Security experts have discovered two novel forms of Mac OS X malware.
OSX/Tored-A - an updated version of the Mac OS Tored worm - and a Trojan called OSX/Jahlav-C... (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8096822.stm)
I guess those adverts saying macs don't get viruses are now invalid.
Macs maybe based on media editing but porn is the most lucrative media of them all.

Macs have always suffered from malware, it's just that those creators target Macs far less often than they target PCs, but it doesn't mean no one targets Macs. I remember back in middle school when a virus crashed the entire network of iMacs for the whole day.

You have to be smart enough to know when you are on an attack site. I mean, it's blatantly obvious 99% of the time

The downside, of course, is that it's linux. :p
From what I understand, there have always been ways to exploit Macs, but not much of a reason to bother. Macs may (or may not) be harder to exploit, but the market share of Windows makes writing viruses for that OS much more 'rewarding'.

because supposedly that's one of their positives. The supposed lack of viruses.
The reason there are so few is because no one cares about macs.

At least I have the balls to admit my operating system has had viruses written for it.
Two*. And they were both proof of concepts to force action on security holes. And they worked.
* Legitimate viruses that actually were capable of taking out a system. All others do jack shit and fall under the same category as tracking cookies on your virus scanners.
@Llama: There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of pieces of malware for Windows.
There are ~1000 for Linux, none of which have ever propagated, and far more for OS X, many of which have propagated.

You know what the first thing I do when I re-install Windows or set up a Windows machine for the first time is? Install a anti-virus/spyware/adware/etc. You know what the first thing I do when it starts to slow down is? Run one of those programs, if not all.
You know what the first thing I did when I got my Macbook Pro? Installed Firefox. Want to know what I do when it starts to slow down? Well, I'll tell you as soon as I experience a slow down. :)

Pretty much the only way you can get something nasty if you're sensible is through previously trustworthy sites which have been hijacked and used as attack platforms (FPSB, looking at you). That rootkit was the only genuinely malicious piece of software I've had for about five years.

~windows supremacy~That's somewhat correct...
Windows came into the market with the mindset that the computer is for your usage and you can do whatever you want with it. Apple came in with that mindset too... Unix (sort of) did not and designed their OS around security.
Windows: Performance enhancements and convenience of lack of "barriers" are now found to be full of security holes... and Microsoft spends a LOT of time trying to make old stuff work -- just not be exploitable. They're becoming secure as the holes disappear or become separated from places the bad guys can access.
**Very profitable because there's a lot of users who simply wouldn't know if they had a virus even IF it was obvious...**
Apple: Performance enhancements and convenience of lack of "barriers" were found to be not secure... so they dumped their OS and let their consumers take the expense of upgrading to a secure OS made by University of California -- Berkley Institute ((BSD))... there were a few shims to allow OS9 software to work, but they're gone shortly after. They've become more secure by telling all their customers to jump from plane to plane while in flight.
**Not very profitable because there's not a lot of users... and the users who are there typically understand a BIT about computers**
BSD/Unix: Pretty much rock solid... few holes here and there but they get fixed fairly quickly.
**Very profitable because while there's not a lot of users... what they're used for is worth a lot**
And guess what...
With all the organized crime?
It's all about profits... virus manufacturers actually have development budgets.
:)There's your problem... if you get a virus -- AV software will not clean it. It can get too far into your PC to clean. Reinstall Windows and keep it up to date.
To keep a PC reasonably secure:
-Keep Windows up to date
-Keep a firewall, preferably hardware (read router with only safe ports forwarded and no DMZ)
-Keep a hard-to-guess logon password (vista only... XP and below does not enforce passwords on remote-execution... Windows 7 generates a password for you)
-Don't click on or do anything stupid
Pretty much the only way you can get something nasty if you're sensible is through previously trustworthy sites which have been hijacked and used as attack platforms (FPSB, looking at you). That rootkit was the only genuinely malicious piece of software I've had for about five years.Within reasonable doubt you mean... you can't *prove* that true... otherwise you're terribly complacent.

Windows has the advantage of getting a few million clueless people duped... Linux it's more about like -- targeting one or two clued people.

I prefer my Mac for everyday things, chatting, web surfing, music, etc, and my Windows PC for my games (mainly Steam, 360 for everything else) and technical work.
I love the fact that I can put my mac to sleep and open it up 2 hour later on a plane and it works just as well as it did when I had it at home, close it after a few hours on the flight, and open it up once I get to my destination hours afterwords and still have full use. I've never had a Windows Laptop that performed similar. I always had to completely shut them down and restart them. It's got perfect hardware/software relationships becuase they're both put out by the same company. If there was a similar Windows machine I'd probably enjoy it just as much.
Just to point out, I'm not a Mac fanboy nor a PC fanboy, I like them both equally, and invest in both (build my own PC, over pay for my own Mac's.)

I find mac with a one button mouse bad. new macs are awesome. still don't like the Upgrade? throw it out!
PC for me since I get more variety of choices to choose from (like I actually choose which one I "buy," parents still alive and still using over last oz. of it as i can so buying cheap computer every few years is working for me right now).

The only Mac computer I'd consider getting is one of those new 13" MacBook "Pros," since they cost just a little more than a laptop with similar specs. I play games a lot, so I need a PC, but if I needed a notebook that was light, transportable, and didn't need to play games, I'd get the Mac.
Otherwise, I want this. (http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9850-built-clevo-m980nu-gaming-laptop-order-p-2586.html)

Depends on the computer really, but its rather fun and once you have it working its pretty cool. Intel Pcs make amazing macs (since you know our hardware is probably superior and WAY cheaper)

Best off getting a Mini 9 and putting OSX on it. Everything runs perfect down to the sleep mode, bluetooth, wireless, fn keys, and supposedly even multitouch.
Mine cost me around 560$ total, but you could shave that down to around 400$ if you needed it to be, plus you can save at least 15$ using your student discount.

Most macs don't come with a 1 button mouse anymore... they come with a 3 button mouse (or 5) but it looks like a 1 button mouse.
Or if you were talking about the trackpad on a macbook... put two fingers on the touchpad and hit the button... right click. Sounds weird but after about fourteen seconds you get used to it and love it.

Look at Heathen's specs duder...those are pre-Intel/Apple partnership. He might have a hell of a ride trying to put OSX on that machine.
The best way to put OSX onto any machine is to first have largely compatible hardware, then buy a retail copy and use a bootloader to install. Other methods are available, but the functionality is crippled, i.e. iDeneb, Kalyway, etc.

Also the Mighty Mouse can only register one button at a time... which is why people stick a standard 3 button mouse in their Mac as soon as they can.

The newest mac I ever used had a wierd mouse. Granted I never use macs, so i was bound to be confused anyways, but it was really irritating. It had two buttons that seemed to do exactly the same thing, and one "scroll wheel" in the middle. However it wasnt a scroll wheel. It was a ball. the ball did absolutely nothing. I rolled it in hopes of scrolling through long windows, but no luck. Pressing it down did exactly the same thing the other two buttons did. I quickly got sick of that shit and left. Can anyone explain to me exactly what happened?
