I know this is another external HD thing, but this time its knida my fault :embarrassed:
Basically, it goes like this: I set access restrictions on a folder on it, but then the PC with the user I restricted it to died so I took ownership of that folder on this laptop and enabled all the options (i.e full control). I can now access the files but not use them. Anyone know how I can removed all restrictions? The old PC was Vista Business and this is XP Pro btw if that gives any clue.

Convoluted Method: Throw in a Linux Live CD and mount the drive. Start moving files between the drive and the virtual file system, then move them back (probably best to go one by one). All of the file properties will be lost.

You can take the easy route and just download Ubuntu (http://ubuntu.com), as it comes with the required NTFS drivers. Download, burn, insert, boot. Go to Places > Computer and double click on the icon labeled "[size of your hard drive] Media" and it should mount with full read/write permissions, then you copy forward and back, which should erase the permissions, giving you globally accessible files.

Do I have to burn it or can I mount it off the hard drive using software?

Um. It's another operating system. You have to burn it. The CD is "live" in that it can be booted from. Though, with Ubuntu, you can use "Wubi", but that's more for if you want to actually use it... though it may still work... Meh, just burn the thing.

I've tried burning it twice and both times it doesn't pick anything up.

Are you burning it right? Those live CDs just work, so I assume you did it wrong. Is your optical drive set as first boot so it picks up the disk?

No I haven't but the files seem to have fixed them self...for now.
