View Full Version : Regarding browser wars...

I used to use IE6 out of habit. It wasn't the fastest, it wasn't the most secure, but until FPSB became an attack site without my knowledge it didn't matter because I'm not a retard. However, I decided I may as well start using FF just to be on the safe side.

I am utterly unimpressed. For all the spruiking the FF fanboy brigade do, it's barely any better than IE6 was. About the only advantage is that it displays .png transparency properly; the spellcheck is useless as it calls out words that are not spelled incorrectly in the first place, then completely ignores words that are. It doesn't even work at all most of the time. Actually, the download history list is nice too, as is the crash recovery. Other than that?

It's not particularly faster, but my main issue lies with just how incredibly unstable it is. I'm not exaggerating when I say that FF is now the leading cause of my computer slowing to a crawl or crashing outright. One moment I can be merrily internetting and the next, FF has taken an almighty, semi-liquid, reeking turd all over my PC. I get more system-crippling memory leaks from FF in a week than I did from IE in a month. Not twenty minutes ago, I went to download a skin for Il-2 and upon the save box opening, it locked completely and not even task manager could close it. The site is clean, the file is clean, and I didn't do anything I wouldn't normally do. I guess FF just decided it hadn't fulfilled its crash quota for today. I had to reset my fucking PC to get it running normally again.

Let this be a lesson: browser fanboys are, without exception, absolute fucking retards. Pick one that works for you and stick to it.

You're doing it wrong. FF comes preconfigured to not be fast for your own safety.*

I started using Chrome about 6 months ago and haven't looked back. I till use IE or FF for things like streaming video off fox and abc.com. You should give it a try, It's really the fastest and most friendly browser out there.

Same. Firefox has never given me any problems, but IE constantly froze up and crashed.

Does it come preconfigured to shit all over my memory on a whim? Because that seems like a pretty dumb thing to preconfigure, and jokes aside, I'm left wondering how the fuck they still haven't fixed the stability problems which absolutely plague Snaf and I.

Firefox has been always been flawless with me, regardless of the computer it was on. Even with my 3.5ghz quad core, IE still runs noticeably slower than FF3. I would never go back. :/

How much did you pay for it?

I like spell check, it makes me look more competent (that was spell-checked). I like being able to open many tabs without the browser taking my computer's resources. I prefer it to IE because I get less warnings.

Also, who gives a crap about FF fanboys? They don't seem to be open minded (I've used IE, Opera, and several other browsers), and why would you listen to somebody bragging about the browser they use? Who cares. Use the one that suites your needs.

I never really liked FF's feel and internet explorer always bugs out on me. Been using Opera for years. It works fastest on my PC and I can't live without its navigation short cuts pretty much.

Firefox works fine for me. There are tuts to increase page load speed, but the memory thing could be an issue for a lower end pc I suppose.

I use Firefox regularly, except when I have to go to a heavy Javascript or whatever intensive site. In that case, FF is almost unusable, and I'll switch over to Chrome. Chrome is very solid.

Just trying out opera from a few suggestions in this topic, and have found it has moved on quite a bit since the last time I used it. Props to the makers +1

I like Firfox, it never runs slow for me like IE does. The only thing with FF is that, like Rossmum stated, is a heavy resource hog. Right now, firefox.exe is using 307,792K of my resource. That's nothing compared to what IE used to use though. Is there any way I can lower the resources firefox uses?

if i leave FF open, it fucks up my pc. I don't exactly have a slouch of a computer. The problem is FF specific only. It makes my taskbar, desktop, etc, render abnormally, as well as any other programs (should i even have others open). I was about to post this topic myself, Ross.

Also Firefox 3 here, never had problems except from a media plugin or two. Why can't sites just use Flash player dammit?

I use Firefox myself.

IE, for me, is absolutely HORRIBLE. Constant viruses, it's SLOOOOW AS FUCK... I went to FF around 2004-5-ish and never looked back. On the school computers, I still have to use IE, which reminds me of how much I hate it.

I've never tried Chrome or Opera, so I can't say anything about those, but FF, while it DOES slow down my computer occasionally, its hardly ever noticeable, and the plugins are nice.
I've modified my version so it loads 100x faster, and, well, I'm happy with it.

But, I didn't switch to it because I had any problems with IE. I just did it because I was bored and wanted to change something.

Someone jacked it and used it to spread rootkits, which is how I picked mine up. As far as I know, it was a while before they worked out how it was being done and repaired the security breach.

As for the system it's running on... my PC is no speed demon, but it's reliable and not as bad as some peoples' I know. Earlier I had two windows (I don't use tabs, force of habit) open and both were on loaded Youtube videos. FF decided it wanted to use 80-98% of my CPU's processing power for itself for no readily apparent reason, and closing it and then restarting it on the same pages didn't help. I had to close the second video before pasting the link in a new window before it decided to stop fucking with my PC. If there was any apparent and excusable reason for this crap, I might not be so pissed off at it, but they seem totally random.

I used the IE8 beta, which sucked, so instead of switching to IE7, I decided to try FF, and I have never gone back.

I like IE7, and if they fix IE8, I will like that too, but I just love Firefox better.

Does it still do that annoying clicking thing (sound) when you load a page? I tend to have my speakers muted when I go to GetFirefox.com (... I installed Win7 RC a few days ago...)

I use firefox, it's quite stable, and I enjoy how customizable it is. As much as I like Chrome, I can't live without adblock plus, and I don't wanna have to use privoxy to do so (the current workaround it seems). That plus the lack of Stylish and Greasemonkey put me off Chrome.

I don't even use IE, if Firefox gives me problems with a website, I switch to IE mode using the IE tab plugin, so I don't have to open another browser, it's great. Also means I can run windows update (on xp) within Firefox.

What can I say? It fucks my computer up its ass. I don't completely hate it though. Opera will mess up with buttons or other things on Facebook then I havce to use firefox.
Firefox is a lot more stable with it's content though.
And what version is firefox on? 3.10? And they still havn't fixed the bug where it will disapear from the taskbar.

The second I heard about Firefox (like 4+ years ago I think) I switched from IE, never went back. I only use IE for windows update. It just caters for all my needs.

Looks good, very customizable and safe. Ticks all the boxes. Okay it might be slow starting up, but I can wait for the benefits.

Firefox is getting really slow for me lately but maybe that's because of all the addons I have installed. If I am going to browse forums or stumble I use Firefox since I can only get my addons with Firefox (ie: Stumbleupon, Pagerization, GreaseMonkey). If I am going to play a flash game or video I use Chrome. Much faster. I only use IE for the sites that require it like my college site or my work site.

I personally use Firefox for it's expandability through plugins. I've got one called Firebug which is like an HTML DOM inspector on crack; I can make changes to CSS and HTML on a page in real time to preview how something would look; invaluable for working with vBulletin's template system, and CSS in general, as well as a plugin that can convert Unix timestamps into something more human-friendly.

I have no issues with other browsers; in fact, I always at least check anything I write up in IE to make sure that it looks the same, or at least similar. As a web developer, I have to make sure things work for most, if not all platforms.

klange
June 11th, 2009, 12:49 PM
There's a format friendlier than timestamps? What, you can't calculate your month/day/year from seconds since January 1st, 1970? Psh.

All my sites work in IE, but I block IE6 from accessing my blog because if you're using IE6 you have no reason to be on my blog - everything on it is about Linux.
