My XBox just RRoD'd. Fuck that.

So, is there any way I can turn the remaining functional parts into a weak PC? I would love to have something around I could run the Modacity game server from.

Uh, or just send it in.

^This. Your warranty is almost certainly intact. Send the fucker in. The innards will be replaced with new hardware and it'll be about a fifth as loud when you get it back.

My 3-year warranty period is over. This is the original XBox 360. It expired two weeks ago. Good timing.

No. The insides were desinged for the Xbox360, not a PC.
You might be able to use the HDD though.

Could phone them up just to check and if they say no then theres always the chance you can repair it yourself.

I'm not talking about taking the parts out and putting them in a PC. I'm talking about leaving everything as is, strip out the problematic part, and put some OS on it. I'm not sure if anyone has done anything like this before so just wondering if there's anything in the realm of possibility.

The processor is like a triple core 3.2 GHz processor, seems like I should do something with it...

I will call though and see what the deal is. I am not very hopeful about getting this thing fixed though, and would like to do something besides just tossing it.

The internet jack might work along with the HDD and processor, I'm really not sure though. Wouldn't hurt to try :p

And is your RRoD warrenty out? or just the main warrenty?

Its possible to install Windows XP on a PS3 (Its Linux with Windows emulation). Maybe there is a way for Xbox, I dunno though its doubtful.

If you're going to open it up, you might as well just try to fix it. Mr. Buckshot was showing me how to fix mine when it RRODed. Also toweling it is a good temporary fix.

get a mod chip >_>

also my xbox has RRoD'd like 9 times and still functions fine, i just let it sit for a day and turn it back on.

How about you send me the broken Xbox360:D

The grapics card and motherboard would be completely useless though.

It's not currently possible for the 360's hardware to be used for anything more than doing what MS wants it to. There's not been much homebrew activity on it because they pretty much locked down all the hardware.

Tried the towel trick yet? Worked for me and a few friends' boxes.

Warm a towel up in the dryer. Wrap it around the xbox, power it on and wait 10-20mins.
Works everytime after this. Worth a shot.

Getting the towel hot enough would mean melting the damn thing.

The towel "trick" is really weak. You know what it does, right? Overheats the damn thing even more.

It supposedly helps make the connections between the GPU and mobo better. I used it to keep my xbox alive an extra 2 months.

Make sure not to make the towel to hot. Might do more bad than good.

Try the xclamp fix, I got a guide on it in tech talk, and if you want to use the xbox for soemthing, you can use the timing attack method to downgrade the dashboard/kernal, download the haxed king kong iso, flash your xbox 360 drive firmware, and then run linux.

I don't think you all realize, just letting it sit in cool air would fix it. the only reason the towel trick "works" is because the overheat isn't that bad and if they let it sit it would perform the same with or without it.

if it's overheating, adding more heat will not fix the problem

THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE, QUICK SPRAY IT WITH WD40....

I think their theory is that is will reconnect loose solders...

Exactly, but its been proven time and time again that it does fix it temporarily.

did they run a control test with another system which also RRoD'd and not put that one in a towel? cause if not then nothing is proven, it just happens under coincidence.

Allow me to be that test.
I left my console on for like 45 mins and it still RRoD'd.
Mostly because I was bitching at Adam for "breaking" my console. He had turned it on when it RRoD'd.
I left it off for about 24 hours.
I later did the towel trick for 45 minutes (maybe less)
and it worked fine for a few weeks but RRoD'd again so I sent it in.

And I, sir, am not full of shit.

never said you were i just fail to see how adding heat to heat will fix an overheating problem... and like i said, my xbox RRoD's semi frequently. I let it sit for a few and its good to go again.

Not all red ring errors are over heating issues, some are due to faulty ICs.

I let it sit for a few and its good to go again. One theory I heard is that when the console overheats it warps the board. Putting it in a towel causes it to heat more evenly inside the case and through some magicks, warps the board back into shape.

Another reason I heard for the RROD occurring in the first place is the heatsink losing contact with the GPU. Which is why the X-clamp works. Apparently it tightens down the heatsink bolts.

TheGhost

It's both. The overheat warps the board, which causes the poor solder connections to come loose. Overheating it can temporarily remedy the cold colder joints, but it's really making the problem worse, not better.

This, toss it over here and I'll go at it with our Benelli Super Black Eagle II semi-automatic 12 gauge! Such a beautiful shotgun tbh, best semi-shotty I've ever used.

when you get the BSOD you'll feel like you just took a huge shit in your stomach. You'll get the sensation that your whole PC is ruined.
