I don't know why they don't just tell their parents to go fuck themselves for being such bigots. I would.

Yea I remember reading about this sometime last year. Totally ridiculous. I swear people are retarded, the only difference is the color of skin. If I were the students, I would have told the parents to back off. Cause after all, it's THEIR prom, not their parents' prom.

Wow... It seems as if the author of the article is racist, too, especially on page 2. While they make an "attempt" to be unbiased, they have to mention things such as how they piled into a car to go to a KFC and how, when there, they had 2 buckets of Fried Chicken, etc., etc.

Wow, that is so disgusting. What the hell is wrong with those parents? And I was here thinking that people were trying to remove racism...so much for that down there...

Ok, yes this is wrong, but you people calling the article racist, you are being way too politically correct, and youre the one who is technically racist in your own eyes as you are the one making the stereotypical connection. In these segragation stories they always put the blacks as the victims as thats how it was back then. No where in this article does it say that the blacks had a shittier prom, but it followed them because that is the usual story, and to get the story they represented the facts of where they went and what they did and where they got these quotes from. Racism is bad, and the white parents obviously are, but the reporter is actaully more bias in that blacks are the victims and not gluttons eating fried chicken. He can't change facts, though insigifigant as to what place they went to eat, anyone who has taken a journalism class knows this.

yeah you would think. theres one black guy and one black girl at the private catholic school i go to, but shit theres like 8 different gay guys. its not that i have an issue with it, it just seems strange that all the gay guys go to a school with 70% girls in it when theres an all guy school about 20 minutes away

:shake: It would appear that the residue of prejudice is still clinging to the minds of some people, not just in the south, but everywhere. While this particular article shouldn't be representative of everyone's point of view, it is still an indicator of the sad state of mind still present so many years after Martin Luther King fought for equality. I don't believe racism will ever completely die, but it will certainly all but disappear one day. What some call "tradition" seems to me like another case of old habits dying hard. It's only tradition to the older among us because they were the ones raised during the social turmoil of the sixties and seventies. Especially in the south since many are far right, so change does not come easily. I live in the south and still see some examples of racism. While I myself am not racist, some of my friends are. It's disappointing, actually. But society will eventually mature.

Sucks that some people still think like this. However, unfortunately, I'd predict that in the near future, as more and more Asiatic and Middle-Eastern peoples immigrate to North America, and keep scooping up jobs, that we may end up with a revival of racist tendencies among Caucasians, and perhaps even Latinos and African-Americans. Society's weird, yo!
But really, segregated proms? :fail:
Sel

I'm not going to go and call it outright racist because it obviously isn't, it's an echo of racist tendencies from days long past, still kinda surprising though.

I live in Florida, in a nice area, but I go to an IB school 45 min to 1 hr. away in a ghetto area, and there is no shortage of rednecks, and some people have confederate flags in their lawns or walk by in confederate belts :(
I really just hate intolerant people, I see no reason to hate others over small things.

I can top that. Unless my eyes were very much deceiving me, I saw the WWII Nazi German flag (as in the one with the cross, but also the swastika smack-bang in the middle of it - not just a straight Nazi Party flag without the cross) flying over someone's house in Lithgow. I only caught a fleeting glimpse as the train passed, but I'm absolutely positive it was that... not many flags are even similar, let alone close enough to confuse.
