Has anyone updated/ broken their new iDevice?
If you haven't, the info is here (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/).
It currently supports ever iDevice besides the iPhone 3G S.
Post:
redsn0w in june
Read the whole post in full before attempting anything!
redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).
REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.
If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.
GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).
To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

If you put your device in DFU mode in iTunes 8.2, it will auto-download the 3.0 OS... from apple... for free.

Is that part of the jailbreak process (as in, is that automatic) or are you doing that manually? If the latter, then this is also why I'm a little hesitant to upgrade.

You have to do it manually.
The only thing that isn't ready seems to be Backgrounder, wish is a shame, I loved backgrounder... WinterBoard is working fine.

I'm just going to put this here, it's a list of all the apps that work/don't work atm:
To make it easier for people to know what Apps work and which don't, here's a list:
Cydia - Overall, it's pretty buggy, it crashes sometimes, but it works (for the most part)
Winterboard - Works, but the icon gets messed up, and may take the form of another app's icon. Keyboards also do not work, and neither do wallpapers.
Five Icon Dock - Works
FontSwap - Doesn't work
PocketTouch - Doesn't work
Backgrounder - Doesn't work
Categories - Works
Pwnplayer - Doesn't work - Although for some, it works
SbSettings - Works - I would advise not to use the "Respring" on SbSettings. It may just be I'm unlucky, but it froze my iPod. Others have also had this issue, so I strongly advise to not use this function of SbSettings.
SbSettings Addons - They all Work
MxTube - Works
MMP Flip - Is now in Winterboard, and you can turn it on/off. To get it to work, you need to edit the Info.plist, change the <true> to <false> under "unifiedipod" in Info.plist. Some people did not have to do this, but if MMP Flip doesn't work, change what I mentioned. OR Uninstall the MMP Flip package from Cydia. Get "cy.sosiphone.com" source. Search for "MobileMusicPlayer Flip" (NOT MMP Flip) and install it. (Spotlight will not work to start songs anymore)
MakeItMine - Works
CyDelete - Works
iBlank - Works
Five-Column Springboard - Doesn't work
Springjumps - Works
Instinctiv Shuffle - Doesn't work
Bossprefs - Works
dtunes - Works
Memtool - Works
Five-Column Springboard - Doesn't work
5iRow - Doesn't work
Reflective Dock - Works
Offline Maps - Doesn't work
WeatherIcon - Doesn't work
Stacks - Works
Mobile Terminal - Works
GriP - Works
iMobileCinema - Doesn't work
LiveClock - Works - The icon image doesn't change so you'll see the fixed hands drawn.
MobileFinder - Doesn't work - Crashes
StatusNotifier - Doesn't work
Mobile Theatre - Works
WildEyes - Works
gTxtEdit - Works
ScummVM - Works
LockInfo beta - Works
SwapMode - Works
LogoMe - Doesn't work
Scrobble - Doesn't work
Flashlight - Works
Icy - Works
StatusNotifier - Works - The notifications work, the settings app does not
KillSB - Works
iFile - Works - A little buggy
AVPlayer Works
Torrentula - Works
QTweeter - Doesn't work
QuickGold - Doesn't work
BossPrefs - Works
iBlacklist - Works
NemusSync - Doesn't work - Stopped working on it
iComic - Jailbreak version doesn't work
PDAnet - Works
That's all I've gotten so far about what works and what doesn't, comment on this thread and I'll add more to the list!

WeatherIcon is simply broken. It won't update and gives you a nice ? on supported themes. I bet it'll be fixed in a few days.
For Live Clock, just pick another theme. Wallpapers are also working fine, no idea what that guy's going on about.
Not only does MakeItMine work, you should know that the image is saved to your preferences, so a restore on a non-jailbroken iPod will give your MIM title. I was quite surprised by that when just my standard upgrade to 3.0 said "Harp" in the upper left.
Gtkpod doesn't work, even with the old hacks, and that angers me. libgpod really needs to find the hashing algorithm soon...

just a few questions.
1. does the ipod touch need to be unjailbroken to update to 3.0 (as in reverting it back to store bought OS 2.2.1)?
2. do i need the original 3.0 installed on my touch before jailbraking it?
3. why does apple charge for touch OS?

To my knowledge, all you do is DL redsn0w and select the 3.0 OS file and the program does the rest. No need for iTunes or anything.

I haven't DL 3.0 yet, I'm going to try the DL for free from itunes, but I want to know if I need to have it on the nonjailbroken 2.2.1 OS or I can just DL and install 3.0 OS straight to my jailbroken touch then jailbreak that OS.

2. do i need the original 3.0 installed on my touch before jailbraking it? Yes, see above. Just use Shift+Restore, you'll need the IPSW anyway, so... yeah, use Shift+ to restore from an IPSW
3. why does apple charge for touch OS? Because they're greedy, but it's available from Softpedia and a bunch of other places. I can confirm that it's at least a working 3.0

Heh, so I just spent the better portion of 2 hours, modding and installing itunes on xp64, making sure the fucking program would recognize the hardware, and installing my pirated 3.0 software, and then jail breaking the itouch. no biggy
long story short, i've been trying to get maps offline, so i got the GMDT and ran up the files for the area i wanted, and converted them to the files needed for offline maps. i log into the itouch using ssh and copy all of the map files over to where i was supposed to. var/media/maps/etc. cut off wifi, and cue up my city, and there's nothing to be found. go into Offline Maps, select my folder of maps, and then click link, and then closes. i've read that it should say ok before it closes, so i guess it must be cutting out before hand for some reason.
odds are the app install hasn't been updated for 3.0, but i was wondering if anyone else had had a similar experiance.

IPSW [iPod Software], and yes, putting it in DFU mode and pressing Shift+Restore works fine. And for those worried about getting caught "illegally" using 3.0 on their Touch: it's hosted on Softpedia (iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw), not TPB, and no one can tell the difference.

So Bacon, what exactly does backgrounder do for 3gs?
Doesn't push do that already?
But before you say it does it better, I am wondering.
Because like...if I am in a game, and someone calls, it brings me to the title screen of said game. Would backgrounder stop that?
And do you know a work around for getting wb to work for 3.0?
Or do we just needa wait?
klange
July 6th, 2009, 12:35 PM
I'm not sure how Background would work in reference to an incoming call, as I don't know how that works. Basically, it allows to you to go to the Home screen while the application is still running. Some of the Apple apps already work like this, but with apps like Aim, it saves a ton of time waiting for it to login and such. In a game, you can go do other things while the game is still running.

MobileSubstrate changes the way resources are loaded, allowing developers to modify existing applications. WinterBoard uses it, SBSettings uses it, WeatherIcon uses it - virtually everything that isn't a standalone app uses it.

Any advice whether to jump to 3.0 or keep it 2.2.1?

Winterboard obviously.
Get the theme Buuf2 if you can.
Get Blacklist. Its very helpful. It sets certain people not to call you and it can set autoreply texts.
MxTube is a youtube video downloader.
Any emulators are fun.
Categories is good for most people but I dont like it. You just might check it out though.
Get 5 dock too.
I have a question of my own, are there any apps to block calls and make an autoreply for when you are syncing your iphone? That would be great.
