Non-Billy Mays Version:
I don't think I ever saw a thread about this, but even if there was, let this be a reminder for the less wealthy people here (or even news to those with lives): You can buy Windows 7 upgrades at Newegg (http://promotions.newegg.com/Microsoft/Windows7/PreSale/index.html?cm_sp=Homepage_Top_Right-_-Windows7/PreSale-_-http%3a%2f%2fpromotions.newegg.com%2fMicrosoft%2fW indows7%2fPreSale%2f362x130.jpg) for less than 50% of the retail price. Home Premium is $50, Professional is $100. If you have multiple machines, I would HIGHLY recommend you take this deal. I pre-ordered two copies and noticed on the receipt that I bought $250 in software for $100. :ohsnap:
Y'all have until July 11.

You can use the upgrade disc, but it'll be a clean install.

I'm going to piss everyone off and say I'll stick with OSX, where it's only 30$ to upgrade a single computer and 50 for a family, and only 115$ for the full OS for a new computer.

That said, this is a good deal that I will NOT be taking advantage of. I'm still holding onto the frail remnants of Windows XP

Sticking with RC1 until it expires. By then, kinks will already be worked out and it should be slightly cheaper for Enterprise or Ultimate.

Fully price it will cost me £149 ($238) for both Home Premuim and Professional, bs.
Just thought I'd let you know about MS sites offer.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx
Gives list of who is participating, so theres more than just newegg.com.
Which version are you guys getting (if your getting it)? Home Premium will do the job?

Home Premium is really all that you need, unless you run your own company and totally require the features in Professional. Ultimate is excessive/e-peen software.

UK cant pre-order yet, 15th July. Least it gives me time to mull it over a bit more. I will probably pre-order as its so cheap. Considering its saving me £100 ($160). Thats like 2/3 off.

I'm going to wait till I have a new computer till I get W7. Not all of the hardware on my current PC works well with W7 (I'm looking at you DVD+RW drive).

I'm good with my Vista OS, way to use to it and don't feel like changing.
I'll get this when I ever have to get a new PC or something happens to my hardrive and I lose everything. :v:

Yeah, like others, I'm gonna stick with the RC1 until it runs out, and then see what I can get then. I still have about a year with this then, so I'm good.

Heh.
I think I'll just leave you guys alone while I go pay $0 for all of my upgrades, and $0 for my new installations of my OS of choice.

Yeah Linux is a great alternative that I wish was simply more compatible.
Yes that is Microsoft's fault but... yeah. (Not that it doesn't make sense to make a successful data silo... but... yeah... still sucks)

How many computers can you install this on and do you need a previous version of windows on that machine to get it to run?
Phopojijo
July 9th, 2009, 05:22 PM
1 and you need a previous Windows disk. Doesn't have to be installed though.

So how great is Windows 7? Vista seemed to overcomplicate things and tried to revamp everything with sweet new graphics that just slowed it down. XP still works for me and just seems so simply perfect. Somebody convince me.

Windows 7 has all the flash of Vista with the speed and functionality of XP (and then some), all in a nice 64-bit package that can take advantage of your 4+GB of RAM. Also, DX10/11+ support.
That succinct enough for you?

Me being only slightly technical minded (I can build a decent computer) what difference does 32 or 64 bit make...or what is it for even. -_-

Um, you should know all of my processors are 32-bit. Though that would be the perfect justification for all of my friends to move to Linux...

Preordered as well. I'll be doing a dual boot partition just in case.

July 12th, 2009, 04:52 PM
When I do get around to getting a new PC, I'm still going to dual-boot it with XP because I have a ton of old games that I regularly play (talking DX5 here), and I know that Vista doesn't support them, and I don't trust that XP virtualisation thing in W7.
