I got it for free from some random contest I don't even remember signing up for and played it for about 15 minutes before I was flooded with invites to whatever XBL MP game I was hot into at the time.

Anyway, now that I no longer have XBL Gold and don't really play my Xbox anymore I was thinking of playing it again, but I'm not sure.

Was the game that good?

thanks gays

I still have the game in it's original packaging from that contest.

Ehhhh, it was fun to a point. The main issues I had with it was that it almost NEVER fucking auto saved and you would die in some gay way and have to repeat the last 30 minutes of whatever you did. If you remember to quick save a lot then this isn't as much of a problem, but it was the main reason I haven't touched the game in ages.

The game also has a few fucking stupid glitches, for instance on some ice planet in the garage where you have to fight some dickheads I got into some big vehicle and used the turret to pound everything into oblivion, then found out I couldn't get out of this vehicle and had to start way back again.

I've also had the issue where I'll take an elevator and get stuck halfway up.

It also doesn't tell you controls you need to know, like for instance how to get out of your land rover (not sure if that would have worked in the above case, but fuck)

It might be good, but I didn't keep playing to find out.

Also protip, do not choose the infiltrator class, he is fucking useless, dies in no time and can't use anything other than a shit sniper rifle which is impossible to shoot with, and does piss all damage, and a pistol which is equally useless.

Yes.

Not for the combat; it sucks. It's the storytelling and the interaction; think KotOR, but taken to a ridiculously high level.

never played KotOR

Okay. It's essentially dialouge trees (person says something, you choose from a multitude of responses) but with a slight twist.

Listed are "thoughts," so to speak, such as "Sure," "No way," "Kill this bastard." Those will appear shortly before the character has finished talking, and you choose one of those thoughts, which your character will then convert into a full sentence. It's really a neat system.

The other draw is the choices you make. In theory, one wrong step could mean a death of a crew member or something to that effect.

Again, don't get this for the combat, but for the unique take on storytelling, as well as just a great space opera.

The sidemissions are pretty generic and not worth doing. All the side planets that don't take place on the the main quest look pretty generic.

Ugh, I hated the fucking dialogue bits, I would try to choose something to be nice, and this dickhead character would try as hard as he could to turn everything he said into something dickheaded :S

I played for about 15 minutes. 10 of those minutes were consumed by dialogue and the rest was dealing with the awkward controls. It feels to me like playing halo CE with third person hack on, except less comfortable. After that I set it down

I really enjoyed it. I played it on the 360 and the pc. Both are well done.

It was awesome, but if RPG gameplay isn't your type then Mass Effect probably won't change your mind.

thanks gays

Yes. On xbox, I played it at least 5 times through and on PC i just beat it for a 2nd time.

I only played it through one time. I liked it a lot thought. I'm happy for the sequel.

Have it on the 360...love the game, though it needs more action bits...the combat was a little sparse and almost always too easy regardless of difficulty.

and THIS.

Those two issues aside, it was a great game with a lot of replay value. Not as good as KotOR, but definitely a solid RPG.

All the elevators broke my heart too. Seemed like everything I did had to load for a while...

Edit: On xbox...

What? I loved the combat! If you played as a non-biotic, then you missed out on much of the fun.

Honestly, I didn't like KotOR. The story was okay and the combat was dull.

I played through Mass Effect multiple times. The game has issues, but the story is great and the combat is fun. I have a couple of suggestions for how to enjoy the game more.

Play as a character that is part-biotic, so that you have access to some of the more interesting abilities. Engineers are dull and soldiers are rather simple, gameplay-wise.
Ignore the uncharted worlds. Maybe explore a few of them, but they're all the same. They're just a waste of time unless you're really into the game.
Turn your useless items into omnigel. The item management in the game is awful, and soon enough you'll run out of inventory space and can't pick up new stuff until selling your old equipment or turning it into gel.
Only use money for the Spectre weapons, First Aid/Medical suit upgrades, upgrades that allow you to hold more health packs and grenades, and Quarian armor (if Tali is on your team). You will be able to get everything else from just killing enemies.
Save often! You'll regret it when you die and go back to the last autosave.

Mass Effect does have a few issues, but don't let them hold you back from enjoying a really good game.

Yep, pretty much those two things.

However, iunno what people were saying about combat, maybe they just didn't know how to do it right. Queueing up a bunch of shit and letting the shit fly was super awesome. Nothing like holding a guy suspended in air while he gets electrocuted, shot at with a super-powered assault rifle, then thrown against a wall.

I'm actually playing it for the first time now, I just borrowed it from a friend. I'm not that far into it at all, but so far I'm not really liking that much. Maybe its just not my preferred style of gameplay, as I'd rather watch a cutscene that plays out the story, then i go and do the mission.

The combat doesn't seem fun to me, as I'd rather just be able to mow through some enemies, pick up a better weapon until i'm out of ammo then do it again (i.e. halo). I'm going to keep playing it though and see if it changes my mind, or beat it as fast as i can and return it to my friend.

Warsaw

Well, you can mow through enemies, and that's the problem in my opinion...the combat lacks challenge, so long as you keep to cover.

Corndogman
May 17th, 2009, 08:09 PM
Well yeah, that more or less what I'm saying. I mean I want the game to mostly be combat, with more interesting and challenging scenarios. But I'm really just nit-picking because I just want the game to be all shooter which it clearly isn't.

At higher levels you don't even need to take cover. Just run in and mow'em down.

The appeal of KotOR was becoming a Jedi. If that was one of your childhood fantasies then obviously you would find it more appealing than say, Mass Effect, where you play as a generic secret agent type guy.

Besides, KotOR was way ahead of its time in storytelling and acting for a video game. Maybe it was a 'you had to be there' sort of thing.

ftfy :haw:

Also, Spectres are hardly secret agents at all...more like, the Gestapo: they are uber powerful, and every body knows about them, but just don't know the specifics.

God fucking dammit I hate this game! Why do you play for an hour without checpoints, then die and have to do it over again! arghhh.

I was starting to enjoy it a little more as I played it a bit more, but now I'm pissed off at it for that reason.

Uh, that's why you quicksave. hth

The only time I minded that is when I was driving on the planet where there were river of lava, the vehicle handling are pretty lame and I keep falling into the lava. :(

Yeah, because it steers with both thumbsticks (or with the direction keys and mouse on PC). It gets annoying to use after awhile.

Yes, thats the exact level I'm on. Though I'm not falling in the lava I just keep getting killed by geth.

And there is a quicksave option? Is it only on PC version or Xbox too?

Warsaw

XBOX, you gotta go and save it the hard way. What difficulty are you playing on dude, that mission is easy.

On 360 you have to press Start, then save iirc.

Saving constantly all through the lava mission would be a good thing to do, too, since it barely saves any checkpoints.

Ahh, okay thanks. The problem I have with this game is that it doesn't like to tell you anything about how to play the game. It gives you like 5 of the controls in the beginning.

And yeah, I pretty much suck at the game. I keep dying in that mission when have to get out the vehicle, I agree the rest I easy though.

Warsaw
May 22nd, 2009, 10:50 PM
If you can, use the sniper at the end of the vehicle run; it makes that part so much easier. Also, as for party members, I always bring Tali and either Ashley, Wrex, or Liara.

Holy Hell I'm late to this party. Me and a buddy picked up the game a few days ago, and we beat it last night.

I gave Mass Effect 10 out of fucking 10. Everything was amazing. My only complaint has to do with conversation transitioning.

4 words:

I love sniper rifles. :-3

EDIT:

This is false. REALLY. false.
I'm an infiltrator and I'm pretty good. :/

EDIT 2: Basically everything arteen said yeah.

What difficulty did you play it on...try Infiltrator on Hardcore. Anybody is good on Normal or Veteran (pretty much no distinction between those two difficulties). On Hardcore or Insane though, unless you have your class's role down pat, you really appreciate the firepower that Soldier has.

TeeKup
August 11th, 2009, 11:57 AM
That would explain. Did it on Veteran.
