View Full Version : Portalling a BSP?

How would I portal a BSP? I've read the HEK manual, but it really doesn't explain jack. I need to do portalling alike to Coldsnap; it's for a very large map. Anyone capable of explaining the process?

Can we see what your bsp looks like first?
Just curious, that way I can show you how I would do it - or try to explain it my best.

If you want it similar to Coldsnap, what helped the map out was fog. The sky was primarily a "fog sky" which had no model, only a certain color. In Coldsnaps cause, a dark blue color. The fog was also done at this color, along with the thickness being somewhat near high.
Of course, it still has portals, but it doesn't require as much when you have your "fog-distance" limit on a high/low number (Not to sure, sometimes high is for making sure the player can see something without the fog blocking the way, while having it low kind of prevents seeing the bad portals, but have reduced sight.
Thats my two cents.

I'm pretty sure Tiamat didn't use fog, though I could be wrong. If I remember right when beta testing with him, he did something because the bsp would clip with the skybox and cause problems.
I really wouldn't make a map the size of Coldsnap or Hugeass because it was just boring.
If you want to make a map start small and learn the engine before you get overzealous. Learn to walk before you can run.

I understand where you're coming from, however I've made smaller unreleased maps before and I do mostly understand the engine. This is not as big as coldsnap, but it's close. I just needed something to use Longswords and Pelicans in without worrying about the map being too small for it to work right for gameplay purposes. (The longswords won't have nukes... I hate those things. More aimed at carpet bombing and napalm strikes instead.)
I can't get a picture of the BSP right now, but I'll throw something up tomorrow to show you the thing.

There are more than enough terrible maps with unbalanced over sized vehicles. Hell even I made one (although my concept was a little more original)
Try doing something that hasn't been done a million times. Just a friendly tip.

Here's a picture of the BSP. It hasn't got any buildings added yet, as I'm just trying to get a working BSP first.http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/l/ll7/66860/vtaveqjhzi.jpgI've got more stuff I'm adding, it isn't just large vehicles, as it is.

Just make terrain portals then..
But it's a waste of time going through the trouble portaling it, if your just gonna add to the bsp anywho...
Just my 2 cents.

You read the HEK tutorial wrong then. Basic terrain portals are explained in there.

Yeah, I sure did. Thanks. (I seem to have a habit of missing the obvious... bleh.)

Pretty much make some planes that intercept the bsp entirely and go from there. Sie-yim-pol
