well my last windows XP capable computer is now dead, which is funny cause i haven't touched it in a few months and the only people who HAVE are my psychotic bitch of a sister and my obese 8 year old little brother...

i'm getting a "illegal boot operation" message and the start-up being halted...

is there ANYWAY that i can get it running again WITHOUT having to format?

dump xp cd, boot up, and let the auto repair do its thing.

should be fine. if not, you can grab a linux live cd, and repair the registry or system files yourself.

Not all machines look at the cd-rom before the hard drive when booting. If this is the case you will need to change the boot order in your bios. If you've worked with your bios before this should be easy but if you haven't you'll want to be careful. When your machine is just booting up you will have the option to enter the bios/setup. The particular key you will have to press at the moment escapes me but may be different across different computers, etc. I think it will either be f8 or f12 but if you see a message saying something different while it just turns on try that instead of course.

that was the first thing i tried, it won't let my boot from anything other than the floppy dick drive, the HDD, and something called the "intel boot agent"

my sister owes me a shit load of money, this is the SECOND hard drvie she has broken and won't compensate for it

did you set the bios to cd first, or did you just try hitting the keys? gotta throw out some details here man.

Sounds like either a blown BIOS or blown HDD to me...try a new HDD in there.

...how the hell am i doing that...i was being as calm as possible, there were NO insults being directed at me yet you took offense somehow and atnon gave me -rep cause of it...you guys need to lighten up, if i offended you then tell me, but if you think i purposely went out of my way to make you feel bad then you read too much into things

good day and this is locked, and any retaliation rep i WILL report as such

thank you and good day

EDIT:

and the most basic thing to do when tryin to fix a computer that seems to be dead is reinstall, always assume someone tried it coja
