And another thing, honestly why keep lingering on past gen games anyways phase? Seriously, a good way to expand on your modelling skills is to move on to better things like source and such that can take the 9-10 thousand tricounts. You could damn near model all the battle damage into the thing with that much stuff to toss around, but it would take an experianced modeller to do so. I think it's good that Penguin can move on from the silly tricounts of halo 1. Realize that games coming out, the ones that penguin will most likely be part of developing, require the skill to make a detailed 7-8 thousand tri count object. And I don't want to hear none of that pussy texture shit. I read up just awhile ago on the crysis engine that it would be more worthwile to model the details on then use higher res textures, normal maps, etc. Believe it or not, those create lag too. Games are being geared towards higher tricounts. Embrace it.

That's very true.When normal mapping, etc was introduced to gaming, it was very useful in improving performance. But now, along with a normal map, there are spec maps, occlusion maps, color maps, diffuse maps, alpha maps, detail maps, and whatever else. All those layered effects will take up a lot of energy if the normal map has to calculate all of the normals to create that effect. in higher quality games its better to just model in those purdy little details.

I've already started over. i got a new reference. It was a play around model. i made it from what i thought would be cool. not everything has to be exact. and Halo is in the future.

I think personally that it looks like shit. If your going to overlay 2 images together, do it properly, I can see edges of the images overlayed. Also, the generic text doesn't help either.

Yes. He was a noob once. Do you think he posted all his noob work and proclaimed it to be the greatest pieces of artwork ever? No. If you post it, you open yourself to criticism. If you don't like it, then go fuck a lamp.

And yes, skill does appear out of thin air. In about 3 days I learned plane modeling from Snaf. I went from modeling 30 triangle boxes with photo textures poorly slapped on to them to making this:

I'm now in the process of actually UVW mapping it now. All because I asked for help. Maybe instead of being a pussy and asking for mercy you should fess up to the fact that you aren't king shit on turd island and ask for some help. Hell, go on google and look for a tutorial if you've pissed off all the senior modelers.

It really isn't this complicated.

P.S. That gun of yours looks like you got bored half way through modeling an MP5 and decided to drag the front down for the hell of it. There are tons of errors on it too. Looks pretty gross to me.

Thanks but no. I just deciedto not make it cuase i already realized it's shape wasn't correct. so i am deciding to go back to biped's and level design. weapons are just not my thing;,. It was sorta something i came up with in my head it turned out to be something different in the end.

And I realzie that when I post work it will be subject to criticism, but I don't appreciate insults. Criticism would be like "you're missing this part" or "the sight is backwards." But gime a break. While I agree, it actually takes a while to get it to look right. Try it and you'll see. :)

It's an accurate representation of the real life version, so I don't see what the big deal is. Sure, not very hard to get to look right, but when it looks right... Sure, as a demonstration of modeling vcapablities, it's not very impressive, but as art, I think it looks pretty good..

no it couldn't because that would require more sides, unnecessary sides at that. not to mention you hardly see that part of the gun in the fp view anyway.

look at everyone's work here. does anyone post abmiguous part of their work? no. please, work on your models until they're recognizable, then post them.

also, that box modeled object looks like it's most likely out of proportion and poorly done. i'm not aware of any stock that looks like that. look for plane modeling tutorials.

for one, it's not art work it's for the game that would be the reason we're posting these in a GAMING forum.

as rentafence said the mauser is an automatic pistol and a stock on a pistol allows for better accuracy which is why tac. teams use it.

completely false. pistols produce as much as 30 degrees of muzzle flip. pistols are a multi-faceted weapon, and can fullfil more than the role of a simple sidearm. if you look again, the pistols are about 2x the length. given a pistols small dimensions, they're certainly not "big as hell". addressing the weight issue, the stocks for the mauser pistols are HOLLOW to allow storage of the weapon itself, and the modern pistol's stock is made of a lightweight material.

This is really my first model in maya. I am using the halo 2 chief as a reference, but I am going to make this custom. Right now I am refining the modeling, not adding details.

i usually look at tons of wireframes of other peoples bipeds to see how they modeled parts, like feet or hands. It's a great way to learn how to do bipeds CORRECTLY.

srslytho, it worked pretty well for me to just head right in and learn as I went. And while I'm on the subject, I'll say that I still have a ridiculous amount left to learn.

Next up on my list to update: the support mg. Just a few minor tweaks, nothing large. Then, after than, im going to touch up my SMG, and then redo my pistol. Then, im going to design a new RL as the old design would have gotten into copyright issues (the concept that scoob did was extremely similar to a released mod's rl)

So, atm, i have 2/6 weapon models done to a satisfactory level, and 4/6 models started.

I like it a lot, but it could use a little bit of loving on all of the cylindrical parts, they are so low poly it degrades the look of the whole model. Same on the Sniper scope like Boobieman pointed out.

And another thing, honestly why keep lingering on past gen games anyways phase? Seriously, a good way to expand on your modelling skills is to move on to better things like source and such that can take the 9-10 thousand tricounts. You could damn near model all the battle damage into the thing with that much stuff to toss around, but it would take an experianced modeller to do so. I think it's good that Penguin can move on from the silly tricounts of halo 1. Realize that games coming out, the ones that penguin will most likely be part of developing, require the skill to make a detailed 7-8 thousand tri count object. And I don't want to hear none of that pussy texture shit. I read up just awhile ago on the crysis engine that it would be more worthwile to model the details on then use higher res textures, normal maps, etc. Believe it or not, those create lag too. Games are being geared towards higher tricounts. Embrace it.

Is itr possible to get better results than what I have from box modeling, though?

How many people have tried modeling imaginary weapons? Not saying my modeling is anywhere near most people's here, bt Im just curious.

not really, sorta. but no. here's your first mistake, YOU'RE USING MILKSHAPE! there are amazing modelers out there who have the skill and enough knowledge of it to make good stuff with it. but you on the other hand do not. so, go download gmax and start practicing.

Uhm, Im actually not using Milkshape. Wings3D is a TON better than milkshape.

I tried GMAX and the camera rotation feels really wierd.

Practice more. A lot more. Even if your gun doesn't exist, use refs of other guns to show what various parts typically look like.

the only weapons ive ever modeled are all imaginary, and every single one of them is drawn up and created entirely by myself. And look at what i'm able to do :lol:

Not that your tank pic doesn't signifiy modeling capablities 10 times as good as mine, but it's missing those bumpy things on the treads that give it traction..


The point is I suck, but not as much as some of you think I do. Try modleing something off the top of your head with no reference pic at all.

They generally have some idea of what it is before they make it. They just don't devise it as the creation process goes along...

20 minutes should have made alot more than that. Honestly, i already see a ton of smoothing errors, and it looks like a high-poly model for something as simple as a box with a few vertice moves and extrusions. My advice is delete opera, start over with Gmax, and try again.
