View Full Version : Fucking steam!!

Whenever I play a game on steam, the frames will randomly just skip, it amounts to the same thing as lagging, things will stop in one place and twitch for a fraction of a second then jump forward about 50 feet to another spot, thing is, I have 5-35 ping on these freaking servers. I am guessing its the fps, but I am playing on servers and games where I have never had an fps problem before. I am not running any new programs or things that I am aware of, and looking in processes tabs, the only things taking up much memory are steam and xfire, but xfire has never affected it before. So is anyone else getting this, or am I the only one, and if so, how could I possibly fix it?

Restart your pc every time you begin too lag, I have to do it too, about every hour.

Yeah, but then what's the point in playing these games, that's just a pain in the ass, so I am guessing it is steam...if so they need to get their ass on this pronto if it's a widespread problem.

Its an isolated incident. Find out what you two have in common because it happens to none of my people irl.
Idk about the rest of the forum though.

I never had this problem on my old computer or my new one so I don't know.
Old computer only got about 15-30 FPS but I never encountered this skipping you speak of

It's not that much of an isolated incident. I used to have that happen with halo. The only fix that I ever got was a totally fresh OS install. I tried driver upgrades/downgrades, re-installation of halo and other programs, hardware checks, etc.
This was just me though. If you don't give that much of a shit just restart the compy every time you go to play.

steam or any game on it has never given me any problems.

I've got a similar issue...games run perfectly smooth for 10-15 minutes and then I get fps lag and stutter, and then it resumes normally. It started doing this about a month ago. I'd say I'm running out of RAM if I were running a lot of background apps and not playing old games, but I am not running many apps and am playing old games.

Yes, it seems there are a lot of people getting this, and tbh I think it has something to do with steam, I posted a topic in the support site, but idk how much help I will get.

The problem is found...but not the solution, also it is completely widespread, and seems to be steams update working with OS's.

I am going to go into safe mode with internet and run tf2 and see if it truly is steam causing the problem.

Steam is fine.

Apparently not that widespread, considering most of us here haven't encountered it.
Try the usual things like updating drivers (all of them - northbridge, etc., not just graphics), installing the latest version of directX, etc. Check and see what's running in the background and if you have anything that eats up massive amounts of CPU time or RAM, kill it.
Alt-tabbing will usually cause some minor skipping on my system, but all I need to do is relaunch the app to fix it.

Legion, go read the thread I linked to, don't be a freelancer, oh yeah I went there
it is a steam update problem with certain comps, updating drivers did not work.
Edit-http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=907230
Seems switching resolutions a few times fixed the problem for this guy?

xp (32 bit).
Like I said earlier, the only solution is a fresh install.
Would you be so kindest as to provide your system specs for me to om nom nom?
I'd like to see if there are any similarities...

Never had any problems with any windows OS's.
Its all user error.

I'm getting the issue in non-Steam games as well. Doesn't mean it isn't Steam, just thought I'd throw that out there.

No its affecting me in non steam games, but stemmed out from steam games. I am currently running windows xp, so I guess I will try another OS, or just dig up the old disks for it.

Teek, some of us have machines that would work at a snails pace in Windows 7 regardless of its superiority to both Vista and XP...

Also the majority of people having problems with this are windows 7 users. Anyways I don't even know if I have my old windows xp disks, so I might have to get something else.

A quick question, with everyone who is having (had) this problem, are any of yall using nvidia cards?
Rook
June 30th, 2009, 03:34 PM
I got Win7 64 bit and I'm fine, however the graphics card is an ATi 4850.

Yeah, apparently steam isnt supporting any problems with windows 7, so I won't use that anyways, Defragging and verifying did not work, just direct runtimes, going ingame to see if there's any difference.

I actually am using an nVidia card, GeForce 7800GT, check my PC specs tab. I just updated drivers from 91.84 to whatever the newest one is (186.18 I think for GeForce 7 cards), will report back later with performance changes, if any.

Direct x runtimes did nothing also.

I guess I'll let you know that I'm using Windows 7 64bit and I don't have any stutterting (and I'm also an nvidia user).
Hey after you restart, did you try playing a game that's not from Steam?

I used to get that in TF2, then it stopped after the next couple nvidia driver updates. Good thing I wasn't a big TF2 player back then d:

I guess I will try updating my drivers AGAIN. Yeah I am totally addicted to TF2, play at least 7 hours a day.

I get lots of memory leaks...only way I solve it is rebooting, and you'll probably get 2 hours of gameplay before having too.

Ok, so the updated drivers kind of fixed it, it only gives me an issue once it gets really hot now instead of all the time...also a nice 50+ fps boost in Battlezone II...:iamafag:.

I get this issue too, but my computer is decently old and I have wireless internet.

Well that's what we have in common, my comp is a old piece of shit too.
Also memory leaks you say needles, go google possible fixes on that, maybe its what we have. Also updating the drivers also helped, but did not entirely fix, I can now snipe again though.

Also, I'm not getting memory leaks, it's just a lag spike...doesn't happen with Steam off.
