View Full Version : Where is Socrates now?

I respect authority as an influential force in my life, and I listen to it. However, I question it as much as possible. Socrates encouraged things like this; he's considered a great scholar, yet now it seems like his teachings are ignored, in favor of an all powerful authority. Oftentimes when I question things I find... well, questionable, I am silenced and forced to accept it as a societal norm. Kind of ironic how the teachings of a man from ancient Greece that were commonly followed are now ignored.

Why is this?

wow this post might not make much sense
it's 2:45 and im ranting about something
idk fuck

because the average IQ is falling because we wrapped everything up in a neat little bow with extra padding to avoid the stupid people killing themselves (through no fault of their own i must say) and thus allowing them to breed and drag the rest of us down with them.

also Old money.

While zilla offers one interesting viepoint, I have one that you may consider more relevant:

The Greeks stopped being important century's ago, nobody cares about what they have to say vOv

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I've decided that assuming that the Socratic method is dead because of the media or because of whatever's happening around you is simply wrong. There are always less "smart" people than "dumb" people, and there is always a majority willing to follow a leader. If the people you're hanging around tell you to stop, you're with the wrong crowd.

because the average IQ is fallingThe average IQ is always 100--but I understand what you meant.

i personally believe that it's not just the medias fault for the way things are, it's our fault as well.

When stupid people got up and spewed bile and bullshit at us from their soap boxe's TV or otherwise we didnt challenge them and call them out on it as often as we should.
we just ignored it.
now these retards have got legions of blind followers because they whernt shot down early on.

bleh.

Study US history and you'll find that that has pretty much always been the case. Actually, just study history in general. It's full of idiot cults.

Perhaps it has gotten a bit worse since the advent of rapid communication, but I try my best to look at the world as something that isn't completely horrid-- there is some hope in the world. and it lies in the proles

wat
they were never "commonly followed". He just happened to say what many people thought anyways.
Philosophers don't change the world. The world changes its philosophers.

I think the use of IQ as a measure of intelligence is ridiculous and ignorant. Like our species can define such a thing and then make a test for it yet we know so little about life's chemistry let alone our brain.

but that's just me

Everyone is skilled in one subject or another and they specialise on it.
With me i love art and science and to me both are the same, their both kinds of art but just because i have a good rating in those subjects dosnt mean i would be good for business studies for instance.
Im sure You could understand what i mean by science being a kind of art much the same with your programming that you do, there can be some elegance to the work you produce.

Actually, iirc he was executed for his teachings.

The problem with the depressing statistic that most people are not smart is that it is a tautology. "Smart" is usually defined relatively, that is, it's usually said that one person is either more smart or less smart than another, and "smart" in general usually refers to the former relationship. So if being smart really means being smarter than most, then yes, most people are not smart.

My opinion is that, while there are some true morons around, on the whole we're a good deal smarter than the ancient Greeks. I think our smart people are a lot smarter than Socrates/Plato.

That's not even the dumbest thing about IQ tests. Most of them are simple tests of knowledge, which is quite separate from intelligence.
