Alright, so here's what I'm trying to do: Convert my 4.41GB .Mkv into <4GB .AVI (or WMV/MPEG4, whatever is easier.)
It's 720p and I'd like to keep it at the resolution.
I'm trying to get it to playback on my Xbox 360, but it only detects FAT32 flash drives. Which, also don't allow you to transfer files >4GB onto them.

I've been successful in converting the .mkv into a .avi (keeping audio/video in sync but the file size remains 4.41GB.)

I used mkvextractGUI to demux the .mkv.
avc2avi to convert the .h264 into an .avi.
I remuxed the .avi with the .dts in AVI-MUX GUI. The results are exactly what I need, just at a too large file size.

If there are other methods of getting the file to play on my 360, I'm all ears.

I did try streaming with Zune software, but since it's .avi and not .wmv it won't even load into the software.

Thanks again for reading!

I'm pretty sure Xbox 360's only use dvix avi's. I didn't know there was a limit on the filetype though.

I know they only use AVI's, that's why I need help converting .MKV to an .AVI but keeping it under 4GB. The 360 could play the 4.41GB file, but FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB, so there in lies my problem...

Super C video converter, try it.

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

It's free and will convert anything to anything and you can choose all your bitrates and such (so you can keep your resolution, or lose a little bit to save space.. and.. yar)

This is my first tutorial
This tutorial shows you how to watch MKV files on your 360. This is by far the easiest way i have come across
Step one download

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=60NHJNU3
Password:danhann9@xbox360iso

Extract files to your hard drive.
From the folder run XenonMKV.exe
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5551/13580877.gif (http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=13580877.gif)

Press ok if it asks you to download a file.

Once the application has loaded select your .MKV file
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2444/52530583.gif (http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=52530583.gif)

Also select where you want the file to be outputted

Before we start we need to change the file extension. The default output is mp4 but this didnt work when i tried it on my 360.

Press the options button

Select the "last steps" tab

check the box that says rename the file extension after processing
in the box type avi
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8205/70679249.gif (http://img21.imageshack.us/my.php?image=70679249.gif)

then click save settings.

Then with the settings saved click start.

After a while it will output a file to your chosen destination. You can then steam this file over your network to your xbox.

If the MKV file is bigger than 4GB it will split the file. This is because the xbox will not play files bigger than 4GB

Any questions please post them here.

Thanks.

Tested and works. Btw, it's not my tutorial, it's from another forum I visit.

Thanks for the help guys, but I figured it out.
@ Saggy, the Rapidshare/Megaupload file is gone.
@ FAB, thanks but still keeps it at 4GB+.

I feel so stupid, but AVI-MUX GUI offers a file splitting process at a given MB. *Doh*

Oops, don't know why it linked to rapidshare... fixed now.

Why not convert to avi/Xvid and then stream? :-/

No need to put it on an external drive if you can bypass the filesize limit all together.

The Zune software only supports wmv, but you can do it right through Windows Media Player (or Windows Vista/7's "Media Sharing").

I already did that Jcap, but the filesize limit, heh.
I tried streaming, but as you know Zune only supports .WMV. I couldn't get WMP to stream.
But I got AVI-MUX to split it into smaller chunks so I got it to work. Thought it wasn't Xvid so it didn't work.
I could try Vuze though, I've heard that works really well.

Have you tried the tutorial I posted yet?? I fixed the download link now so everything should be ok.
