You do realize the one kenney's making looks like its just based on the one on the SII was holding. The old one looked like it was based on the one the SIII was holding
As far as I'm concerned, CMT's MA5K rifles are only true to the cover in the academic sense: they're carbines with an ambiguous shade of gunmetal that were being wielded by Spartans.
Other than that, true resemblances are null. If you truly examine the structure and detail of the MA5K's in the high-res scans, it's just an MA5B with the electronics housing and lengthened foregrip removed. In their stead, a [rail that clips onto the rifle at the edge of the stock in front and the foreface of the comb at the back] and various auxiliary grips were added respectively. The only other difference between the MA5K and the Assault Rifle featured in H1 is that the former's muzzle has a vent on both sides.
In closing, the bolt's arm and tab should be no different than that of the MA5B or MA5C, and the bolt itself should not be located on the comb but immediately under the rear anchor of the rail. Edit: Oh yeah, I found it. I was almost positive there was one there, but my main reference was just a promotional pic and not the final ingame product... and considering I've played the game about once for ten minutes in the past four months I couldn't trust my memory to it, anyway.

Cant really give real criticism until you think its done. Besides the front grip and few smoothing errors in the back grip, it looks pretty good.

Those 2 vids show all the workflow/ui stuff that really helps when working in max, those 2 vids really really helped me with my modeling. You already have a modeling method that works for you, but hell, they will give you a little insight on plane modeling if you don't already know.

I only model with Wings. You can do pseudo-plane-modeling in Wings, but it takes a lot of practice with the concepts behind it... I'll write a tutorial when I get time, because I get asked how to do this a lot. I had to teach myself, basically.
The premise is to set up an image plane of that which you wish to plane model, move it back in the X-axis about 50 units, and Scale>Uniform your image until it's absolutely ginormous. Now lock your image plane so you can't select it. Now change your viewing mode to Orthographic and view down the X-axis (Default Hotkey "X"). Create>Cube, and select the face facing you. Press "F" or "+" once to select the four attached faces, and use Face>Dissolve to leave yourself with only one face. Then select the body of your plane and Body>Auto-Smooth it to give it all hard edges. You can then use this plane to make the basic shape of the part you are modeling by cutting the edges and moving the verticies freely while you are viewing down the x-axis (Tip: I made "T" a hotkey for both Edge>Cut>2 and Vertex>Move>Free; note, however, if you decide to do this, that the Turn plugin sets your "T" hotkey to Edge>Turn whenever you restart Wings. To get around this, either turn of the Turn plugin when you aren't using it or use another hotkey). Once you've made the basic shape, you can select one of the faces and Face>Extrude>Normal to make your primitive. There are more advanced things you can do with this, but this makes up the general idea.

Whole thing is like a weeks work so far, not far off being finished either. I just finished the ground terrain and unwrapping the cliffs today. This is just to get my head around max and the editing kit. I can stuff this map up first, then get my proper map (Retina) ingame much easier, with less fuck ups along the way, considering it has alot more shaders and textures and hard stuff to deal with.
Btw, the map is not tilted in favor, it's just the perspective angle I have it at, for those of you confuzzled. Right now the whole map including the bases is 8000 triangles.

Well i dunno how you do it in Max, but Maya it was:
Nurbs > draw outside perimeter line of the ground, about 20 seconds.
Convert to poly, it becomes a plane.
tessellate to fuck.
Sculpt tool, interchange between heighten and lower, changing the softness and size, start sculpting the geometry like clay (similar to zbrush and mudbox, but less accurate settings). 1 hour.
Extrude the cliffs upwards from the outer perimeter.
Tessellate to fuck.
Sculpt tool again. 30 minutes.
Select the whole model. Reduce poly (till desired ratio of poly amount - detail)
Walah.
Oh sever, this is a test map, to learn the hek. I really couldn't be fucked varying the cliff geometry, therefore making unwrapping all the more of a hassle.

I fully understood that it was a test map. I know that you care less about the cliffs and terrain than the fact that it will be a completed and running map, and that you will have the HEK experience. I'm just saying this about all maps in general. Even Blood Gulch and Danger Canyon are way to simple and unnatural for my tastes. I hope to get some awesome cliff modeling NOT using the displace method done in a few weeks.

Notice how the back and the handle have more a more smooth and curved look, while yours looks blocky and has chamfered edges.

Nope, those are baked lighting and bumps. I'm sure scooby will tell you himself. If they aren't then, those are the worst bumps I've ever seen.

Actually it can't possibly be better than it did when he was part of UMT, other than the improvements he himself did since then. We didn't do anything with the BSP anyway, it was all Massacre's project.
Also, D4NO, why do you have to be so ignorant to others? There ARE other people outside of CMT that have skillz, just because they aren't in CMT doesn't mean they suck.

back on topic:
it looks pretty good, Massacre. Although the ceiling in your render is flat and somewhat bland and boring. try spicing things up with gruves and shit. and the floor looks ok, but with everything else having a much smoother and rounded look, i would only expect the floor to have the same flow. so round off the corners of those squares a bit (45 degree angles at least).
other than that, great work! it's comming along very nicely. :]

Some of CMT's BSP's are taken from other maps. For example, Snow Grove was really Grove_Final before they took it. I have no idea who modeled Grove_Final - it might be a CMT member. But from what I've heard, Tensity is their only original BSP. I might be wrong about that tho. Any CMT member want to clear that up?
I'm pretty sure Arteen made Grove Final...

Or [shot], if the image is fairly large (over 800x600). [wshot] is better for wide images - it preserves the aspect ratio to some extent.

This BSP is a work in progress of mine, it was oringinally going to be a UMT map but following my "resignation" I don't know where it's future lies.

The only UMT thing I EVER posted on anywhere besides the UMT forums that was ripped in any way was the UMT ATV, and I gave full credit to KiLLa for it (And I STILL got ripped to shreds).
Deep did rip from Halo 2, and I'm not to get involved with that, but I NEVER rip anything that is related to mapping teams without:
A. Never having it become public and sitting on my Hard Drive for all eternity.
B. Giving full credit where it is due.

I tried. It was going to be my first gun I ever got into Halo before. I made it in Blender and I did not know the rules of Halo at the time. When I brought it into 3DS Max to animate and skin, it had way too many polies and errors. If I were to remodel it now, I would be able to get it in game. I might do that. I even have laser tags made, WITH sound effects.

I have 3 color lights all casting shadow, and a spotlight thats blasting pure white. In previous renders they looked odd because the shadows cast were standard Shadow and not mental ray .
Jesus Christ, that gun is amazing. How did you do that bump effect on the grip?
I made a highres mesh of a sphere cut in half and flattened that i Arrayed, laid a plane under it, rendered to texture at 512 to get a normal map with bumps, and then i box uved the grip/buttstock and applied the bump.

theres nothing wrong with the rail. If you're talking about the missing polies on the bottom, remember that this isnt a viewmodel but a highres mesh. i just deleted it because i knew i wasnt going to add detail there.
Also, im probably gonna delete it on the lowres FP as well, because there will be no chances whatsoever that you'll be able to see those polies in FP.

It's still renders so It's only base maps no detail maps yet. Once I get it all done, rather than using that suck tutorial map to learn with imma learn with this one, considering it's very basic and won't require many shaders and such, but not so basic that it fails. I still want people to play it, though maps rarely ever get played these days unless they have nukes or CMT weapons in them.

D4NO, is this map going to have lots of tunnels or is it mostly outdoor?

I made a highres mesh of a sphere cut in half and flattened that i Arrayed, laid a plane under it, rendered to texture at 512 to get a normal map with bumps, and then i box uved the grip/buttstock and applied the bump.
O.o i wonder who first taught you the basics for that??? :]
btw, looks quite amazing. you sure have come a LONG way from my original design. GEEZ!! i love it though. the scope is very cool, as well as the barrel. great work so far.

yeah, but i just meshsmoothed it afterwards because im lazy. Shoulda used nurbs :D
Every area where there's still triangles are places where there's just no detail anyways, so i didnt even bother cleaning up the mesh. Its served its purpose.

YOINK! update time. I took some time today and finished unwrapping the main gun. I was then able to bake the normals to the gun, and even though there are still errors on the normal map, its looking damn good.

After i finish cleaning up some of the more time consuming things to fix in PS by messing with the low res cage a bit, im going to render the normal map at 4096x4096. It comes without AA, so when i scale it down it should also blend some of the edges a bit. For everything else, i can fix it up in PS.

The location of the magazine makes it look like it'd have a really low capacity, with the caliber it appears to be, and fire through a submachine-gun like length of barrel, the stock looks like it would collapse right into the firing mechanism, and the rail still doesn't look like it can hold shit. Also, not entirely fond of the pattern on the barrel. Am I the only one who doesn't really like this thing? :(

lol silly nub. The bullets do not go straight up, they go back, loop around INTO the firing mechanism, and then are chambered and fired, with cartridges being expelled from the side. The stock does not fully collapse into the weapon as that would be silly, but can be adjusted for different users, or if you're rambo, easier one handed use.
Do you really doubt the power of magnets? my dad has some twist knob magnets that are holding 200 lbs of overstacked wood against a wall. He trusts those magnets so much that he parks his acura TL in front of it.

Well, personally all the forerunner stuff is the same sort of style, it all uses the same kinds of lines and same angles into each other, but I think the style evolves as the civilization grows. Just like we have Egyptian and all that, they had different styles of that stuff. Realistically, it's not all forerunner style. Forerunners are just the race that we call them. Back in those days in the halo story line, that style would have had a specific name, to the forerunners, maybe different clans or time periods. Who knows. The halo 3 stuff looks like a more recent forerunner style.

@Exam: I'm glad to hear someone going against the bandwagon. I personally like the gun, but I do agree with you that some parts of it seem silly, but come on, it's realistic enough that it could work, and the point by now is to make it look really, really cool. But I guess you can't win them all.
@Dane: Dude, that inspires me to continue working on my forerunner map. With your textures on it, it could be friggin amazing.

Damn, you model quickly. Also, some details like the cylinders (screws) on the barrel, things that dont pop out that far, can be done in a normal map. But hey, if you've got the tris, use em!

It's just a fluted barrel, they're not that uncommon on precision weapons...
Looks kinda oppositely fluted to me, kind of a pillowy look.

Only just started the amour bitmaps, that biped has 3 different amour bitmaps that make it up so it's only partly finished. Anything white/dark gray isn't finished and some parts are only just bump maps at this point..

You have no sense of scale because there is nothing in the scene to refer to. Brutes aren't short and fat, but they're not tall and thin. They're tall and bulky. If you seen MC in the scene you'd see.

The models aren't all that great, but I'm not one to talk, cause I can't model bipeds to save my life. But yah, dang, the skin looks like it's comin along pretty well. That, plus the animations, could take that model from meh to :awesome:. Who's gonna animate it? Also, you say bumps- is this for H2V then?

i just took the bent bridge idea from it, and the big thingys above it a bit.
that's where similarities end tbh.
it's like 3/4 times as large as narrows.
it's a must-have vehicle-map really. no shortcuts for people on foot, but seperate paths, with similar perils :o

you dont need vehicles, you can walk too. just takes a bit longer.
my point was, this map can't really go without vehicles, due to it's size.
i can guarante you it won't be everyone runnning to the warthogs when a game starts.
should propably start betatesting in not too long from now, since the model is nearly complete.
ill yell when that time comes though.
