Well I am basically the average user with a little bit more know how. I love Ubuntu because I can put it on a USB and bring it with me wherever. I heard about Mint through stumble the other day so I am curious:
I know there are 1,000,000,001 articles about Ubuntu vs Mint, but I really cant go with those folk's opinions much. I really wanted to know what you gents think.
Ubuntu is great and simple, but that terminal stuff intimidates worms like me.
I hear that Mint is simpler and has more stuff prepackaged. I know this doesn't in ANY WAY eliminate the terminal stuff, but it makes me feel safer rofl.
I know very little and just would like a new OS to bring around on a USB.
So which of the two is better suited to my needs?
Ubuntu or Mint

If you want something to carry on a USB stick, you're better off with Ubuntu. Outside of that, I've never actually used Mint so I can't really say. My money is always on Ubuntu, though.

Well I went ahead and did Mint anyways (because I had already started)
and I must say, I love Ubuntu, but this boots faster, is better organized, and seems more stable.
Its also faster, Ubuntu on my USB would chug sometimes but this things fast.

Which version of Ubuntu were you using? 9.04 is the fastest booting Ubuntu version.

GOD DAMN I LOVE THIS.
I can't really find any differences so far, though; except for keyring, I like that.

I have both mint and ubuntu from 8.04 build, and The only difference i see is a little better menu organization and the pre-included software such as java, mp3, movie support, etc that ubuntu did not have. I use mint primarily on my laptop, and love it.
But 9.04, I have no idea. Both look great!

Yeah, the 9.04 is what I had most recently.
The boot time was unbelievable.
Not REDICULOUS, just too long for me.

Oh wow... Linux mint is hardcore. Although, everything in firefox is crazy small now.

15-20 seconds is too long for you?
Huero: Differences between what and what? Ubuntu has Gnome-keyring as well...
@kenney001: You should know that the reason Mint has those is because it's breaking the law. Funny how the damn DMCA works... Ubuntu was supposed to start shipping with OpenJDK but it was too big to fit on a CD. Mint ships on a DVD, right? Sad as that may be, it's still very easy to get all of it in Ubuntu. First thing I do is pop open the media repos and install VLC for all my playback needs, and Java usually comes when I need it.

This was my first time with Linux; I meant between it and Windows. I'm sure that the more I look into it the more differences I will find.

actually it was about 2:30 for ubuntu to boot.
and about 15 for mint.
But thats only on every machine I have used it on, but I am not saying mint is for everyone right off.
Try them both.
Its just a no brainer to me that mint is in no way LESS than ubuntu and it comes with more stuff already put into it.
Its better because its more convenient.

Augh, stop arguing, you're getting nowhere. The way I see it Ubuntu is better suited as a desktop OS, while mint is better for portability. I love Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop, runs like a charm.

Oh I wasn't arguing.
They are both fantastic!
Its just that mint is better suited to my needs.
But with simple tweaking, Ubuntu could be just as useful.
Its a matter of convenience.

I prefer linux ubuntu (http://tips-linux.net/en/linux-ubuntu/linux-distribution/install-ubuntu) because it is more used and has more "support" from linux users

Holy crap hello bump. But on that note, yeah, if I had to I would use Ubuntu.
But I'll stick with Windows anyway.

Running Ubuntu 10.10, no complaints. Does everything I need it to do.
Gonna upgrade to 11.04 later today I'll let you know how it is.
