Ok, so here's the story. A few days ago I purchased a fan to exhaust air out of my computer because it was getting a touch bit warm. Nothing major though. So I'm not worried about that. But after that day, I fixed up another one of my fans. So I had a total of five fans running in my computer. Didn't think it was a big deal. After having everything hooked up for a while, I started noticing my computer lagging horribly and programs were randomly freezing. A problem I've never had... Then today I was here on Modacity. And firefox froze again. But this time, instead of it recovering like it usually did. I got something along the lines of "Instructions at 0x7662e920...Blah...Required data not placed in memor... Blah... I/O Error". My bottom taskbar was gone, and the only thing open was Firefox. So then I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del for the task manager, and then I get "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog." So I'm like "Ugh..." and I restart my computer. Well then suddenly I'm getting boot errors and it's not recognizing my hdd. So I restart several times, and still nothing. But I can feel the HDD spinning a bit and making some clicking sounds. Of course, my first thought was that the HDD was dying on me. But then I unplugged three of my fans, and suddenly everything booted up. But as I type right now, my monitor seems very, very dim, compared to the brightness and usual quality. I know it's not the monitor because I can still adjust the brightness and what not and it all looks ok.

So I guess my major question is... Is it the Power supply (450W Maximum 'Whatever that means')? Or is something else being dumb. My money is on the power supply, but I wanted a second opinion.

From the little experience I have with these things, it seems like you over-taxed the power supply.

If removing the fans makes things work, it makes sense that your PSU is having issues. On top of that, an overstressed PSU can show degraded output under normal conditions.

I guess then my question would be, what would be a reasonable amount of wattage for a new power supply?

What I find odd is that, your PSU cannot handle it, My 480w PSU is supporting my pc containing 2 HD's, a DVD drive, My HD 4870, a 8400gs, a TV Tuner, 3 fans, and a second sound card, With atleast 6 usb items plugged in, with triple video output.
E: also, my 450w cheapo power supply supported it with the same but 2 fans, 1 output, and no 8400, it blew out, but that was because it was cheapo >:U
AVG life for it was 3 months and I got 5 so im good :P

I wouldn't find it so odd. Lol. This power supply could honestly just be dying. I've had to put a fan from an old power supply in this one because the old one died.
