If you have ever wanted to see what a life size Gundam mobile suit looks like then here is your chance! Japan went and got themselves the first life-size Gundam ever made. This 60 foot tall Gundam RX-78-2 replica was built by Bandai to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ anime series. I want one. This is only the first step to actually creating a real functional Gundam. That would be very cool. This replica stands over Tokyo Bay’s Odaiba Island, and will be on display during the summer. The thing has the exact proportions and specifications as the Gundam developed for the series. I think think this is pretty awesome. Check out the rest of the photos below and lets us know what you think!

They're cool when they're atleast pretending to be plausible, eg

wh40k has really the only genuinely excusable ones because they aren't infallible and they're not magically as agile as a human and so on
walking robots are fully sick, don't get me wrong, but they would make godawful weapons

never saw the appeal in giant walking robot tank things to be honest, they are literally the most impractical implements of warfare ever to be devised and would get their shit fucking wrecked on a real battlefieldI fucking love you. I really do. Finally someone with the brains to take their head out of their ass and really take a good look at all this. Either get yourself a vehicle or don't; not some dumb bastardization that can't fulfill the tasks of either of the former.
You want me to take it up a notch because you think it would be cool in real life? Okay then. SARCOS, Big Dog, Jetman, the Rocketbelt, and logging Hexapods are cool. A sixty foot statue of a fictional cartoon robot isn't.
In the realm of fiction? Give me Iron Man and Terminator, because you can keep your phony chicken walkers... but I'll tell you what. You want me to endorse a mech? Just one? I'll go for the Powersuit from James Cameron's upcoming Avatar, because for all I know, the man probably put time into designing a serviceable concept before getting Weta to build one animatronically. But that's it, and no more freebees.
don't tell japan.
they think its the best fucking idea ever.
they'll actually do it.And that is why WWII closed the door on efficient Japanese warfare for the next few centuries.
They're cool when they're atleast pretending to be plausible, egA giant, slow-moving metal box with minimal maneuverability and a pair of high-output flamethrowers that slather adhesive, viscous, volatile jelly all of fifteen feet is supposed to be a plausible tactical unit?
I'd rather anime over a thousand Reality TV shows.I'd rather a thousand reality tv shows over anime any day because all the reality shows will be on MTV (which hasn't been worth a fuck since 1993 anyway), I'll no longer go into nigh-catatonic depression every time I think of the words "Cartoon" and "Network", and the legion of talentless, overweight putzes (You know them; the ones who are super nerds yet have low IQs and spend their entire lives locked in their room churning out sketches but still lack the skill to draw a halfway-decent representation of what a human being may possibly look like on paper.) that have the balls to call themselves connoisseurs of Japanese culture will all but disappear. These (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwQqtf86qOc) things (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1DBuFgt_Ug) are (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3f6BOrD9Ek) japanese (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpAgUMUlhw4) culture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72fkuTG-mZ0), not Naruto.
Let me tell you something: The last good anime show to date was Dragon Ball Z, and now that they made it into a shitty movie, even the memory of that is tainted. Apart from that, I'll admit that there are some japanimation specials that I enjoyed (e.g. The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, Tales of the Black Freighter, etc.), but as far as I'm concerned they don't qualify as "anime" because their style is just that: It's only a novelty tint applied to an already quality aesthetic presentation that has a heart and a brain, not the sole substance of the animation itself like you'd find in some cheap manga comic with a cover that you can't even read (whether it's written in Japanese OR English, mind you).
So I herd u liek watch Bleach. And one last thing... can someone PLEASE explain to me why when I type the word "bleach" into wikipedia I get this latest travesty to the world of animation instead of the centuries-old word for aqueous chlorine? If I want to make sure I'm not accidentally using two different chemicals that will combine into a noxious toxin and kill me, I have absolutely no patience when I end up running into this garbage of a cartoon.
Oh hell, what happened to the good ol' days when a kid could turn on the fuckin' television and look forward to Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men, and Spider-Man on Saturday mornings? Well, it went the way of the dodo, Waffle Crisp, and decent music, that's what.

I agree with you on everything but this, this is such an extremely ignorant statement that I basically want to punch through this computer and hit you right in the fucking jugular. A lot of cartoonist and animators have spent their lives work on this stuff and a shit load of them actually have to learn life drawing, you know, having to realistically draw a human figure. These days the high paying animation jobs require great schooling and a huge understanding of styles and art, and to do proper animation is a skill unto itself if done the traditional way. Also an fyi, a lot of artists are actually intelligent beings who care for the planet and live healthy lives, and its been proven that they have better sexual relationships then any other person with another kind of job or hobby. I am starting to think you are just like Rorschach, with a negative view on everything in the world, and in the end it will be your undoing, a theme in his personality is that his mask is black and white, and that is just how he sees everything, black of white....when there are a million shades of gray. People focus so much on the negative and what is wrong and not focusing on the positive and how to make that one good point stronger....we try to fix the negatives, and then forget about that positive, and it gets malnourished and just becomes another negative. People need to start being thankful for what they have in their lives and make the best of the bad, maybe then we can start to improve.

I like anime, but I'm no fan. I used to be.
Rossmum, what makes you think Mechs are unfeasible as war machines? I just want to know what your points are (reasons, etc.).
I've always said that its not a giant walking robot, its a giant walking target. Anything as tall as a 4 story building is just asking to be shot at. There is nothing to hide behind! There's a reason why the M1 Abram has no bottom side escape hatch, its to provide a lower profile, able to hide behind high walls, hedges, and other scenery. Some people have told me that being so big, a Mech could carry a lot of armor. It would certainly need it, if there's nothing to hide behind. When Tanks first rolled onto the battlefield, people thought that they would be the king of the battlefield, rolling down at an enemy position and just shrugging off enemy fire. When they tried this, the tanks got torn to pieces.
No invention will ever be king of the battlefield, so long as there are enemy soldiers with no other option than to develop a counter solution. On the battlefield, a new type of armor is not going to stop bullets for long. The enemy will always find a way to get around the armor and kill the wearer. If you're getting shot at and your shots don't do anything to the person shooting at you, you might as well lay down and die. Because there is no point in being on the battlefield with that kind of power, you have no choice but to develop a counter to the armor. There will always be clever, ingenuitive enemies out there that will find a way to get around said armor. This is called battlefield Evolution.
So, for the most part, I agree with rossmum.

Actually, spending money on something like this is a good thing. Someone had to build it, someone had to provide all the metal/plastic/whatever. Those people got paid, and the people doing the paying could afford to do it. The end result is the employees of the people making it got their paycheck and can afford to feed their families.
Welcome to Economics 101.

Good, you shouldn't. The reason we're in this position is because people like yourself couldn't afford things they were buying. That's not the case for this: the people manufacturing this didn't pay for it on some ridiculous loan they could never pay off. Failed mortgages brought us here, not unnecessary spending.

My family is in relatively low debt, I'm not sure what you mean by "people like yourself."
And building a 60 foot statue does nothing in the way of creating long term jobs. Maybe a 2 man cleaning crew, that's it. Spending money does not necessarily create jobs.

I meant "just regular people". Corporations, despite their current stupidity, weren't the end cause of the situation (though the banking firms definitely hold a lot of blame).
It's not about long term jobs.

My point seems to have gone over your head, you're discussing the economics of the situation, and I'm saying the product of the effort is fucking stupid. I'm sure that, for the same amount of money, the japanese could have built a fucking park, or something that would benefit the society in some way. If money HAS to be spent, it should atleast go to something useful. Say if a library was built, all the people involved would get paid, but you see it contribute back. How is a god damn statue of a gundam going to contribute back? It's not.

Well then you're ignorant and a hypocrite, because there a huge fucking post on the previous page with you baaawwing and bitchin over cartoon network, artists, gundams being feasible, in fact, all you seem to do is complain about the world or trash other people, go take a look at yourself and stop trying to act well informed in all the issues by associating well known people with anomymous people on the internet you have no clue about. :)
Just a piece of advice.
