes and backpacks. Of course, if someone comes to school wearing clothes made of real gold, or if someone comes to school dressed in filthy rags, there'll be problems, but neither has occurred thus far.
