That wasn't the point. :P As clarified earlier in this long discussion thread, the movie was much more about the visual accomplishments than it was the generic story.
the visuals were stunning.

still a meh for me though...

Yeah. Story? Not awesome. Visuals? Awesome.I actually really liked the story -- not so much the plot -- and definitely not the dialogue... but the higher level you go -- the better it is.

I knew what the plot was going to be in its most general sense, but I really liked the little stuff- the story about the Avatars, the ecology of Pandora, the specific characters. Sure, some of the dialogue was a little weak, but I hnestly didn't care that much.

It and District 9 are both nominated for Best Picture, just so you know. Then again, so was that piece of garbage "Up"...

Wait a minute, how is it Up gets nominated for Best Picture and The Road doesn't? In fact, why is The Road not nominated for anything? It deserves to at least win Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, and most certainly Best Cinematography, and it wasn't nominated for a damn thing. While I'm on the subject of Oscars for the moment, George Clooney has to stop getting nominations for recycling the same character for all his movies.

Getting back to Avatar, though, I thought it was a great movie, a monumental achievement, and an awe-inspiring spectacle, and I'm glad it got nine nominations (probably didn't deserve a few of them, but I'm glad it got recognition anyway), and I hope it walks away with a few wins outside the technical field also. Same basic sentiment for District 9, only MUCH more diluted. That being said... as far as movies go, The Hurt Locker and The Road not only were able to hold their own with Avatar for a fraction of the budget, but in many respects were more evocative than Avatar.

I agree completely. Its just that its not really a movie that appeals to mass audiences. It shows a much less glamorous kind of apocalypse. The Book of Eli for instance, is the type that appeals much more. Viggo Mortenson (sp?) was fantastic though.

I thought Hurt Locker was ok, I know this guy who just got back from Iraq (he also had a lot of experience with disarming IEDs) and he told me the movie was a piece a shit. Apparently it's nothing close to what it's really like over there.

I'm not saying I didn't, just that it could be criticized for having been done before (the Dances-With-Wolves plotline, not the Na'Vi/Avatar stuff).

.

While The Hurt Locker was a pretty cool action movie, it in no way represents the EOD corps (which is actually really small) and its members. The fucking film is just a movie length recruitment video for the military. Don't fall for this propaganda.

Yeah, well most movies that get Oscar nominations don't appeal to the mass audience, mostly just the objectively dedicated and cinema-buff types. To quote Christian Slater talking with Saul Rubinek in True Romance, they're "unwatchable movies based off unreadable books". The rest of the world, who is busy in the theater watching Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich movies for the explosions and then complaining about it after the credits for being mindless action, only picks up on or realizes that the movie exists until after the fact, when it's already up for consideration. Hell, critical acclaim is usually half the advertisement that the movies that end up scoring big in the Oscars get. Otherwise, the casual audience isn't going to the theater to ponder over the sociopolitical metaphors in the abstract foreground of a post-modern, avant-garde piece of arthouse swill. Anyone who's seen the Onion Movie knows exactly which scene I'm thinking of right now. If not, sorry, it ain't on Youtube.

Its worth it...take it from someone who is suspicious of any popular movie ever since watching Napoleon Dynamite. Biggest waste of time ever. Avatar, however, was great.

My parents offered me to go see this with them during our Christmas Break. I didn't really believe the hype before I saw the sales and my classmates' response to this movie. That night, I instead chose to productively work on a college admission supplement.

That's right, you heard me. My parents offered me to go watch this movie with them.... in 3D... and I effectively denied. I have not watched this movie yet.

........ I denied the opportunity to watch this movie.

.............. Denied.
