After six years off the air and rumours of a comeback, it’s finally official: Futurama is being resurrected.

After Fox cancelled the sci-fi animated series in 2003, a spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television now confirms that Comedy Central has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s comedy, which will begin airing in mid-2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Its “blockbuster” performance on DVD combined with its successful rerun airings are the reasons for its revival.

Sounds a lot like what happened with the formerly cancelled show Family Guy, which was also reinstated after its post-cancellation success.
“When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing — that cancelled series stay cancelled and cannot be revived,” 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said.

“But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back.”

Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John Di Maggio have also re-signed to provide the voices for Fry, Leela and Bender, Variety reports. No word yet if the new episodes will air in Canada, though repeats air on YTV and Teletoon.

Futurama aired from 1999 to 2003 on Fox, and centred on Philip Fry, a pizza delivery boy who accidentally froze himself on Dec. 31, 1999, and woke up 1,000 years later with a bizarre new group of friends including Leela, a tough, one-eyed alien, and robot Bender.

Best show ever.

And it was very explicitly said really recently that "into the wild green yonder" was the last movie and episode they were going to make.

It comes up at 10 YOUR local time. But since there are so many flyover states in central time they just said f*ck it and gave them whenever the east coast airs.
