From the moment I heard Microsoft would be licensing Windows 7 to netbook manufacturers, I questioned just how paltry of a hardware (http://www.techspot.com/news/35164-windows-7-installed-on-a-pentium-iibased-pc.html#) setup the OS would run on. Granted, netbooks are nifty devices which have their niche. But between Intel’s Atom CPU and the lack of graphics processing power, the pint-sized package isn’t what I’d imagine to be ideal for Windows 7. As it turns out, my curiosity is far from unique.

Impressively, a member of the Windows Club forum (http://forum.thewindowsclub.com/windows-hardware-devices/28053-windows-7-dinosaur.html#post135619) that goes by the handle of “hackerman1” has gotten Windows 7 to boot on some pretty ancient machines. At the top of the configurations, he installed it on a system packing a 266MHz Pentium II, 128MB of RAM and a 4MB graphics card. After succeeding, he decreased the RAM capacity to 96MB, which also handled 7. His experiment came to a temporary halt after dropping the RAM to 64MB. Hackerman’s fun won’t end there, though. He plans to try and get Windows 7 up and running on a 166MHz Pentium I and 1MB graphics card next.

There is no mention of install or boot times for the Pentium II system, but other forum members have provided the information for a Pentium III PC (http://www.techspot.com/news/35164-windows-7-installed-on-a-pentium-iibased-pc.html#). They say it took the antique system 17 hours to install Microsoft’s latest OS, and a patience-shattering 17 minutes to boot.

I thought the "doom 3 on a voodoo 2 video card" feat was impressive, but this definitely surpasses it. /lol 17min to boot...

I got Halo 1 to work on 128 MB RAM, 400 mhz P2, 8 mb ati rage card. The framerate counter read 0 fps...

not really surprised about the H2V on a geforce 6200 and 512mb ram, as long as you're running it on XP with the wowloader hack the performance is tolerable.

I have an old Laptop with a 133MHZ Intel Processor and 60MB of shared memory, if I can find a hard drive for it bigger then 4GB then I might test W7 on it.

I'm not too surprised to see this actually. It's not too rare to see new software on such old systems, at least, not for me. Heh, not like you can do much with it though :P

I got Halo to run on a box that was just filled with magnetic rocks and a bunch of conductive pieces of shrapnel.

On the topic of Windows 7, that's pretty impressive.

Yeah... got the feeling that Windows 7 will do to Mac OSX what 3.1 did to Mac OS in ~'93. Not to that degree of course, since Steve Jobs is at the helm of Apple (or will be when Windows 7 ships) and because the revolution of "You can choose what you want in your PC" has pretty much died... but still. People will probably be more proud to run Windows.
